I know simply that the sky will last longer than I.
Albert Camus, Summer in Algiers (via fyp-philosophy)
If you know yourself, you’ll not be harmed by what is said about you.
Arab Proverb (via fyp-philosophy)
Empathy isn’t just something that happens to us—a meteor shower of synapses firing across the brain—it’s also a choice we make: to pay attention, to extend ourselves. It’s made of exertion, that dowdier cousin of impulse. Sometimes we care for another because we know we should, or because it’s asked for, but this doesn’t make our caring hollow. The act of choosing simply means we’ve committed ourselves to a set of behaviors greater than the sum of our individual inclinations: I will listen to his sadness, even when I’m deep in my own. To say “going through the motions”—this isn’t reduction so much as acknowledgment of the effort—the labor, the motions, the dance—of getting inside another person’s state of heart or mind. This confession of effort chafes against the notion that empathy should always arise unbidden, that genuine means the same thing as unwilled, that intentionality is the enemy of love. But I believe in intention and I believe in work. I believe in waking up in the middle of the night and packing our bags and leaving our worst selves for our better ones.
Leslie Jamison, The Empathy Exams (via fyp-psychology)
Don’t hold on to someone who’s leaving, otherwise you won’t meet the one who’s coming.
Carl Jung (via fyp-psychology)
And so here we are again, never thought that you would return. I was hoping that you would be gone forever but I guess that you were never gone. You have remained tucked away just waiting to show your ugly face again. And now you are so strong and ready to end it all. Because you are my friend and you know me well enough, and you have always been here with me through it all. And you will never leave.
I felt it again, a coldness that was consuming me. An emptiness and a longing for nothingness. If there was a cliff... One step over the edge. With solid ground beneath my feet. A risk that I would make, and a selfish act. But in that moment I lacked empathy, and struggled to come to grips with reality. Something was missing. I'm sorry.
There is only rage underneath the seemingly calm exterior. Murderous rage.
It is weird driving at night and a dear happens to cross your path. You slow down and wait for it to cross and then speed back up again wondering;"What if I didn't see the deer?" In another reality this may all be true but in the reality you exist if you didn't hit a deer and you are still here right now, then why does it matter? Then a opossum runs across the road and scares the shit out of you, and all of the fucks go out the window. And you are like "Eh".
Coco Rocha by Zhang Jingna for Harper’s Bazaar Vietnam January 2017
Heartache is good. Accept it joyously. Allow it, don’t repress it. The natural tendency of the mind is to repress anything that is painful. By repressing it you will destroy something that is growing. The heart is meant to be broken. It’s purpose is to melt into tears and and evaporate. When the heart has evaporated exactly in the same place where the heart was, you come to know the deeper heart.
Osho (via fyp-philosophy)

first piece for #2017. i hope all your new years celebrations were full of happiness & love! ✨
This is why you sleep at night.
I’m still not even sure who I was trying to be. Who was I becoming? And am I that person in a parallel reality? Did my mind shift over to the existing adjacent reality? Or are there two existing occurrences in which my mind has split and is just a part of one collective entity that can only be harmonized when all realities have run its course? But now I am a completely different person. When I look back at my photos from before it’s like looking at someone else in a different life, it looks like I just didn’t belong to that reality. What saddens me is that I don’t know what reality I belong to, and I have this sense of restlessness and impatience. Who am I? Why am I here now? And what is my path? But if I stay here all night trying to hypothesize these questions and come up with some theories of my own I would never rest.
All of this rambling can be summed up with some science and psychology. And I believe it is totally weird that we are literally just neurons and cells and connections. We are complicated but not so complicated, we can be dissected for understanding and comprehension. If only our questions could be so easily answered and researched. Imagine the possibilities, dissecting the mysteries of life with a scalpel scrapping away and making incisions to pull apart something so infinite and endless and abstract. Beautiful and meaningless, because why would you want to unravel all of the secrets? When being a veil of incomprehension is so pure and indescribable.
Okay goodnight.
Damn straight.
