Great. So all you have to do to get “consent” is drug someone into silence like these men did. This may be the most disgusting defense I have ever heard.
When athletes are accused of rape - and this is not the first or, unfortunately, the last time - often their teammates and coaches will scramble to defend them. That’s wrong. Athletes receiving preferential treatment is not uncommon and is undeniable at schools across this country, and in the case of Steubenville the safe haven of a team ready to go up to bat to defend two rapists has effectively squashed discussion around the central problem of the case: it doesn’t matter who rapes, or who is raped. It matters that a rape has occurred and that it occurred on camera and on the Internet and with great pride and joy from those allegedly involved. It matters that when these boys were publicly scrutinized for this behavior, which is undeniably tasteless and violent behavior stemming from probably equally tasteless and violent attitudes toward women, their teammates and coaches defended them publicly and privately. It matters because the only way people learn is by being told the truth - and the truth is that Coach Saccoccia and all of the Steubenville Big Red team should have stood in solidarity with what is right, and not who they know.

I think this is an important read, but I also don't think it goes far enough. Because not one of those scenes needed to show the actress's bare breasts to make any particular dramatic point. (The one I could see the strongest argument for is Boys Don't Cry which, not coincidentally, was directed by a feminist.) I think MacFarlane is a misogynistic pig, but I also think this song was uncomfortable in part because it punctured the illusion we all accept, that most female nudity on film is about art. In fact, 99% of it is there for the prurient gaze of people like Seth MacFarlane--and we tell ourselves it's necessary/reasonable/arty/important because that's easier than never seeing any friggin' movies, because they pretty much all feature gratuitous objectification of women's bodies. It's easier than being angry about it, and dealing with the inevitable consequences of that anger--being told to lighten up, get over ourselves, get the sticks out of our asses, get a sense of humor, get laid. So I'm glad Seth MacFarlane made us angry, but I wish we could all get just as angry about the fact that rape scenes routinely contain sexualized images of the female body as we are at him for this song.
Women. Serving as voiceless repositories of forensic material since forever. Sigh.

It's not like SVU wasn't awful before, but this makes me want to blow shit up. Yes, Tyson paid his debt to society and is entitled to earn a living. I just wish he'd do it in some quiet way that doesn't make a fucking mockery of rape victims. Every time I see that someone new has paid him to be highly visible, I am reminded of how many people just don't think rape is a very serious crime. That a show ABOUT CATCHING AND PROSECUTING RAPISTS has now stuntcasted a convicted rapist makes me want to move to a cave.
But first, I have to finish writing this book about rape culture.
To say that the left has a problem with handling sexual violence is not to imply that everyone else doesn't. The default student we are concerned about - the student whose learning we want to ensure is protected - is male. Never mind how “distracting” it is to be pulled from class, humiliated, and made to change outfits - publicly degrading young women is small price to pay to make sure that a boy doesn’t have to suffer through the momentary distraction of glancing at a girl’s legs. When this dentist in Iowa can fire his assistant for turning him on - even though she’s done absolutely nothing wrong - the message again is that it’s men’s ability to work that’s important. And when rape victims are blamed for the crime committed against them, the message is the same: This is something that happened to the perpetrator, who was driven to assault by a skirt, or a date, or the oh-so-sexy invitation of being passed out drunk. Women have infringed on their right to exist without being turned on. (Ta-Nehisi Coates describes this centering of male sexual vulnerability quite well.) Our very presence is a disruption of the male status quo.

Occasionally, outcries against the justice system, like the one going on in Steubenville, gives survivors an indication that the poor quality of justice we receive for the assaults committed against us isn't exactly the justice the rest of society wants for itself. But in the 149 days since the Steubenville survivor was assaulted, statistics indicate that nearly another 85,000 sexual assaults have been committed in the United States. And for these, there are no protests, no Anonymous group turning up videos or digging into the backgrounds of the police and prosecutors, no spotlight on anything but, in all likelihood, the background and personality of the victim.

“Judgments” I took this last year, but in retrospect, I think it’s my strongest piece from high school.
Working on this project really made me examine my own opinions, preconceptions and prejudices about “slutty” women and women who choose to cover all of their skin alike. I used to assume that all women who wore Hijabs were being oppressed, slut-shame, and look down on and judge any woman who didn’t express her sexuality in a way that I found appropriate.
I’d like to think I’m more open now.
