having one of those days

It’s been a while since I’ve been on here - mostly because I only really go on tumblr when I’m bored or sad, and thankfully I haven’t been much of either lately.

But today was one of those days that just got to me; one of those days when little things added up to weigh me down. 

I know it’s not the end of the world. In fact, I should take this as a reminder of how good my life is on other days.

Here’s hoping for a good night’s sleep to end this slump.

Having trouble sleeping and for some reason this came to mind...

I don’t consider myself a poet, but I suppose anyone who puts pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) with the intention of expressing his or her feelings is capable of writing poetry.

It’s been a few years since I wrote this, and it’s crazy to think how much has happened and how far I’ve come since then... If you’re curious, read along.

I've never been much of a gambler.

I guess it's because I don't like investing in things when I don't know if the odds are in my favor, but I favored you, so I took a gamble anyway.

You were a game I'd never played before, novel and intriguing, yet intimidating at the same time. I was scare to deal in at first, but one hand and I was hooked.

It took me a while to learn all the rules. I don't even know if I ever actually knew what I was doing, but you convinced me to play along and trust my instincts.

You convinced me to trust you.

I lost a few hands every now and again, but that didn't stop me from playing. Those lost hands became sunk costs and soon I was too invested to leave. Your game was just too good and a chance at the jackpot was enough to keep me at the table.

Game after game, day after day, I let my guard down and laid my cards out. You would ask me if I wanted to hit or stay and I knew that to hit wasn't enough reason to stay, so I stayed for different reasons.

My chips were stacked and I was all in - maybe even in too deep. I knew your were too, but I wasn't foolish enough to know that other people wanted to play, just naive enough to believe that you would never deal them in.

I never thought you'd cheat on me.

You told me how it happened and I thought you were bluffing. But I could tell your face wasn't a poker face - I had to face it. I had to fold.

I asked you why and you said you just weren't thinking. I couldn't grasp you not thinking because I didn't think this could ever happen, but I guess that's how this ever happened in the first place, right? With two people not thinking, just doing what they felt was right.

I thought I got lucky with you; turns out he got lucky with you instead. I wasn't in your head even though I was always on your side, and I wasn't by your side that night, so luck wasn't by mine.

I thought I had things straight, but you beat me with a flush. You spade my heart with some guy from the club; turns out you weren't suited to wear a diamond.

You always told me what you valued most was loyalty. You could have had royalty. You could have had a king, but now you don't have jack.

We could have built a house of cards. It could have been beautiful, albeit fragile, but you got caught up in the moment and then you breathed a little too hard and now we can't live here anymore.

We could have had a full house, but now all I'm left with are cards that you wrote to me, each one telling me how much I meant to you, each one meaning so much to me because I knew this was more than just a game.

But they're just cards now.

Things to count as I shuffle through them, remembering what they used to mean. Things to pick up from the floor after having them thrown up in the air, like my arms admitting defeat.

I don't ever regret playing with you, even though you played me. I learned a lot and now I'm a better player, though still not a player at all, and at least I'm a little more familiar with the deck now.

Now I know that love is a gamble and sometimes you just have to deal.
