This is the alt blog of orion-is-original

This is not really an in-character blog but I do kin Dorian Gray. I will occasionally post in character as him which will be clearly labeled as in character and I might say things that I don't necessarily mean as that character. If you ever want me not to interact as Dorian or change how I do, let me know and I will. You can call me Orion or Dorian, either is perfect for me.

I'm 18, use he/him pronouns and am comfortable with public interactions and asks but NOT dms from people who i don't know irl. Interactions from minors are fine but please be safe. And no NSFT interactions from anyone. (Playful flirting and mildly suggestive art is fine from people my age [ie: 16-20] but no: pictures, dms, sexual remarks or sexual art.)

I'm just here making and collecting aesthetic posts of Oscar Wilde, Dorian Gray, vampires and victorian aesthetics in general. If I mislabel something or forget to credit please remind me, nicely.

Art in general! I am a huge fan of art nouveau especially Aubrey Beardsley (who did a lot of art for Wilde) and Alphonse Mucha. Personally, I do a lot more realism tho.

Just found out the PragerU did a video on Picture of Dorian Gray. I haven't watched it and am not planning to. Here is the analysis of it that I am watching.

Finished the video and I think it was well done. A couple things I would like the add that Anthony didn't mention:

The PragerU guys keep comparing Wilde to Lord Henry when he literally has a quote that states:

"Basil Hallward is what I think I am. Lord Henry what the world thinks me: Dorian what I would like to be- in other age, perhaps."

And they talk about the book's relationship with religion. Specifically how Basil tries to get Dorian to repent but fails (they don't even mention that he is immediately murdered after this.) And how Dorian tries to repent at the end. They criticize this as a hedonistic move and call attention to what they consider to be hypocrisy in confessing and repenting only at one's own deathbed in order to get to heaven.

Apparently they did not look into Wilde's own relationship with religion because that is quite literally what he did.

"I intend to die a Catholic, though I could never live as one."

Robbie Ross got a catholic priest to do Wilde's last rites on his deathbed. He converted a matter of hours before he died.

Obviously it probably goes without saying how disrespectful the PragerU hosts are to Oscar Wilde's history, memory and work.

Just started the Takarazuka Rose of Versailles- Lady Oscar is so incredibly transfem im surprised no one really talks about it

Just started the movie Rose of Versailles (the 2025 manga adaptation) this is so gay

Okay coming back to Rose of Versailles after watching the Takarazuka musical, the 2025 anime movie and the 1979 live action movie Lady Oscar, all of which are adaptations of the same Manga, I have many thougts.

Mostly gonna rant about Oscar’s gender

Spoilers ahead

I’m gonna use they/them pronouns for Oscar, you’ll see why.

So Oscar is born in France in 1755. Assigned female at birth, their father is disappointed so decides to raise Oscar as a son. In Lady Oscar (1979), Oscar’s father only ever genders them as male before doing a complete 180 later on.

Depending on the adaptation Oscar genders themself differently. In the musical I don’t think Oscar genders themself at all, in the 1979 movie I think they describe themself as a woman? And in the 2025 movie they describe themself as a woman a few time but also refer to their relationship with Andre being like the twins in Gemini. They say to Andre to ‘make me your wife’ but also when going to their father and saying they choose their own fate they say they will ‘live as a child of Mars’.

The people around Oscar assume they are a man based on the way they dress and act. Fersen assumes Andre to be a man until corrected by their nanny after knowing them for several days. Oscar wears a dress to meet Fersen at a party and confess their love for him and he doesn’t recognize them.

At the point where Oscar’s father completely switches tactics, he tries to marry them off. The characterization of the fiancé is also different between versions. In the 2025 movie he is nice when we first see him, then pretty sexist towards Oscar when proposing, then he rescinds his proposal when Oscar confessing they love Andre. In the 1979 movie he makes me puke in my mouth. He requests Oscar to wear a dress at their engagement announcement but omg Oscar shows up in this:

Then proceeds to dance with a woman and kiss her!!!

What were we talking about?

Gender! Right. So Oscar doesn’t like being feminized. The one time they do wear a dress they do not seem uncomfortable with the dress itself just Fersen’s rejection. But when they choose, all their clothes are masculine.

Early on in the 1979 film, Marie Antoinette tells Oscar that women at court are taking after them and dressing masculinely. A few scenes later Fersen comments about women dressing like men (can’t remember the exact quote but it’s fairly innocuous) and Oscar leaves, offended.

In my original post I gender Oscar as simply transfem but that is not accurate at all. Oscar’s gender is very layered and very restricted by the gender roles of their time. As a trans person it definitely brought me comfort to think of Oscar as being transfem so it would feel like everyone was gendering them correctly. However, Oscar’s gender is so complex that it cannot be explained. Oscar was assigned female at birth and raised as a son but their perceived womanhood is no secret, seemingly everyone knows. And Oscar does exhibit ‘feminine’ traits like idfk having emotions? But is very content with who they are it would seem. They never verbalize any regret about not being raised as a woman. In the 2025 movie they tell their father that they’re grateful they were never held back by their sex.

I can’t really come to a completely satisfying conclusion but I can say: I’m so happy this franchise exists. Queer history is a rare thing to see and it’s awesome. Sorry if this is really weirdly written. My eyes and brain don’t work because it’s late.

he is so sad yet he makes me so happy

unpopular opinion but I think that the fact that Dorian murdered Basil really added to his story and explains both their characters. I would never take it out of the book.

Are you a fan of vampire stories? I’d like to suggest AMC’s series “Interview with the Vampire” (2 seasons available). And a follow-up series will be released on June 7 - “The Vampire Lestat”. (Even if you’re not a vampire fan, the series has a great cast and is cleverly written - worth checking out.)

Both series are based on books by Anne Rice. She wrote Interview while living in San Francisco in the 1970s. Her 5-year-old daughter died (leukemia?) which helps explain why “Interview” includes the character Claudia - a 5-year-old girl vampire.

Rice then moved to New Orleans where she wrote “The Vampire Lestat”. He was the villain of the first book - but Rice fell in love with him - and she turned him into a misunderstood hero.

That’s when I first started reading her books. In all, she eventually wrote a couple dozen. BUT I only like the first 5.

Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt starred in the 1994 movie of Interview. Cruise was totally miscast as Lestat but otherwise the movie was okay. Pitt looked beautiful and the movie introduced Kristen Dunst who played Claudia vampire child (aged up to 12).

There was a 2002 follow-up movie called “Queen of the Damned” (based on Rice’s 3rd vampire book). Stuart Townsend played Lestat. He was better than Cruise but the movie itself was so-so.

AMC started a series in 2022 of “Interview” - with two seasons to cover the book. They made substantial charges to plot and characters - the biggest change was making 2 of the main vampires African America in the 1920s. This altered the subtext considerably - to the better. Another change was that in the books, the vampires don’t have sex with each other. BUT in the series, the vampires are very gay.

While all of the cast is good - Sam Reid as Lestat is perfect - a passionate brat and sometimes monster. I’m looking forward to season 3 and will resubscribe to AMC when it starts.

(BTW - in the book, Lestat is tired of the other vampires hiding in the shadows - so he decides to become a rock star with songs that reveal all the vampire secrets. He does this to force the other vampires to show themselves.)

If you’re not interested in subscribing to AMC, I think season 1 of Interview is available on Netflix, maybe season 2 too?

Four in a Series - Jeremy Brett

Jeremy Brett’s appeared in a supporting role in a 1976 production of “The Picture of Dorian Gray” that’s still available online. But he starred as Dorian in his own production in 1961, as part ITV’s Armchair Theater (an anthology series of single plays).

Unfortunately I have not been able to find any videos of the production... not even clips. (Some episodes of the series are for sale on Amazon in Region 2 DVDs but they doesn’t appear to include Dorian.)

Instead, I’m sharing a few photos that give us a hint of the production.

While going through this book, I came across a The Artist's Preface that proceeds the regular preface to The Picture of Dorian Gray. None of my other versions contain this part of the text and I am...confused about how I've never seen this before.
