I love to talk a lot and I have a lot to say about this game and how it connects to me in a way nothing did. but I’ll try to be very sintetic for the sake of the people that will read this (probably no one). Owlboy is a fantastic indie game that makes its mark in the history of games thanks to two things. First its visual. Its backgorunds offers probably the best of pixel art that you will see. The character sprites are beautiful and have amazing animations. Theres not much more I could say about that, you can see it in every review of the game, its perfect. The second point are its characters. They are fantastic, well written and ridiculous relatable. The main character, Otus, is probably one of my favorite game characters ever now. I see my child self in him a lot. And that makes me feel a lot of diferent emotions through the game. I really love him. This is what makes the game so great, but everything else is fantastic too. The soundtrack is perfect and the level design is good. There are flaws in it tough. Specially during a second playtrough. There are some moments that are kinda a chore. Unfortunatly the pacing is far from eprfect. But is good. What really holds the story are the dialogs but the storytelling has its flaws too. One of the things that make the story so unique is also what almost ruins it. The way the story progress never giving the player a reward for their deeds, and side stories and quests leading always to sad moments is perfect to put you in Otus shoes and feel him. But is also to much used. In one moment there was this very sad side story that i lought because I was already expecting something terrible and it was. The super open ending also doesn’t helps. Owlboy in a way feels like a collection of little moments insteed of a big happening. And in the end there is nothing to wrap them up very well. The end feels more lacking them interesting. It dosen’t added to make it better. Its just “ok”. Like, all that you see in the game is a built up to something that never comes. Is very underwhelming to see all those amazing characters being built to end in such a vague way. Obviously, even with 10 years of development is still , in a way, D-Pad Studio first game. So would be ridiculous to expect everything to be perfect. Still what they achieved is fantastic. Otus and his colorful but harsh world will be forever with me even with those flaws.
