Probably too late, but publishing a blog post tomorrow on the last day of the internship! I had such an awesome time here and wanted to share ways to get the most out of the internship.

Another shot of my banana cream pie (if anyone missed Anna's perfect picture). While everyone was grabbing a piece, I also talked to Janice and Jeremy a bit about the pie-making process and dropped a tip: when following the recipe, make sure to add a little more butter to the crust to make sure it sticks together and doesn't end up being just little pieces of graham cracker (does that count as teaching someone outside my lab something new?). For anyone interested, the recipe is here.
Taught Laura (UX, not in my lab) something non-lab-related: how to make perfect mashed potatoes!
The magic: 5lb of potatoes, 4-8oz of cream cheese along with butter, 1tbsp Lawry’s salt and onion powder, plus a pinch of black pepper. Whip it all together with beaters and bake. Bakes like a soufflé. :)
I vegan-ize them quite often too: “Better than Cream Cheese” and margarine.
TTT Name: Gondola skipper
We were stuck for ~10 minutes going up on the scenic gondola ride, so Eli and I decided to jog down the mountain instead of taking it back down. Real winter adventure.
EDIT: In my defense Durham, I was thinking Gondola Lift
I baked again to satisfy Andy's word-mongering (and cravings for sweets)
The note says "contains: milk, wheat, soy, and deliciousness
You guys, today is Thursday and this is happening. I'll be keeping these interns captive. #viget #vigetinterns14 #turtlebrownies by annalewis7 http://ift.tt/1uqU012
Every morning this week, a new treat appears and quickly disappears. Thanks @janicepangcake! #vigetinterns14 #viget by annalewis7 http://ift.tt/1AUKYxX
Scram double whammy!
1. I baked for this week – chocolate covered granola bites, AND
2. I taught Sam a non-lab related skill in the process!
HQ– they will be ready at lunch time.
Didn't snap a photo in the actual meeting yesterday, but Saad and I had a client meeting in DC at one of my favorite places
Remote meeting with Kelly and Danielle this morning!
TIL Brian, Andy, and Emily played a game as kids—competing to see who could climb and tie a flag the highest on a tree. According to Emily, Andy took matters into his own hands (and "ruined the game forever") by tying the flag high up the tree and then breaking all the branches on his way down.
Fantastic story: thanks Emily!
TIL: Andy never had a cup of coffee until he had children and he used to live in Houston.
TTT for HQ yesterday! Look at all those expert climbers an stand-arounders.
Hi all!
As I've been completing this BizDev internship, Saad and I have talked extensively about sending good emails and connecting with people. Although none of you are in sales, you all probably have one or two people you follow and would eventually like to meet/talk to. As a result, I just wanted to share a couple of the things I've learned about sending better emails to people you want to interview:
Make it short. No one likes a long email, and that extends to people even busier than you. If it's over 1 or 2 short paragraphs, figure out a way to be more succinct.
Make it about them. After all, this is a person that *you* want to talk to, so make sure your email demonstrates what you know about them and why you want their time.
Make a connection. If you have a person in common, ask them for an introduction or mention them in your email. If you have the same hobby as your desired contact, mention that. Connect with them on something other than "hey, I like you, please talk to me."
Make it clear. With an email like this, you are definitely making an "ask." You can do this one of two ways: slyly and covertly, or openly and honestly. Always go with the latter. It shows that you respect their time and intelligence, and it lets them know exactly what you want. If all you need is a short phone conversation, ask for that - don't let them think you need an hour of their time when 15 minutes on the phone will do.
Saad is a Master of the Ask, and I would recommend talking to him if this is something you struggle with.
Hope these are helpful, and perhaps they motivate you to reach out to someone who you've admired for awhile but always from a distance!
V is for Viget! Or perhaps victory on conquering a morning walk to work.
