[Ashen commits a little heresy against the Catholic Church sometimes. For example he believes infants were born blameless and should not have to be absolved from sin.]

as  an  entertainer  ,  his  work  does  not  end  even  when  his  lute  rests.  he  is  to  mingle  ,  to  amuse  and  to  dazzle.  to  distract  die  herrschaften  from  their  woes  and  sorrows  and  burdens.  with  a  quick  tongue  ,  her  wordplay  easily  interjects—  steering  conversations  away  from  business  and  to  idle  tomfoolery.  resting  her  prized  lute  against  the  stool  she  had  been  offered  ,  trusting  that  amongst  these  fine  people  her  possessions  will  be  safe  ,  tolouse  practically  runs  into  the  priests  arms.

rounded  brows  lift  ,  though  verdant  greens  spark  in  mischievous  amusement  at  such  a  question.  perhaps  he  would  have  asked  any  other  person  if  they  were  serious—  alas  this  fellow  appears  quite  honest  in  his  inquiry.  a  surprising  question  ,  as  they  have  learned  such  pestering  to  be  reserved  for  travelling  folk.  poised  with  easy  elegance  ,  her  hands  find  the  dip  of  her  waist  to  rest  upon  ,  head  cocked  slightly  aside.

❛  why  ,  thank  you  good  sir.  or  should  i  say  father?  and  i  do  rather  wager  that  depends  ...  if  my  fortune  decides  to  smile  upon  me  tonight  ,  i  can  tell  you  in  confidence  that  a  handsome  man  of  god  is  all  too  eager  to  answer  all  my  questions.  so  ,  what  say  you?  ❜  she  grins  ,  revealing  gapped  teeth  in  a  dazzling  smile.  musician's  fingers  slip  'neath  the  rim  of  her  fool's  hood  ,  pushing  it  off  her  head  to  free  tousled  ,  red  coils.  ❛  i  have  the  impression  you  are  more  of  a  novelty  here  than  i  am.  ❜

Ashen knew the look of confidence, but a much different one. More than confidence, it was the arrogance of his fellow noblemen, shaped from the youngest age by an education that placed them as the chosen of God, those whose circumstances of birth gave them the right to rule over others. But Tolouse's confidence was different.

It seemed natural, but perhaps it was learned; she looked elegant, graceful, and maybe, even, seductive. Yet the priest could not quite place the jester's identity, his gender, the appearance of their clothing; caught off-guard, the flirt made Ashen shake his head with an embarrassed smile. It was part of the act, of course, but it had still been long enough since anybody had said something like this to him.

"Either will do, as long as you feel comfortable with it." He had a slight preference for Father, of course, after so many years of theology; but he always considered that his interlocutor feeling at ease mattered more.

And how curious, too, how different Tolouse looked with their hood down. Beautiful curls, rather uncommon; he would have made the happiness of many a suitor were she to be unmarried. Was she a lady...? Highcliff let go of the thought for now, admitting that he would find no suitable answer.

"I would have to disagree; I find you to be the novelty," he responded with a discreet chuckle. "But very well. I shall answer your questions, if that is your desire."

to his relief, the man before him has a friendly demeanor. he greets his guest warmly, a welcoming smile on his face. it eases siegfried's worry. the other also doesn't reprimand him for carrying his weapon here, which dispels some tension from his shoulders. yet at the same time it seems as if there is something else on the man's face besides the tranquil cheerfulness. a trace of worry lingers in his eyes. from what, siegfried can not tell, but perhaps he might reprimand him after all. he continues to stare at the clergyman, like a curious but apprehensive fox, trying to find an explanation for his somber eyes.

❛ oh no, i'm not— ❜ he starts but trails off. a place such as this one is still strange to him, even if not entirely unusual. still he had come because there is a certain peacefulness here, if no one is around. it can be a place to find some quiet, be alone with one's own thoughts. perhaps that was his prayer in a way. at least an attempt at finding answers. but no all - knowing disembodied voice from the heavens above has answered him yet.

❛ i was only . . . ❜ he fidgets, not knowing what to do with his hands. a sigh of frustration is expelled when his sentence is left unfinished yet again. he must appear like a lost soul, or a confused vagabond. and so despite himself, siegfried throws a dark look at the other, as if to warn him not to make fun of his lack of eloquence. even when the man has done nothing of the sort.

he looks down to the other's habit then, furrowing his brow as if he remembers something. ❛ are you the man they say was once a knight ? ❜

Like a frightened animal, Siegfried seemed to recoil, thrown into unfamiliar grounds. Ashen recalled seeing that gaze whenever the mood struck him to inspect his new recruits. The prospect of their lord and marshal's presence terrified them, and yet they strove to appear prim and proper under the sergeant's watch, trembling and stumbling and stuttering, knuckles turning white or palms sweating within their encasing gloves.

And he looked the part of a young man-at-arms, too. Shouldn't he be handled gently? Underneath virile beard and muscle, there was a sensitive soul tuned to the strings of the Lord's creation. Warrior as Siegfried may have been, he needed rest, and perhaps an understanding listening ear. Father Highcliff waited, letting him find the words that threatened to leap off the tip of his tongue. Perhaps he had not expected, however, that the conversation would turn to him instead.

"Ah, so you have heard the villagers' tales." Dispassionate. This was not the first time. "I was indeed, and to some extent, I still am bound to answer the King's call should he require it. But war either takes everything or nothing at all, and it's stripped me to the bone." More than that. It broke his ribcage open and tore his heart out with bloody teeth. "So I have taken to a more peaceful career, until duty calls me again. Sometimes, one must choose between being a hero, or being alive."

I meant historical Ashen but either way really. I just want him. In armor. I will report to the training area at the appointed time.
