i see people saying the show needs to address what macaque did to the group but from what ive seen i dont trust the fandom to be able to write that interaction well

It is literally impossible to please everyone. No matter what you write, no matter how "perfect" it is, there will always be people who have criticism. It may be kindly put, but there will always be people who wish you did your art/told your story differently. Constructive criticism should be constrained to objective issues or continuity, rather than preference, but alas, most people do not adhere to this. At the end of the day though, knowing that you cannot please everyone, make sure that in your creations, you please yourself first and foremost. You are, after all, the person who will read your story the most or view your art the longest. Create for yourself. Above all, write/draw/paint/sculpt/etc for yourself. Then share /that/ with others. But make it for you.

Okay but like, I keep seeing people talk about, "Macaque was a cannibal! MACAQUE WAS A CANNIBAL!!"

As if he was steaming monkeys for hors d'oeuvres with wine.

(lol Red Boy reference because of course I did)

And I'm not really trying to get involved in the pro/anti Macaque discourse (cuz there's cringe takes on both sides of it when it comes to lmk), but I feel like I gotta set the record straight about this one.

There was exactly *one* instance of cannibalism, and it was not Mac's fault that the monkey died. He was *responsible* in the way any leader is responsible for the people under him, but he did not kill the monkey, and he did not ask anyone to do so either. It wasn't his idea or intent in any way. Sha Wujing (ye olde Sandy) killed that monkey.

Yes, the monkey was eaten. And yes, that's kinda gross. But there is no inherent immorality to things just because they are gross.

If you want to complain about JTTW Mac, talk about him impersonating Sun Wukong, beating up Tripitaka, and stealing his clothes. Talk about his little plot to go get the scriptures by faking his way through with monkeys on transformation magic. Talk about his stupid battle with Wukong.

And if you wanna feel bad for him, talk about the fact that JTTW Wukong straight up murdered him after he was captured by the Buddha.

But don't try to directly port book events to show events. Mac of LMK is very different from Mac of JTTW in knowledge, overall power level, background, and intention. It's *great* to reference the book. But don't skip out on the subtlety and nuance of the relationship he has with Wukong in LMK.

There is *plenty* of drama to be had already, and it hits way fucking harder when it's not oversimplified babyfood.

I do agree here that JTTW shouldn't be treated as gospel when it comes to LMK

LMK is not a retelling, it's an adaptation based on the original book, so naturally, not every single thing will be featured; including the fact that some people have zeroed-in on the fact that Six Eared Macaque (aka book-Macaque) ordered the monkey to be cooked and eaten, and then made it as if that's his entire thing: feasting on monkeys and being a heinous and immoral villain- like they took one aspect of him and act like that's his entire character

which is why it baffles me when I happen to see the leaps and bounds that some people take to seemingly justify their hatred of Macaque in LMK; like people are allowed to dislike a character, it's perfectly fine to not like a character, regardless of whether they are a protagonist, antagonist or villain- but to go so far as to dig into the original source material and cherry-pick the worst things about a character, so then someone can claim that's why the adapted version of the character "deserves" to be hated, is just beyond my understanding

all in all, I do agree that JTTW shouldn't be so heavily conflated with LMK, because the latter is clearly not a word-for-word retelling of the original story (and that also includes the fact that LMK Macaque is not the same person as Six Eared Macaque in JTTW, and thus despite the insistence of a loud minority, he is very much not a cannibal in LMK)

Quiet Time

There is a specific reason behind this composition.

While the vertical format is great for smartphone screens, I also wanted to use negative space to create a distinct mood.

I believe that negative space can express a character's inner emotions. In this piece, the character is small, and the background takes up about 80% of the canvas. By drawing the character so small, I can evoke a sense of loneliness and solitude.

Another key point is the placement of the cloud shadows. I intentionally kept Caine out of the shadow. You can see the boundary between the light and the cloud shadow. I used this high contrast to make the character stand out and emphasize their presence.

Finally, let us look at Caine's angle. I purposely hid Caine's face and positioned them to show their back. If their expression were visible, this artwork would probably feel cute rather than lonely. I enjoy drawing figures from angles where you cannot see their faces. This approach leaves room for viewers to wonder what the character is thinking.

Posts like this make me feel so much better. It always seems like society treat responses to others pain as though empathy is the most important kind. I am around 85% compassionate and this post helped me not feel like I am a monster because of that for once.
