I was thinking about this:
[ID: gif from BBC Sherlock. In their flat at 221b, Sherlock is telling John: "No, I prefer my doctors clean-shaven"). END ID]
During the Victorian Era, having facial hair was a symbol of masculinity. As we well know, in ACD canon (so as in TAB) John had moustaches, while Sherlock didn't have any type of facial hair.
In the series, John grew the moustaches after having met Mary; he didn't wear them in MHR, that is set when he already had met Mary (in his blog he only says "someone" and it's probably her since he's going to propose one month later). He wore moustaches when he told Mrs. Hudson that he had moved on and when he proposed to Mary in TEH (so when their relationship is going to become official and lasting) but, after Sherlock's return and his comments about the moustaches, John decided to shave it.
So, if facial hair stands for masculinity (which in the Victorian Era also meant being straight and living according to certain standards, among which the aesthetic ones) when Sherlock says that he prefers John without moustaches, it means that he prefers John when he doesn't conform to heteronormativity and people's expectations. On the other hand, John wanting to shave when Sherlock returns in his life means that he wants to be his true self now that Sherlock is with him, even if it's very difficult for him, as we well know (here are some thoughts and metas about John's past and traumas and how they led him to repress his bisexuality -> x, x, x - in addition, there's also this interesting meta about Mary being the personification of heteronormativity)
The same concept applies to Sherlock's choice of not wearing the hat; as this meta says, the moustaches and the hat are what the public expects from them but, as I explained before, I think that not only Sherlock's hat but also John's moustaches are a symbol of a public fake image in which they're straight, because that is, in John's opinion, what people except from them.
To summarize:
Facial hair = symbol of masculinity during the Victorian Age
John grew the moustaches when he decided to move on from Sherlock and to propose to Mary
Sherlock prefers John clean-shaven (which means that he prefers when John doesn't force himself to conform to heteronormativity)
John shaved for Sherlock
Sherlock's hat and John's moustaches are what people expect from them and they represent heterosexuality.
Lessons from Mrs Heteronormativity
Hi, Iām āMaryā. Or actually Iām A.G.R.A. Or ā come to think of it ā Iām rather āRosamundā. Or why not āGabrielleā?
Or whatever. Whoever. The thing is, who I really am doesnāt matter; I could be anyone at all. ANYONE.
Iāll be who itās convenient to be at any given moment. My mission: Serial Killer; Iām here to kill the series ā slowly but surely.
Iām Mrs Heteronormativity; the one who tells you how to behave according to convention and normality. You do as I say ā or else⦠Iām the one entitled to guide you through life, to make sure you remain perfectly ordinary. And here are some lessons about me I want to teach you:
1. You must always marry me; everyone knows itās for the best.
2. Donāt even think about same-sex relationships!
3. Iām here to prevent any sidestepping.
4. Marrying an assassin is perfectly sane and normal.Ā
In fact anything is OK as long as it means No Homo. Oh, are you hurt? Sorry, but collateral damage is inevitable.
5. Thereās no use trying to express your pathetic feelings if I tell you they are inappropriate.
6. Just so you know: Iām everything you wish for.
7. I make sure your babyās name is appropriate to gender.
Which means:
Nope.Ā
Exactly. Good boy!
8. With me youāll be sure to have the right family values.
9. Iāll always be there to tell you what to do ā even if you think Iām dead. And itās No Homo!
10. And ultimately, Iām the one who gets to define who you really are.
I do hope youāve been paying attention to me now, and never more try to step out of the ordinaryā¦
[This is, very much, how I see āMaryā. Sheās not a real character ā sheās a nightmare! Thatās why she lacks any constancy regarding feelings or back-story or name or anything. And thatās why she keeps haunting the show even after her death, like a ghost. āDo not forget meā ā weāre not getting a chance to ever forget the Abominable Bride, not even for a moment. Sheās merely a metaphor. And series 3 and 4 are mainly about consequences ā the results you get when you listen to this sort of concept and let it define your life.]

donāt know about yāall but i think about this moment a lot. the look on her face when she first sees eve..but then she turns her head and when she faces her again the emotion is gone like it was never there in the first place,,,she replaces her satisfaction with mockery. i just think about this a lot
More old people enjoying themselves!!! Ā š±
Oh the horror. Everyone knows that after 30, all fun is excised from your life by the Adult Transmogrification, but these people somehow Ā escaped! Feel free to be inspired š
Also, to all young ageist little shits on Tumblr: fuck youĀ š
Okay but after seeing this I started doing it too and itās amazing how many men Iāve run into bc they expected me to move
Gotta try it
I work (and walk) on a college campus. Iāve lost count of how many men Iāve smacked shoulders with.
Recently, I was standing outside my sonās classroom waiting to talk to his teacher. I stood on one side of the hallway, not even close to the center. At some point, a man came walking along. I was standing right in his path, but the hallway was empty, so I logically expected him to swerve around me. Instead he kept walking right toward me, got to me, and stopped, as if waiting for me to get out of his way. I didnāt; I just smiled politely at him. He finally walked around me, clearly annoyed that I hadnāt leapt out of his manly path.
Now Iām wishing Iād leapt aside, taken off my jacket and laid it on the floor before him, then bowed deeply and said, āMy Liege!ā
I also work at a college campus. I smack shoulders sometimes, but I find that if I stare straight ahead and follow the advice below, people get the heck out of the way.
Honestly this post changed how I carry myself when walking alone in public, or in a situation where Iām the one leading. People definitely move for the murder gaze.
Confirmed. I once had to rush back inside a convention hall as the con was closing in order to a retrieve a sick friendās medication, and I didnāt understand why people in the crowd were jumping out of my way (literallyāone guy vaulted a table) until I realized I was dressed as the Winter Soldier and doing the Murder Walk because thatās just how I walk in those boots. I got the meds, got out, and made a mental note.
I repeated the experiment later, wearing the boots but otherwise my usual clothing and mimicking the expression I thought Iād had at that moment. People parted like I was Charlton Heston.
I now wear that style of boots whenever possible. I recently had a man do a double-take as I walked by and ask me, politely, where I had served because I ālooked like a soldier.ā Iām not current or former military. I was wearing a flowy purple peasant top and looked as un-soldierlike as possible.
Moral of the story: wear comfortable shoes, square your shoulders, and walk like youāve been sent to murder Captain America.
WALK LIKE YOUāVE BEEN SENT TO MURDER CAPTAIN AMERICA
Itās called the Murder Strut.
ITāS BACK!!!!!! I was searching for this to show my daughter the other day and couldnāt find it. Iām so glad ITāS BACK!! I will always reblog the Murder Strut!!
A guy on a bike went around me because he could tell I had no intention of moving. Thanks to this post.
One day and I bumped into a guy while doing the Murder Strut and he apologized to me even though I was the one who had bumped into him.
It works wonders.
In case you were wondering, yes you can do this in a wheelchair. Same look in your eyes and let āem know you will run them down. Just picture yourself in a sports car accelerating towards someone with the intention of flattening them.
If thereās anything more satisfying than watching Abled men leap out of my way when they realize Iām not moving for them, I canāt think of it atm.
Walk like youāve been sent to murder Captain America.
Wheel like youāre gonna win the Indy 500 and donāt care how.
Your crutches are short swords; walk like you can see them buried in the bodies of anyone who crosses (in front of) you.

One of my favorite posts is back!
Powerful statements like these, that juxtapose the condemnation of such a simple and pure thing as love with the honour and worship of violence and death, always hit me hard and stay with me for days
This is the tombstone of Technical Sergeant Leonard Philip Matlovich, the first gay service member to intentionally out himself in order to fight the ban on gay people in the military. He hadnāt only served for Vietnam, he was a career Air Force member in good standing who would have liked to continue his career even though he knew coming out would most likely make that impossible. Heād also been an elder in the LDS church but was excommunicated
He was on the cover of Time magazine in 1975 which was the first time an openly gay person appeared on the cover of a U.S. magazine and had their name printed in that magazine
He was an advocate for AIDs/HIV patients from the start of the outbreak in the 70s. He contracted the virus in 1986 and died 2 years later
His name doesnāt appear on his tombstone because he wanted it to be a memorial for all gay veterans
hereās the King himself
and hereās his grave in its full glory, with the pink triangles and everything! the words over the dates of his birth and death are referencing the extermination of lgbt people during the holocaust and the HIV crisis, respectively.
