At first, George wasnโt sure whether what he was hearing was real or not. The first time he had heard the magnificent noise, he had just got out of the hospital wing after a pretty rough bludger hit and was walking down a deserted corridor just after curfew so he had shaken it off as a delusional side effect of the healing medicine he had been given for his broken ribs.
However, the second time he had heard it, he was in full health. It was after hours again and he had just snuck down to the kitchens to get some food for his starving stomach, he was walking past an empty classroom on the second floor when he heard it again. It was someone singing and whoever it was sounded like an angel. He stopped dead in his tracks and all thought of being caught by Filch left his mind as he neared closer to the room. He wanted desperately to find the angel within the room and listen to her heavenly voice for hours but it stopped just as he reached the door. George didnโt want to look like a creep just standing there so he ran back to his common room before neither the mysterious angel or Filch could catch him.
He tried to go back at the same time to the same room just for the chance to hear her but he knew the more he snuck out, the more likely he was to be caught so he instead had to reimagine her voice as he laid in bed. He knew it was probably creepy but this mysterious girl had a talent unlike George had ever heard before even in professional singers. He started to imagine who the owner of the mysterious voice could be but he couldnโt piece it together.
George didnโt realise how much he talked about the girl until Fred smacked him round the side of the head with an amused smirk. โGeorgie, stop pining and go and find her!โ But it wasnโt that easy, it never was. He would just have to settle for the idea that he had conjured up this perfect girl because every time he tried to find her, to follow her voice to that room he either lost his courage to go in or just simply couldnโt hear it anymore.
Fred had told him to find her or just give up, anyway to stop hearing his moping. Luckily for the both of them, neither had to wait long for George to find his missing piece of the puzzle. He just didnโt expect to find it in his potions class first thing on a Monday.ย
Everything was normal and boring as usual. Fred had sent George to go and get ingredients from the store cupboard whilst he messed around with the colourful liquid. There was only one other person in the small space and George smiled as it turned out to be Y/n. She was a very pretty girl but also very shy. George found it kind of adorable that whenever he spoke to her she would blush and awkwardly speak back. They never had long conversations with each other but George considered Y/n to be somewhat of a friend. She had helped him and Fred on multiple occasions by quickly turning her notes around so they could see them or giving them hints in certain subjects. The smile she wore every time George thanked her was also very adorable.
Y/n was quietly humming to herself as she scanned the shelves and George thought that the tune sounded oddly familiar but he shook the thought off quickly as Y/n struggled to reach what she needed. George quickly reached up effortlessly and grabbed the jar for her. She blushed having not noticed he was there and smiled thankfully as he handed her the ingredient. He smiled back before grabbing his own ingredient and going back to his table with one last smile to her. He had barely left the cupboard when Y/n sang a small note of the song she had been humming and it clicked. George quickly swung around, his jaw slack as Y/n absentmindedly sang a few more words of the unfamiliar song that George had quickly come to love.
Although the voice was quieter than he had usually heard it, there was no mistaking its angelic quality. He felt himself slip into a slight daze, forgetting he was staring in the middle of a class until Snape interrupted him. Y/n turned her head following Snapeโs angry voice and looked thankful it wasnโt aimed at her before realising that the professor had just reprimanded George for staring at her and she started to blush deeper than George had ever seen her do so. He quickly went back to his table where Fred was trying to stifle laughter and failing miserably. But nothing broke Georgeโs smile because heโd found her. A fact he couldnโt wait to tell Y/n as soon as class was over with but unfortunately, Snape didnโt share his enthusiasm. He pulled George back and gave him a few stern words (a truly lucky escape) before letting him go but by that time Y/n was already long gone. ย
It had just reached curfew hour as George sat thinking about Y/n. Fred rolled his eyes as he listened to his brother talk about her again.
โWell, if youโre so sure - what are you doing sat here?โ Fred smirked as George realised he had a point and looked up quickly at the clock before running out of the portrait hole.
He was still careful to avoid Filch, this wasnโt the night to be caught. George sneaked successfully to the second floor and upon hearing a soft voice singing, the voice that made him melt inside, he picked up his pace and only hesitated for a moment before finally entering the classroom. He tiptoed inside, still listening intently to the way her voice hit every note perfectly. Y/n was faced away from the entrance, she seemed to be deeply concentrated on the night sky as she sang. George just stood there because he didnโt want her to stop singing.
As the last perfect note echoed around the room, George couldnโt help but clap with a smile. This of course, made Y/n jump since she was used to being alone as she sang. She turned and looked deeply embarrassed as her eyes met Georgeโs only briefly before turning to the floor. She was like a turtle going back into her shell.
โIโm sorry, I didnโt mean to scare you. Itโs just your voice is- itโs- wow!โ George felt at a loss for words. He had imagined speaking to her for so long that he didnโt know what to do with it being a reality. He watched as Y/n laughed nervously, vigorously shaking her head, her gaze still on the floor. โNo, it is! Itโs the most beautiful thing Iโve ever heard.โ He spoke softly in the quiet atmosphere. Y/nโs eyes finally lifted to meet his across the room, she looked in utter disbelief but there was also a blush on her cheeks evident in the ray of moonlight on her face. George wanted desperately to say that it wasnโt just her voice that was beautiful but he didnโt want to scare her any more than he had by coming on too strong. He had learnt from Fredโs mistakes that that was never a good way to be.
He walked closer to her, the gap between them seemingly too big. Y/nโs breath shook nervously but her eyes were still locked to his and the way her lips turned up into a smile, made George feel more relaxed in himself.
โDo you really think that?โ Y/nโs voice was also quiet and sounded nervous. George nodded with a sure smile to let her know he was genuine. โWell, thanks.โ Her cheeks turned a deeper shade of pink and she awkwardly looked away out of the window again before pulling her gaze back to meet his warm, brown eyes.
โHow come you sing in here?โ George glanced around the room and realised it was an old classroom that looked as if it hadnโt been used in quite some time. Y/n shrugged, looking around herself.
โItโs somewhere far enough away that no one can hear me. Plus Filch never comes down this way and it has a pretty good view.โ She pointed out the window with a smile and George looked confused, surely every room had the same view but he was proven wrong as he looked out to see the starry night sky at the most perfect angle, like it was out of a painting. He nodded with a smile and encouraged Y/n to continue by asking her questions about why she had got into singing among other things.
When they had both finished talking, it was almost light out. They had near enough exhausted most topics of conversation but George could have continued speaking to her for hours. He had learnt about Y/nโs family and her singing being a way of coping. She no longer seemed like the shy girl George had come to know with them both becoming comfortable around each other. But Y/n was still very adorable, regardless.
They both laughed quietly as they snuck out of the door with matching yawns. Luckily, they both had a free period the next morning.
Over the next week or so, George started to purposely โbumpโ into Y/n more often. Y/n met him with a laugh and a smile, she felt more comfortable around him now after that night and was always happy to see him despite her suspicions about how โcoincidentalโ these meetings were. That was until they became so frequent that it became routine to sit with each other at meals and to hang out in common rooms together. Quickly, they had become friends. Friends with oblivious crushes on each other.
Y/n didnโt think much of how close she had become to George until one day when he had turned up at the great hall, muddy and exhausted from a long quidditch practise. He ate quickly before saying he was going to the common room, Y/n didnโt think twice about following him and then waiting on the sofa chatting with Ginny whilst he got cleaned up. George came downstairs, his eyes looking ready to close at any minute. ย He sat down next to her with a sigh and started to tell her about how strict Oliver had been at practise before asking Y/n about her day. He nodded along as she finished before his head slowly flopped onto her shoulder and he drifted into sleep. Y/n only felt a bit awkward before she giggled a little bit as did Ginny who was still sat with them. Y/nโs hand then began to stroke Georgeโs hair and he hummed at the feeling.
โYes?โ She asked with an amused smile as George moved himself to situate his head on her lap. He got into a comfy position and tilted his head up at her with a puppy dog look.
โWill you sing to me?โ
Y/n nodded happily. George never stopped going on about how he loved her voice and it made her blush every time because she had never thought much of her voice but she was pleased that someone else did. Y/n continued stroking his ginger hair as she sang the first song that sprung to her head to him. The common room was quite empty at least where they were sat and Ginny had gone to talk with her friends so Y/n felt a bit more confident in singing a little louder to him as he dozed off into a comfortable sleep.
From then on, it became a kind of routine for Y/n to sit with George, singing to him softly and playing with his hair. He more often than not, fell asleep listening to the songs she sang. George had said that Y/n was his lullaby and it had made her blush.
It wasnโt long before there was one night that changed everything between George and Y/n without really changing anything at all. It was a quiet evening just like the day had been. With exams nearing, it had been hard for them both to catch each other properly so George had sent Y/n a letter asking her to meet in the old classroom on the second floor. It was a room that they both liked to call theirs but they didnโt tend to spend much time in it, they both preferred the comfort of the sofas in the common room compared to the floor or old desk chairs so Y/n was surprised at the location change. She turned up with a smile as she noticed George stood where she had been the night they had spent talking for hours. There was a lit lantern by his feet and there was what seemed to be a picnic laid out by the window. Y/nโs heart soared. It was a date.
He turned upon hearing the door open and he had a large smile. Y/n quirked her eyebrows up as she asked what all of this was about with a large smile at the effort he had made.
โI just wanted to spend some time with you away from exams and everyone else.โ George admitted, his hands were nervously shoved into his pockets. โYou know, like a date.โ He gulped loudly and Y/n wasted no time in crossing the room and situating herself on the floor, pulling George down to join her. He looked relived at the large smile on her face and he was especially pleased when she leaned across to kiss him soundly on the cheek.
The food for the picnic was compiled of packets of sweets and leftover food from the kitchens. Y/n loved it and George was glad.
They spent the entire time talking and eventually George ended up in his favourite place, laid out on Y/nโs lap looking up at her beautiful face in the dimming light as her hand played with his hair. George rested his hand over her free one and although she seemed a bit surprised, she quickly smiled and interconnected her hand tightly with his.
โSing to me?โ George asked hopefully, stroking his thumb over her knuckles tenderly. Y/n laughed before nodding and picking out a song, settling on a favourite of hers that her mother had sung to her when she was little. Y/n had almost expected George to fall asleep but as she continued singing, he looked more awake than ever and also a bit nervous still. Y/n got confused as George sat up straight and turned to her with a strange glint in his eyes, she stopped singing.
โWhatโs wrong Georgie?โ He smiled a bit at the nickname and bit his lip as he continued to look at Y/n. He only smiled more in response and scooted closer to her in the small gap between them. She smiled shyly as his hand came up to cup her jaw and she realised he was going to kiss her. They both closed their eyes as they simultaneously leaned in with matching bright smiles. The minute their lips met, a clichรฉd round of fireworks exploded in Georgeโs stomach as he finally felt complete. He could only hope that Y/n felt the same and as her lips moved deeper against his, he knew she did. That feeling was further confirmed when they pulled away and Y/nโs smile was brighter than George had ever seen it be before and he knew his own smile was just as wide and bright.
โWas that alright?โ George asked, still nervous. Y/n smiled with a nod before pulling him back in for a kiss and tangling her hands into his hair, pulling him closer. George hummed against her lips as both of them moved further and further into the exploration of each otherโs mouths.
To an objective eye, the both of them already looked like a couple and in fact, most were convinced they were, so it was no surprise to anyone when George and Y/n walking in to the Gryffindor common room hand in hand. It was only when they started kissing after their usual cuddling with Y/n singing to him that people turned to them in shock. But neither of them cared as they continued snogging.
A loud cry of protest came from near them both in the form of Fred who was complaining about sitting right next to them. Y/n made a brilliant point about other places to sit in the room but Fred only fought back so George made a counter point by kissing Y/n, catching her (and Fred) by surprise. The older twin moved to sit at the back of the room with a loud yell.
โIโm happy for you both but thatโs just rude!โ
You laughed as George pulled back, he joined in and turned to see Fred glaring at him from where he was now sat with Ron. Both your laughter grew as you settled back to cuddling. Your head was on Georgeโs shoulder as he played with your interlinked hands. You started to sing again, just out of habit and you could feel Georgeโs smile as he kissed your head.
โMy perfect lullaby.โย
