One of my recent school projects that caused me quite a bit of grief. We were assigned a “collection” of a topic to make into a poster, and I got mollusks. My mollusk anatomy is a bit suspect, so please forgive the inaccuracies.

Why are sea otters so important?
Sea otters are what’s known as a keystone species: their foraging and feeding behaviors have a major effect on the health of their ecosystem.
In Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, sea otters often spend their time in kelp forests, where they feed on invertebrates like sea urchins. Without the sea otters, sea urchin populations can get out of control – and since sea urchins eat kelp, that can spell trouble for the kelp forest ecosystem.
Off the coast of Washington state, sea otters were hunted to local extinction by the early 1900s. But in 1969 and 1970, a few dozen were reintroduced.
Since then, the sea otter population on the outer coast of Washington has grown to approximately 1,600 animals!
Researchers in Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and NOAA Fisheries’ Northwest Fisheries Science Center are now working to assess how this adorable species’ recovery has affected the nearshore ecosystem.

First look at task 2A
A space that integrates land, water and air as part of an assemblage. Looking at a solution that covers a wider spectrum. Although we need to find 4 clients, it started to connect directly and indirectly with other species as well. At this stage seagulls, globefish, seastar and boats become the non-humans. There can be a potential in affecting wider range of humans and non-humans.
A space that allows for the crossover of air, land and sea, where humans and non-humans can experience other realms. Where they can start to sympathise with each other.
This first iteration looks at how non-humans are protected from rubbish by the help of humans. Also, they become the main focus of protection as the space helps humans to research and understand non-humans better, in order to find a change to improve non-humans life. In turn, the humans are protected psychologically because of the attachment with the non-human subjects that they are researching. Fishermen can be the catalyst in informing the public (tourists or locals), helping to protect the dock tradition.

Exploring the relationship of humans and non-humans through visuals.
Exploring protection of the non-humans from collision of the boat, while also providing space for the boat to be cleaned and maintained.
Possibility for renewable energy for power and solving rubbish problem by leveraging water movements.
Possibility for leveraging on tides behaviour to reveal and block spaces. Might be useful for breeding zones or dwelling/feeding spot.
Need to find more ways to foreground non-humans. Currently non-humans consists of globefish, mussels/oysters, boats. Humans includes fishermen and tourists.
Maybe explore the idea of cultural protection/ civic?
Need to find a way to integrate humans and non-humans more.
Maybe integrate air, water and land? (Sea gulls as client?)

Speculative Photomontages
1 - A utopian space where water, air, and land are united as one as a part of an assemblage, where humans and non-humans live peacefully together.
2 - Flattening of the hierarchy of humans and non-humans. Both walk side-by-side to pursue their dreams. (Although they have different ambitions, they still co-exists and respect each other).
3 - A chaotic world of the porcupinefish, where humans changed the world around them without respecting the water environment where porcupinefish live. (Nature is chaotic as well, but there must be a balance for humans to be part of it without destroying it).
4 - A concept of mutual obligation, where humans and non-humans look after and care for each other as they need each other. (or maybe can be looked at in a different way, where humans can no longer harm non-humans as it will, in the end, harm humans back).

To stop hiding and camouflaging.
To stop evading and escaping.

To be free exploring the beyond.
To find a different space,
A space it has never seen before.
But it is scared,
To venture to the unknown,
To go to the unseen and the unheard.

Mid-Semester feedback...
1) Why do you choose to protect certain species instead of the other? What gives you a right to choose which one to protect?
2) By protecting one species, you are upsetting the balance of nature.
3) By protecting the Globefish and the predators, you are cancelling out the effect.
Few points that I can take away from this is that, we cannot just protect one species but we will have to look at the relationship with other species. Possibly a way to protect all species?
However, it contradicts with the third feedback from Jason which questions why there is a need to protect the predator and the prey. Jason mentions that by protecting the predator and the prey, it actually cancels out each other.
Then, Is there a solution that helps everyspecies without cancelling the effect?
More Brainstorming After the Feedback
Geometry testing to find best solution for waves and light protection. Also it only allows juvenile globefish to enter. It will also reinforce the decaying mooring structures.
After considerations, startling mechanism is not used but luring mechanism is used instead, because it will be better for the globefish. The use of the toxin will also naturally repel other species.
