Civilization Blog 1 - Time Keepers
I've recently come across a rather interesting civilization, they call themselves the “Time Keepers”. They appear to always have clocks for heads, but their bodies are a mystery to me, perhaps the same substance I’m made of? A far more complex organism? The sands of time? Whatever the case, there are groups of those that function the same and those that don’t. They interact civilly despite their differences, unlike most other civilizations I’ve come across, so appearance doesn’t seem an important factor to them.
According to them, the only purpose in their lives is to ensure everything happens at an exact time. Death, meetings, birth, everything that could possibly happen in their lives is kept on a strict schedule that they follow reverently. If any of them somehow manage to mess the schedule up, they decay at a rapid rate and everyone goes about their day, the remains scooped up later to be added to the “Hourglass”, which I’ll explain later once I’ve explored the city more. Their rules don’t seem to apply to outsiders, as I was late to a meeting with an elder of their city a day or so ago and he seemed perfectly intact, if a bit worried for my safety. A sketch of him is below, he seemed quite interested in my past and future travels, perhaps I could persuade him to join me?
Their town is a fascinating place. It’s full of clocks and trinkets of all kinds, some of which I’ve never seen before. Every building, every path, you’ll find a clock of some kind. For instance, one store I visited was a Sun Dial of all things, a transparent tarp was thrown over the whole thing so it could still tell time whilst the owner sold smaller versions of it. Another place was entirely made out of stop watch parts, some were even still put together, it was quite a laugh to see him click one on just to get rid of loiterers from off world. Speaking of off world, despite what I previously thought, these folks are quite well integrated with other planets, they trade clocks (such a surprise isn’t it?) for resources and bring their gospel to other planets that wish to learn.
