Penelope Featherington knew exactly what she was going to do and Colin Bridgerton was going to hate it.
Even as the thought entered her head, the door to his office was flung open, slamming violently against a filing cabinet, making it rattle. The man himself then appeared and strode rapidly over to her with a thunderous expression on his handsome face and slapped an envelope down on her desk, sending a stack of papers flying.
âI told you we needed to move that cabinet,â she said calmly as she gathered up that scattered documents and placed them back in a neat pile.
âSod the cabinet, what the hell is this, Penelope?â he demanded harshly, giving the envelope a prod.
She tilted her head, her copper curls bouncing slightly at the movement as she studied the offending object with a slight frown.
âWell, Iâm not sure what youâd call it, but it looks like a letter to me.â
At his harshly drawn in breath, she looked up in time to see his jaw clench as he clearly fought against voicing what he thought of her sarcastic response.
Visibly getting himself under control, he forced a grim smile to his face and said in a clipped tone, âI know itâs a letter. I just want to know why you left it on my desk?â
Penelope gazed at him in confusion.
âBecause itâs for you. It wouldnât do any good leaving it on mine, now would it?â
âI would prefer you hadnât left it anywhere,â he bit out angrily.
âBut then you wouldnât know that I was going, would you?â she pointed out reasonably.
A deafening silence followed her remark and his dark blue eyes grew even stormier as he pressed his full lips together in a thin line.
The flicker of guilt that had been burning away in her gut ever since sheâd resolved to hand in her resignation flared up into a veritable bonfire making her squirm a little uncomfortably. He obviously wasnât happy about her decision any more than she was. Perversely, it felt nice to be wanted by him even if it was only in a work capacity. So much so that, for a second, she almost changed her mind.
Almost.
But then she thought of her family. Of her sisters who had managed to find real love against all the odds. Of her mother who now had a second chance herself.
And then she thought of all the years sheâd been in love with Colin.
She wasnât stupid, sheâd spent enough time with him to know nothing was ever going to happen between them. At first as friends when they were younger and then the last four years when sheâd worked for him. There had been trips away and too many overnighters to count, all of them giving him ample opportunity to make a move if heâd wanted to, but heâd never once looked at her with anything other than friendship.
In fact, over the last couple of years sheâd wondered if it was even that anymore.
Ever since her cousin, Marina, had broken his heart, the Colin she knew had completely disappeared. No longer the affable, kind young man sheâd loved from the moment theyâd met, his heartbreak had hardened him. His youthful declaration of swearing off women had become a lifestyle and he guarded his heart with a fierceness that had eventually bled into all aspects of his life.
Being a seasoned traveller with an immensely popular blog at that time, it had been expected that he go abroad and lick his wounds in private when theyâd split up. But to everyoneâs surprise, heâd decided to take up Anthonyâs standing offer of joining the family company and thrown himself into that work instead.
The Bridgerton Regencyâs were their own chain of exclusive hotels, and his wanderlust had been sated by taking on projects overseas that had helped move the company to another level.
Initially, Anthony had been overjoyed that his younger brother had joined the fold and was finally doing a âproper jobâ but, slowly, even he had come to see that Colin was a changed man.
Heâd tried to talk to him. All his family had, but Colin had pushed back insisting he was perfectly happy with his life. To prove it, he took on even more work and then the hard shell heâd encased himself in started to affect his relationships within the family. Afraid that if they continued to press, heâd retreat further, theyâd collectively decided to take a step back, agreeing to support him silently wherever they could.
His mother, Violet, worried for him most. She always ensured that there was some family event happening whenever he returned from a business trip and made certain that he attended no matter how much he tried to refuse.
It was a small thing, but she feared she may never see him again otherwise.
And as his workload increased, so did the turnover in his staff. When heâd gone through seven PAâs in six months, Anthony had finally stepped in. No-one wanted to work the hours that Colin demanded, and word had got around within the company that he wasnât the easiest of bosses.
As a last resort, Anthony had approached Penelope for a favour. Sheâd been fresh out of university and looking for a job while attempting to write her first novel. Six months, heâd said. Just temporary while he found his brother the right assistant. Sheâd reluctantly agreed, her heart overruling her head. Besides, she felt she owed him. Although Colin had never openly blamed her for what had happened between her cousin and him, the guilt of being the one to bring her into his life weighed heavily on her, nonetheless.
Six months turned into a year. A year turned into two, then three, then four. As with their friendship, theyâd clicked as work colleagues as well and it had been all too easy to stay.
And like the rest of his family, sheâd done her best to look after him in her own way. Making sure he ate during late night sessions. Quietly spreading his workload so he wasnât always working all hours. Ensuring nothing was planned for when his mother had something she wanted him to attend.
Anthony had seen it. Seen it and taken her aside one day to thank her. If heâd realised that her feelings ran deeper than she showed, heâd never said anything. Not directly anyway.
Heâd allowed her that at least.
She wasnât sure what he was going to say when he found out that sheâd now quit, but she hoped heâd understand.
âIs there a problem, Penelope? Between us I mean?â Colin asked gruffly, drawing her back into the moment. âBecause if there is, couldnât you at least talk to me about it first?â
A problem? Where to begin?
âNo. Nothingâs wrong,â she lied.
She picked up the desk calendar heâd given her last Christmas and debated whether it was classed as a personal or an office item. Deciding on the latter, she put it back down then picked up her âWriters Do It Creativelyâ mug instead. There could no doubt that that was hers. She placed it in a small box with the rest of her belongings with a slight nod.
âThen why are you leaving?â
Hearing the barely contained frustration in his voice, she glanced up. Heâd moved around the side of the desk now, looming over her so that she had to tilt her head back uncomfortably just to look at him. Despite herself, she felt her heart rate speed up as he gazed intently down at her.
âI just think itâs time.â
âYou think itâs time,â he repeated flatly.
She nodded then stood up, suddenly needing to get more space between them. He didnât move back as she expected and she found herself level with his broad chest currently encased in a pristine white shirt, blue tie and perfectly tailored navy suit.
âExcuse me,â she muttered, not looking at him.
He didnât. He remained exactly where he was and she could practically feel him glaring down at her.
âYou wanted time off even though weâre right in the middle of an important deal and I rearranged things to give you that,â he began tersely. âNow youâre back and giving me this!â He picked up the envelope and crushed it in his fist. âWhatâs happened? Is it your mother? Did she do something?â
She shook her head and glanced up at him. His eyes were a positive tempest now and she straightened up a little, raising her chin.
âNo, she was fine. Everyone was fine. Happy, even.â
âThen I donât understand,â he burst out irately.
âWhatâs to understand, Colin?â she retorted, irritation seeping into her voice. âI just donât want to work here anymore.â
His mouth tightened, an undefined emotion flickering across his face before he hid it behind the deceptively bland mask he donned so easily now. Penelope frowned, a prickle of concern telling her she might have hurt him, only for her to push the thought aside almost immediately. More likely, he was aggravated that she was disrupting his well-ordered life. Besides, she thought bitterly, heâd have to actually let himself feel anything to be wounded.
He took a step back and she felt as though she could breathe again. He studied her a moment, then, in a tone that was as devoid of any emotion as his expression had become he asked, âIs it really so bad working with me? I thought we made a good team.â
They did. The best. But it wasnât enough. She was done living for him, it was time to live for herself.
âI work for you, Colin, not with you,â she reminded him curtly. âAnd it was only meant to be temporary. I have things I want to do with my life. I want to meet someone, have a family, write my book. Iâve put everything on hold for the last four years and I donât want to do that anymore.â
She turned away and quickly checked the drawers in the desk for anything else she might have missed, then picked up the box of her belongings. She needed to leave before she said more things sheâd likely regret later.
âI see. I didnât know you felt that way.â
She gave him a pitying look. Of course he didnât.
âHow could you? You never asked and I never told you. Itâs always been the next deal, and the next and the next. It never ends.â She stopped and shook her head, all her irritation vanishing suddenly, leaving a hollow emptiness in its stead. What was the point? âIâm tired, Colin,â she finally told him softly.
He stared at her, his expression still giving nothing away, and then he nodded abruptly.
âFine, if this is what you want, then all thatâs left for me to do is to wish you well.â
She gazed at him, looking for a sign of something more. Maybe an, âIâll miss youâ or a shake of her hand, for Godâs sake. Anything. She just wanted one tiny flicker of the man...of her friend that she used to know.Â
The seconds lengthened, but when he remained as stoic as ever, the last ember of hope inside her turned to ash.
It should have pleased her, now she could move on.
Instead, all she felt was incredible sadness.
âThank you,â she muttered, forcing a smile to her face.
Head held high, she walked past him to the door, her heart growing heavier with every step. Opening it up, she gave him one last look and saw he was still standing in the middle of the room watching her intently, hands shoved deep into his pockets. On impulse, went back to him, noting his eyebrows rise in surprise.
Raising onto her tiptoes, she steadied the box with one hand then placed the other on his shoulder and gave him a brief kiss on his cheek.
Feeling him tense under her fingertips, she mumbled out a quick goodbye and hurriedly left without a backward glance.
It wasnât until she was in the back of the black cab sheâd flagged down, that she let the tears fall.
It all felt so final.
Yes, she was friends with the rest of the family, but she could easily avoid seeing him as he was so rarely around.
Or, what was more likely, he would avoid seeing her.
She caught the cabbie giving her a couple of concerned glances in the rearview mirror and summoned a watery smile.
âBad Christmas party,â she told him.
âWell, whoever it was, theyâre not worth it,â he offered in a sympathetic tone.
She merely nodded in return and wiped her eyes. Clutching her box to her, she spent the rest of the journey sniffling and blinking back more tears. When they eventually pulled up outside her small, terraced house, sheâd gained some semblance of control and exited the cab, giving the driver a generous tip before heading inside.
She put the box down onto the kitchen table then went over to fill the kettle and put it on to boil.  Letting out a sigh, she slumped back against the counter and got out her phone. Pulling up her messages she went to the last one from Eloise and read it again. It was the usual open invite to go to Aubrey Hall with the rest of the family if Colin ever stopped âbeing Scrooge for long enoughâ so that she could attend.
She shouldn't really accept.
Although, as the rest of her family were going to be their respective partners for Christmas, she didnât really want to disrupt any of their plans. And, she also didnât relish the idea of being alone either.
Glancing up, she pushed off the counter and headed into her lounge. No tree. No decorations. She was supposed to be abroad with Colin finalising yet another deal as they had done every year since sheâd started working for him. She understood why. She knew it was a hard time of year for him, but she also missed being home and the lure of a proper traditional Christmas with some of her favourite people was proving difficult to ignore.
She looked down at her friends offer again and bit her lip. What harm would it do? Colin wouldnât be there; he would be jetting off tomorrow so there was no worry of running into him. And it would also give her a chance to speak to Anthony face to face and tell him about her decision to leave.
She dithered for a few more seconds then typed a response explaining that there had been an unexpected change of plans and she was free to join them. Moments later, Eloise rung her.
âWhen are you coming?â she asked without preamble.
âI was thinking Iâll drive down tonight, if thatâs okay?â she replied hopefully.
âOf course,â Eloise assured her immediately, âIâll let mum know. Just be careful though, theyâve forecast snow.â
âIt wonât snow,â Penelope scoffed lightly. âNot properly anyway. Itâll be the usual few flakes that donât settle, thatâs all.â
âMaybe,â her friend allowed, then added sternly, âBest leave soon though, just in case. You know how dark it gets out here in the sticks, you donât want to get stuck.â
âI will. I have to pack first, then Iâll be on my way.â
âMessage me when you leave,â Eloise ordered and after Penelope told her she would, they finished the call.
She was relieved that she hadnât asked about Colin. He was a subject Eloise tended to avoid ever since she had admitted her feelings for him when her friend had, yet again, been moaning one day, about the amount of Penelopeâs time her brother was taking up with work. How it wasnât fair. How just because heâd turned into a workaholic, it didnât mean that he had to drag her along for the ride too.
âItâs because I love him, El,â sheâd confessed, cutting her friend off abruptly as she'd finally revealed the secret sheâd been hiding for years. âIâve always loved him, and I just want to make his life a bit better if I can. Easier. And I know he'll never feel the same, especially after everything that's happened, but my heart made its choice a long time ago, so..."
Sheâd shaken her head and lifted her shoulders in a helpless little shrug, unsure of how her friend would react.
Eloise had stared silently at her for a long moment, then finally said, âWellâŚI donât think that idiot deserves youâŚbut Iâm glad he has you all the same.â
And that had been that. Theyâd never spoken of it again.
The kettle clicked off and she hurried back into the kitchen to pour herself a tea. An hour later, sheâd had a quick shower and was putting the last of her clothes into a case.
She gathered the presents sheâd bought for the family and placed them into a small holdall, pleased that she would be able to give them to everyone in person this year. Well, all except Colin. Sheâd leave his with Anthony.
Taking her luggage downstairs, she placed it by the door and was just about to go and fetch her handbag when the doorbell suddenly sounded. Frowning, she turned back and opened it up, hoping it wasnât carol singers. She was already going to have enough trouble getting out of London as it was without being delayed any longer into rush hour.
She froze.
It wasnât carol singers.
It was the last person in the world she expected see.

I already asked a friend to beta read A Different Approach, she says she'll be able to do so next month, so that's the first one that'll be back, I'm finishing the epilogue for it.

"She had way too much tonight. And he knew she would, she does this every time a guy breaks her heart. Or her ego, maybe. Her heart never really seems in it, which is confusing to him since Penelope does just about everything heart-first.
Except dating.
He wonders if that has something to do with her upbringing, her mother, a lack of love. Some sort of avoidance of it all, some sort of block.
But still, every time. With Henry she drank every single beer out of his fridge. She hates beer. He held her hair back as she hurled for hours in the early morning. With Phineas she showed up at his already plastered, mascara stains on her cheeks as she smiled weird and wide and asked to come inside. With George she was calmer, but she still called him after drinking a whole bottle of wine by herself and he could tell she had been crying. It's always clear in her voice. In her eyes.
The garden feels different in the night. The moonlight is reflected in her face like a illusion. Her hair shines in the silence.
Colin never thought he was going to kiss Penelope.
Why he would? She belonged to a different realm. She was ethereal and dreamy. So, how she would give him something so special to him. How she actually would ask him to kiss her? Why him? He doesn't know the answer. The only thing he knows it's he wants to kiss her.
He can feel her breath getting more intense. He can't feel his. The air is getting warmer. Her lips get close to his lips. They feel soft and hot. He's trying to recognising the feeling. It's like the sunlight caressing his face in a long freezing day. He feels dizzy.
It's just a short moment, but he wants to be there. He wants to feel that again. So, he searches for her lips. Her big blue eyes are looking at him. He's drowning in them like in the deep of the ocean. He doesn't want to swim.
She's like a siren, he will follow.
His lips are touching hers again. And then, he can't think in anything else. He's lost in them. He doesn't know if it's day or night. He doesn't know why he's there or even where he's. But he knows he belongs there, in this moment. Everything in his life feels insignificant compared to this.
Her lips are so tender and her skin close to his skin makes him shake inside.
He can't think on something else that what it is. It's a kiss, a Penelope kiss.
The only one thing he wouldn't never dream about, but it's not just a dream. It's not? What if he open his eyes and she's not there? What if she's not real? She has to be. He needs to know. He needs to know if she's feeling the same he's feeling. How she would not?
Her nose caresses his in an intent of asking him to stay. Maybe this is all what it's. The words in the books can never reach for the way his chest and all his body is feeling right now.
He wants more. He wants to be in her lips forever. He wants to die in them.
She's stolen his soul with her kiss. He doesn't care. He would give it to her willingly without hesitation. His soul belongs to her.
This is a new episode of "all Polin first times we didn't see" and these is a mix of stuff, including at least one request.
It's after Pen has giving birth, some months have already passes but Colin feels inspired that afternoon. He can't read, can't write, all he can think about is how much his gorgeous wife is looking absolutely ethereal in the new dressing gown - blue Bridgerton of course.
But he knows that Pen would look even better naked. So with that goal in mind, he closes the door of the studio in which both him and Pen are working at the moment. No distractions allowed. The baby is in safe hands at the moment and they have a couple of hours before dinner. He'd love to have more time for what he has in mind but it will do.
Pen now follows his eyes with interest, and when Colin is now in her space, she gets up. Colin very carefully proceed to put everything in order until the desk is empty. Then, he methodically removes her dress, stay and camisole until she is naked. He kisses her deeply before lifting her up (Pen does squee in surprise at this) and puts her on the desk.
He remains dressed, because he is not important right now. It's all about her. His Goddess. He kisses her again, and then he explores every inch of her body with his fingers. The lips, the curve of her neck, her back, her gorgeous thighs, her absolutely breathtaking breast - even more now that she is feeding their son - where her nipples are already leaking. He has plan for those buds, but before he needs to go down on her stomach.
When he is there, he kisses her womb. He murmurs a prayer in thanks because she is safe and healthy as well as their son, before going back up with his lips, catching her nipples along the way. The looks at her, a question in his eyes but Pen knows already and trust him with her life so she nods, and Colin start to suck. He is surprised that her milk is warm - but more than anything, he marvels at women and particularly Pen, because what she did with their son is nothing short of a miracle.
These couple of hours are just about her. After she is wriggling for the emotion and the arousal his actions are causing her, he goes on his knees to taste his absolution. He opens her legs to make space for him and firstly he kisses her all around, before truly eating her with lips and tongue until she cries out loud and make him feel like a giant for making her feel so much pleasure.
When he knows she is close, he aids her with his fingers, like he did in the carriage and during their first time, until she is coming loudly. But he is now done. Nit even close. He wait for her to calm down, before starting repeating the same cycle. All over again. A second time. A third time. By the fourth she is collapsed on the desk, can't move, can't think, she can only feel. And when she comes that time, he gets flooded by her sacred juices, re-baptized in her name.
It's sinful to think as much but he can't help himself. He comes untouched in that moment, in his breeches, and he cleans her up wit his tie, before redressing her.
"What about you?" She asks and those are the first words beside moans she has spoken since they have started. Colin looks at her "it was not about me" but he agrees that she can do it to him too one day. In the end, every Goddess needs her own God.
