something something about writing a collection of very diverse characters from a multitude of franchises and being obsessed with the canon they're from while also rewriting it all because the writers didn't know them like i do. it is also very possible i forgot about aforementioned canon considering i consume media like a kid eats candy during halloween.

alfira's killing is a pall over the camp. you have been uncharacteristically quiet since @violenthunt confessed to it: there is something pensive and drawn in the set of your features where until now there has only been mischief, laughter, your goddess' light. you do not speak to anyone - no jokes for gale, nothing to tease at lae'zel's stoic conviction. you were her, once; young, unproven, aching to be brave. sitting at the mouth of your tent, you stare at the sigil istar has drawn, so stark against the pale earth. [ you do not recognise this ritual. you are not learned in that sense, but you recognise that it is one, and you are afraid. ]

alfira's terrified features remain behind closed eyelids; an horrific sight that floats over the silence that has settled in the campsite. only astarion seems willing to interact with her, and so she settles near him, cross-legged and calm, while he tells her of the city; of its sinewy streets. istar has never been, does not remember.

after a time astarion shoos her away. tells her that she has to quake in her boots some more. so her body brings her back to the crime, the sigil & the corpse. she supposes it is her job to bury alfira beneath flowers. it will take hours. muscles burn as she digs & digs & digs the girl's grave. there is no complaint from the sorceress. the bard was too young for death and maggots will absolutely make a feast of her. the least istar can do is make her deathbed a comfortable one.

althea's voice has her raising her head above the mud. istar's gaze, cold and calculating, meets her head-on. "would you have wanted me to lie?" she inquires, and the tone is not biting, yet its softness is salt over a putrid wound. lying would have been cruel; being honest is kindness they do not understand yet. though istar sees it for what it is: the girl will get to rest, whereas istar will hold the weight of her death. a lie would have kept alfira walking among them, a cold shadow, a phantom pain. "i do not know how it happened, yet it did. omitting such a fact would have been callous of me." her head tilts oh so slightly. "but perhaps i should have been more sensible in my admission of guilt." there, a gift, or something that resembles it. istar's truthful tone is always poisonous in the sense that, the more you get to know her, the less you understand what makes her breathe, move, choose. a mystery design behind her every action and no way for you to understand it fully.

something something about orin's focus being on the performance of death and the beauty of its unfolding versus istar's cold ruthlessness. how orin doesn't kill istar because the idea of her suffering from the tadpole and possibly dying as a slave to the absolute is more theatrical. and therefore more appealing. how hurting the father's flesh and letting it rot in a life so far removed from its origin is a thousand times more terribly poetic than simply killing your opponent. how orin always chooses poetry over efficiency. creating her own bloody narrative in which, for once, she is the protagonist

gale's "oh i have a magic touch" say more sir

astarion is a bit fussy with the rest of the party. old habits die hard and after centuries with people who can't see their own reflections and who still have to look Desirable, he has learned to help in any way he can by simply. fixing whatever is wrong. probably almost got his hand cut off by lae'zel and his digits burnt off by karlach's skin, but. after a while it's part of their habits. if astarion sees you looking terrible, he'll fix it quietly & will go on his way. he also expects others to do it for him and will absolutely lose it if he realizes people are just letting him walk around dishevelled.

bg3 events.

alfira's murder is. unexpected. but istar feels no remorse. she immediately confesses to her group. she is deeply amused that she can confess and yet not to be punished.

she uses intimidation to open doors, and it is incredible how many times it simply seems to. work.

her hair has been cut shorter than her previous life. she doesn't know.

THE SWAMP.

istar fires at the image of auntie ethel, which kills the brothers. she doesn't really care.

she immediately recognizes that the swamp is. well. a swamp

she cheerily introduces herself to ethel & asks gale to magic lock the hidden stairs to prevent her from going downstairs.

auntie ethel is killed & everyone is saved.

she doesn't give mayrina the power to resurrect her husband but she does listen to her for a while to offer some kind of comfort

THE VILLAGE.

istar finds the book and gives it to astarion

she saves barcus wroot but only because she wants to ask him questions

THE DRUID GROVE.

istar steals the grove's resources while the guard lies there, helpless.

she inspects kharga's room and goes to the swamp to find proof of her betrayal.

she asks nettie for help & kills her once she has been poisoned

she talks to zorru with lae'zel, and helps her intimidate the poor boy.

istar is unsure whether she wants to save the grove or not. the reason being every moment she spends within it, she gets an overwhelming sense of distress. grief so grand she feels she could choke on it, were she not focused on breathing through her nose. she has no idea why. (it reminds her of eryri. it reminds her of home)

THE OWLBEAR.

istar kills the owlbear mother but lets the cub live.

THE SELUNITE TEMPLE SLASH GOBLIN CAMP.

gets the mark of the absolute because, i quote, "i wonder how it would feel like to have my skin burn". it shows the complete dissonance between her body and her mind. a result of kressa's treatment

goes with the goblin priestess. kills her. kills the goblin and the thieves.

COMPANIONS.

recruits shadowheart and astarion first. she likes them both and doesn't mind their secrets. tells shadowheart she can worship whoever, and tells astarion he can feed on her. likes astarion even more after he admits he doesn't care about her killing alfira

then gale, then lae'zel. likes lae'zel (who's immediately attracted to her ruthlessness), doesn't know about gale though. especially after the alfira incident, when he acts like he's Better than her, only to admit he lied and put them all at risk with his orb. at least istar didn't lie

then wyll. doesn't care much about him

istar of eryri / prior to bg3.

bhaal's filthy joke. a human girl, daughter of the god of murder. made from his flesh. given to a human mother whose magical heritage has been desperately dormant for generations.

the first massacre comes when she is seven. magic exploding & the whole village, terrified. the girl will burn at the stake, they say. for our safety! except istar is afraid. istar is so afraid that her magic takes over: the humans kill one another, motivated by a whisper they do not recognize but imagine as their own.

she leaves. she spends a few years as a thief. takes what she needs and never says thank you. never stays long enough to even care about whose propriety is between her hands. all that matters is that she survives

she ends up hearing about malborne, an elf sage who is currently detained by humans. thinking it might be her chance to be magically trained, istar plans his escape. it's the first time she kills, and she is not afraid of her ability to do so. she is cold, and ruthless, and perfectly aware of how wrong her reaction is.

malborne recognizes what she is from the very beginning, but says nothing. he believes that evil is taught, and so he does everything he can to teach her kindness. he knows her magic will change the world

she spends years among the elves of eryri. she adopts a small dragon egg that she found on her adventures with irrdith. for a while, life is beautiful.

she keeps her hair long. she braids it every chance she gets. she breathes the wind of the forest and drinks the water directly from the source. she collects flowers and rocks. she is a child of the mud & finds no problem with that. it is the first time she feels like she belongs

it is not bhaal who destroys istar's peaceful life. it is not even one of his spawns. humans destroy eryri. burn it to the ground. want the riches and the gold & kill the elves for them.

istar tries to defend the forest and fails. all she can do is run away, a sword in her side and blood down her cheeks, khairos with her. her last vision of her home is fire, irrdith's lifeless body, malborne falling to the ground.

she is angry. she is so, so angry. so she plans her revenge. malborne might have taught her kindness but his death taught her that no amount of benevolence will prevent men from hurting you. she kills the soldiers, their generals, creates a river of blood that takes her all the way to the king who gave the order.

it is once the king's head has been severed from his body that bhaal finds her and sends her home. she doesn't appear to be very old, but she knows that magic is responsible for her youthfulness. that, too, is a gift from bhaal: no one expects murder to wear a young woman's sweet face

grief is debilitating. rage is fuel. she soldiers on. kills because she is asked to. there is no pleasure, only desire for revenge. fire, thunder & blood. she rises in the cult because she finds no solace in the blood spilled; she is cold and ruthless and terribly good at getting the job done. she kills and kills and kills but it is never enough. it does not bring her home back. every time her eyes close, she sees her forest on fire.

orin serves under her but orin is jealous. of istar's detachment. of istar's calm cruelty. of istar's way of killing that is so impersonal and yet so deliciously vicious.

istar helps with the elder brain because she wants the power for herself. power so grand she would never be hurt again. she would never feel grief. or anger. she would be whole. she doesn't care about betraying ketheric or gortash. in fact, it makes it more fun. to play a game knowing none of the players matter.

then orin gets her. orin gets her by targeting khairos. the very young dragon is slaughtered, left for his sorceress to find. istar is so distraught she makes a mistake. that's all orin needs to get her infected.

kressa's torture is perhaps the worst thing that could have happened to istar. the sorceress doesn't have much, but her body is hers; her body is hers, hers, hers, until it isn't. until, after a time, she doesn't even recognize her own fingers. she screams and bites and tries to claw her way out but it doesn't matter. nothing does.

waking up without memories is terrifying but istar doesn't seem entirely fazed: she soldiers on. makes alliances and finds ways to survive. her only motivation? getting revenge to whoever did this to her.

this playthrough is fun. istar just walks around, collects herbs, makes poisons, makes stuff explode, and just finds ways to kill everyone without having (1) true fighter in the group
