Trivial Pursuit: Silver Screen Edition
So I found this card set at a library annex for 50 cents. It’s from 1983 and the questions are so difficult! I thought it would be fun to share some examples on here and maybe even make it a regular thing. There are questions from movies I’m sure were popular then, but are now somewhat obscure. I’m sure very very savvy film buffs might get some of the questions. I know I made a few lucky guesses but 1958 Cha-Cha Champion of Hong Kong? It’s someone many people know but some may be hard-pressed to guess. Film star that died at 33 on July 3, 1965 who was then promptly stuffed? It has to be some kind of animal, of course.
As you can tell, I’ve had some fun with these. My only criticism is that some of the questions the game writers chose are rude and misogynistic. The underage Brooke Shields card is downright creepy: “What film had Brooke Shields referring to her breasts as ‘boopies’?”, “What actress’s best performances are arguably her designer jean ads?”, “Who portrayed an 11-year-old prostitute in Pretty Baby?”. Yikes! The writers of these questions were extremely tacky. More examples: “What full-figured actress is famed for flogging bras on TV?”, “What 1953 film teamed the quadruple whammy of Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe?”, “What color were Lois Lane’s panties in Superman?” Sheesh, were they trying to be funny or something, because I’m just shaking my head right now. Compare these to the questions about men where they ask “Who Oscared for...”, “What writer did so-and-so play...”, “Which actor said such-and-such line...”, etc.
There are also a lot of questions where O.J. Simpson is the answer. Always prefaced with “Which former football player,” as if there were many former football players who acted in so many movies. Kind of weird.
My favorite questions are more along the lines of what film featured Richard Dreyfuss as an ichthyologist? What triggered the signal from the obelisk in 2001: A Space Odyssey? How many Alfred Hitchcock films did Jimmy Stewart star in? How many projectors were used in the original Cinerama process?
Other things I noticed: lots of questions about John Wayne, Mae West, Humphrey Bogart, Marlon Brando, and Warren Beatty.
There are the never-in-a-million-years type questions where almost everyone would have to rely solely on Google because they’d never be able to guess on their own. Who played Citizen Kane as a boy? ...??? .... how should I f-ing know?! What British comic bashed his ukelele to screen immortality? ...for crying out loud ask someone who cares.
I stared at a wall and gloated for a bit after geeking out on questions from the Star Wars card. Where was the rebel base located in Star Wars? What film featured the line: “Traveling through hyperspace ain’t like dusting crops, boy”? How many Oscar nominations did Star Wars receive? How many suns set on Tatooine? Heart eyes emoji.
Hmm, well, now I guess you could see what ridiculous things I spend my time on when I can’t sleep. I didn’t mean to write this much either. In any case, I hope to come up with a nice way to post the interesting questions/answers from this card set. I’m finished for now. Thanks for reading.
Star Wars director says it is ‘the nightmare of every storyteller’ that their films, which were made for cinema, will be seen on tiny screens
Plenty of people agree.....
Watching Movies
It’s better to read a book than watch a movie on a phone.
I love this film: 'Marriage Italian-Style'
Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean, 1955
“This could be us”
Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford
Imagine knowing someone for so long that even if you don’t see each other for years, you can come together again and still have so much chemistry.
Liana is using Letterboxd to share film reviews and lists with friends. Favorite films: Amadeus (1984), The Fall (2006), Rocky (1976), Cabaret (1972). Liana’s profile contains 743 films and 7 lists. Bio: Just an admirer.
I’ve discovered Letterboxd.com. I don’t feel like I need to post to two movie diaries anymore. Letterboxd offers the advantage of rating and critiquing the film in an organized way. It has a nice interface. It is more community oriented, yes, but it still feels personal, and it is much more streamlined. Plus I can make lists. I might save this space for when I want to participate in a blogathon, share film festival memories, or share tidbits about the cinema that I find amusing. I’ve already been kind of doing that so...I guess you could say that instead of a diary, I’ll be treating this as more of a scrapbook. Anyway, I also have an extra idea for what else to add to this Tumblr and I think it will be fun. More later.
Directed by Kenneth Branagh. With Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, Helena Bonham Carter. When her father unexpectedly passes away, young Ella finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and her daughters. Never one to give up hope, Ella's fortunes begin to change after meeting a dashing stranger.
Watching this movie felt like looking at a very pretty vase for a long time.
Directed by Chris Weitz, Paul Weitz. With Chris Rock, Regina King, Chazz Palminteri, Eugene Levy. After dying before his time, an aspiring comic gets a second shot at life...by being reincarnated as a wealthy but un-likeable businessman.
This is an amusing update to Heaven Can Wait, a film I watched oh so long ago upon my dad’s recommendation. I love the premise and the thoughtfulness of the story and its characters.
Directed by Sylvester Stallone. With Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers. Rocky struggles in family life after his bout with Apollo Creed, while the embarrassed champ insistently goads him to accept a challenge for a rematch.
I don’t know why I held out on the Rocky series for so long. Sylvester Stallone is a national treasure.
Directed by Anthony Minghella. With Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche, Willem Dafoe, Kristin Scott Thomas. At the close of WWII, a young nurse tends to a badly-burned plane crash victim. His past is shown in flashbacks, revealing an involvement in a fateful love affair.
Extremely romantic and sad and moody.
Directed by Paul Feig. With Melissa McCarthy, Rose Byrne, Jude Law, Jason Statham. A desk-bound CIA analyst volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent diabolical global disaster.
I knew I would like this.
Directed by Frank Oz. With Steve Martin, Goldie Hawn, Dana Delany, Julie Harris. Con artist Gwen moves into Newton's empty house without his knowledge, and begins setting up house posing as his new wife.
Pretty silly.
I love this film: 'Museum Hours'
Directed by Joe Johnston. With Sam Neill, William H. Macy, Téa Leoni, Alessandro Nivola. A decidedly odd couple with ulterior motives convince Dr. Alan Grant to go to Isla Sorna (the second InGen dinosaur lab.), resulting in an unexpected landing...and unexpected new inhabitants on the island.
Not great. The only person who saves this is Sam Neill. And maybe Alessandro Nivola, who looks like someone who is going to UTEP in this movie.
Directed by Steven Spielberg. With Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough. During a preview tour, a theme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloned dinosaur exhibits to run amok.
Who doesn’t like this movie, like who for real?
