EMIYA Alter being so edgy was funny until you realize it’s one of F/GO’s rare moments of true non-comedic hopelessness. He really is that far gone from who EMIYA was. He really is that lost.

You make him remember what it was like to be a hero, albeit a grudging one, but his Alter existence cannot function as EMIYA anymore so his body’s deteriorating and breaking down because of the logic error, that’s where they kintsugi comes from as you ascend him. He fundamentally cannot find peace or contentment, he can never know joy again, he can’t exist if he does.

he forgets more of himself the further you bond with him because of that too. all his myroom lines sound tired and resigned, starting at bond 3 his identity is notably eroding, and by bond 5 he literally just doesn’t remember himself anymore because he’s been reduced to a dozen contradictions in a gold stitched trenchcoat. you’re letting him be a hero once again but he can’t remember ever wanting that in the first place. he’s in a permanent state of dissociation because this plane of existence can’t support him and the only reason he’s still here, somehow, in some way, is because shirou emiya is someone who makes impossible things happen, for better or worse

So what's Emiya Alter's "deal" because I'm a huge Emiya stan but I don't know much about him outside of FSN

emiya alter seems to be from some variation of the extra timeline. the event that caused him to become alter is when he was one of the few people able to see through kiara’s evil nature and decided to take her out before she could cause any real damage, but in order to get to her he had to go through her hundreds of cult members who were willing to lay down their life for her in an instant. he killed all of them but it’s ambiguous whether he even managed to properly kill kiara in the end and the slaughter he caused just to potentially save lives by killing this one woman who hadn’t even done anything particularly wrong yet meant he had to quadruple down on the ‘kill the few to save the many’ philosophy in order to not just break down right there, to the point where it became one of his skills

Ridiculed FortitudeA mental pollution skill, conferred when he inverted. Unlike Mental Pollution, this is closer to a type of brainwash that forces a fixed concept onto the owner. The ideology bestowed to him was to approve of the Guardian’s original way of being, which gives priority to safeguarding the Human Order and forsakes everything else. If he hadn’t been conferred A Rank, this man would not be able to fully display his powers while on an inverted state.

basically he absolutely needs to convince himself at all cost that it was for the good of the human order if he wants to be able to somehow still live with himself. that’s also why emiya alter doesn’t resist his fate as counter guardian, he has to believe in the righteousness of the counter force and A rank brainwashed himself into doing so

contradiction is the name of the game however and emiya alter is winning it. he approves of the counter force out of necessity, but can only do that if he declares himself evil enough to do so first.coldly disposing of individual people for the sake of an abstract greater good so fundamentally goes against shirou emiya’s personal ideals that in order to be the efficient counter force agent he forcibly convinced himself to be he had to dispose of the remaining scraps of that identity. he’s so thoroughly going against his own nature that it’s overriding his existence and he basically only still exists as an arguably separate entity through sheer fucking willpower

HOWEVER

shirou emiya was hollow and only existed through sheer fucking willpower from the start. even if the exterior is unrecognisable the fundamentals haven’t changed. he’s unbearably edgy in battle but it’s to convince himself of his mercilessness more than anything and in private conversation he’s much more mellow and makes fun of his own edgyness. he’s slowly losing his memories to his own nonexistence but because he never had much of an identity from the start forgetting the one he convinced himself of later just means he loops back around to being more shirou-like than vanilla archer the more he forgets. an empty shell held together by nothing a desire to help others does not function any different just because you scraped off the paint.

i’ve been wanting to research runes for witchcraft purposes and i have too much love for cu so i complied the examples i could find where he uses his runes. let’s go

(from left to right) we have…..

- ansuz (intelligence, leadership, power of words) - berkano (growth, liberation) - uruz (physical strength or creative force) - kenaz (fire, torch, knowledge) - eihwaz (defense, trustworthiness, protection) - algiz (divine protection, shield, guardian) - uruz (physical strength or creative force) - ansuz (intelligence, leadership, power of words) - last one could be sowulo (sun, life force)

- eihwaz stands for protection, defense and trustworthiness. he uses it to burn archer’s arrow out of the air in order to protect his allies. it’s one of the most powerful protection runes and represents the yew the tree of life and death. the unique shape of the rune symbolises the union of the two universes. it can also be used to symbolise endurance, union, resilient strength and ability to deflect any difficulty one faces.

cú you bastard (deception, trickery, mixed messages) a reversed rune is called “merkstave”, aka “dark stick.” a merkstave ansuz may also be used in a misunderstanding or when there is lack of communication. in the event of a merkstave ansuz, it’s said that you should take a moment to make sure that your line of communication hasn’t disappeared, or to make sure you aren’t lying to yourself or others. sidenote that this rune can also be seductive.

woo another one that actually makes logical sense

- kenaz (fire, torch, knowledge, light within)

kenaz symbolises the control and harnessing of fire for illumination and warmth. it is as much about heat as it is about light - with light comes insight, clarity of thought and revelations, and with heat comes transformation (phoenix fire), thus it also represents how one has harnessed forces and energies greater than themselves. a fitting end for the child of light. it’s also interesting to note that kenaz is associated with a teacher/student dynamic - scathatch definitely taught him this and he thought to use it in his last moments. he was done for and thus used the light, or illumination, he had left to take out evil with him.

tldr; cú’s favourite runes seem to be kenaz (fire) and ansuz (intelligence, leadership, power of words & is also strongly linked to the norse god odin).
