Front Cover

I’ve finally completed the final design of the from cover for my booklet. It uses:

A green gradient

Nature silhouettes with varied opacities

A black silhouette

A linear gradient shadow for each silhouette

Primary Research 4

To conclude my primary research I decided to follow the advice that was given to me, to observe myself.

I found it difficult to do because I I could only go by what I think of myself and what others think of me and how I’ve been described in the past.

I deemed it useless to ask my family as they are automatically bias and kept giving me the positive side of my personality and not a balanced opinion/reflection of my personality.

Primary Research 3

UPDATE:

So before I said “I had to think about who people were which isn’t something I normally do.”

It was hard but not as hard as I thought. Until, my last person that I had to observe.

She comes across as being quite different to the other girls that I observed. The others came across as being introverts.

However after observation, it came across that she fakes being an extrovert, in a way it could be considered as a protective mechanism. As if without this facade, she would simply fall apart.

I know  that finding an element of nature to fit this person’s personality will be quite hard.

Possibly a pomegranate may be ideal as without the outside, all the arils would be all over the place. With the skin it is all held together

Raw Portraits

So most of the portraits for my project are done I just need to do 3 more. I changed my mind when photographing the models. This is because I felt that the lighting looked better with the images being taken from an angle.

I like the lighting in the image above. It uses natural daylight and reflectors. I liked the simplicity of the set up because I was able to get some really nice work done.

Mimi’s Nature

I never really understood how much work goes into making a photo look beautiful. 

When taking this photo the arrangement and lighting of the very smallest details is crucial. This is something that I learnt with this dandelion.

This is the set up I ended up using to capture this image . I had to make a makeshift lighting and background set up for this image to work.

I printed out the images and decided that I works best on semi gloss satin paper.

Another Group Tutorial

I had another group tutorial with to discuss where I’m at with my project and how I plan on presenting my work for the exhibition.

We discussed the problem which I had of trying to book a space for the portraits to be shot. We managed to work around the the problem by creating a usable space.

We talked about how i was planing on binding the whole thing together and what type of paper I would be printing on. I will need to go to the digital print room over at Parkside to resolve this issue.

A suggestion was made that I included myself on to the last page of my project. I’ve experimented with this suggestion and have found that it throws the layout off. To correct this I will need to include another person otherwise the middle pages will need to be stuck together.

Another solution would be to print the pages on single pages and then bind them together in a similar style as the Japanese stab bind technique.

Final Cover Design

This is the final cover design for my project.

I used a green gradient for the background

A dark silhouette in the foreground

Silhouette’s of nature

The shadows of each silhouette are all the same colour with varied opacities

There is no title because without one there it makes the cover more impactful and interesting.

Final Internal Design

So here’s the plan of the internal of the publication.

On all of the left hand pages there will be portraits.

On all of the right hand pages there will be an element of nature to represent the personality of each portrait.

The publication will be A5 sized

As I want there to be a white space around the images, I plan to print each image at 10x15cm.

There are a few ideas which I am still toying with. These are:

Having the person’s name under the the nature image?

Having a brief description of the personality under the portrait?

Possibly having page numbers?

These are things that I need to talk to someone about. I think that if I get a fresh perspective on my project it would be more beneficial to my work.

Progression to the Final Idea

My progression started with trying to work out the layout of the publication. No matter how hard I seem to try, I keep hitting some form of problem. I think I need to rethink the chosen layout and/or talk to someone about the layout settings.

I then decided to start working on the front cover but thinking about the basics of what I thought the cover needed. I.e background colour, graphics (imagery) and a title.

I couldn’t get the right typography to work with the title. No matter how I tried I just couldn’t get the text to work. I tried to change the juxtaposition to see if it would tie it all together in a better way. It didn’t.

In the end I decided to remove all the text on the front cover and to play with the opacity of the graphics to make the silhouettes look more interesting.

I continued to experiment with shades of green for the background of the front cover. I also worked on the back cover which is still a work in progress at this point. I chose the colour green as colour theory suggest that green represents :

The Earth and etc...

I took into consideration that the orientation of the pages could be what is causing the problems which I am facing. So I’ve tested the the  Idea of having everything landscape instead of portrait. I don’t think that it looks right on the front cover as there is a lot of empty space.

I also played around with the composition for the cover to experiment to see if there was anything that was worth using.

I also changed the shapes of the silhouettes to see of I could get them to relate to the young women which were used on the inside.

Experiment - Tones

Edward Weston’s work made me consider maybe making my own work in complete black and white.

I think it may possibly look like work that has already been doe before so maybe I could do a mix of the two or just completely in colour.

Secondary Research 7

Edward Weston - Book of Nudes

American Photographer.

He kept journals which he called “Daybooks”.

Really successful working with soft-focus, pictorial style.

Book of nudes gave me a lot of ideas for the nature side of my project.

Alfred Stieglitz - Camera Works

A visual publications make up of works by various practitioners.

Mostly black and white images or sepia images

They vary from landscapes and portraits to very contemporary images.

Workshops

When the VIS3003 module was launched we were told that engagement to the course/module would be apart of the final grade.

One way that I decided to do this was by going to workshops.

By going to workshops I am able to develop new skills and improve on ones which I already have.

I am continuously trying to find new ways of trying new things. I need to also see how I can engage more with the course.

Primary Research 2

I continued my primary research of people observing by looking in to four different things which would be relevant to my project.

For each person I looked into I took into consideration what their personality and nature representation was and what pose and lighting would help to portray this.

I found that doing this task was harder than I thought it was. This is because I had to think about who people were which isn’t something I normally do.

This morning I had a group tutorial with Joe and some of my peers. They gave me a few suggestions and pointers on how I can improve my work.

I liked doing this because it meant that I had some help getting past the creative block that I had.

The group also gave me suggestions for how I should ask the models pose and the possible lighting I can use.
