the separations are key. daemon gave her the cruel gift of ten years to try to become her own person and it sort of worked. (i spared you, you were a child). then he kind of tries to become his own and the whole thing is actually about making him accept it’s doomed, that his self is hers. i could not [leave you], i have tried!

after seeing laenor this episode on seasmoke having the time of his life and being an active and equal participant in the war council at the age of seventeen i feel like it’s something that is very overlooked in analysis of his character. we get a glimpse of him in 1.01 when he’s 13-14, and the next time we see him he is an enthusiastic and effective participant in a war. corlys really had his fourteen year old son burn men alive to further his war effort for three years. and when we see the effects of that post time skip leanor is having a great time! he is living rhaenyra’s dream (which was denied to her on the basis of her sex), but it seems to have been so influential in his development that he doesn’t feel that he has the capacity to be anything but a soldier.

this is also an interesting example of the running theme of someone with immense power (usually a close relative) doing something that derails and forever changes the life of a character when they’re fourteen. for rhaenyra it’s aemma’s murder and being named heir, for alicent it’s her father pushing her on viserys with viserys happily obliging, for aegon it’s his engagement to helaena which puts him on the dangerous path of being a more serious threat by having heirs, and for dyanna it’s being raped by aegon.

helaena and aemond diverge from this pattern, and they twin with it too, with aegon having had dubious sexual encounters with them when they were both thirteen (maritally and by proxy respectively).
