They have glasses, dark sweaters and are introverted -- but they don't like to talk about it!
As part of The London Book fair, Latvia has launched a campaign #iamintrovert to highlight the rich and colourful inner world of otherwise introverted and quiet Latvian writers. So watch out for those Latvian writers sneaking around the darkest corners, trying to avoid any conversation ! :D

The Cross Birch (and pine)
Cutting a cross on a tree is a custom connected to “veļi” or spirits of the dead in the Latvian mythology. This custom has only been observed in northern and mid-Vidzeme.
Liezēre is one of the rare places where the tradition has been preserved until nowadays. It is a unique blend of pagan and Christian beliefs. On its way to a cemetery a funeral procession stops for a while at a roadside tree and a cross is cut in its bark.
Here, on the Sīļi Burial mound, once grew one of 34 Cross Birches of Latvia. The birch broke in 2003, and at this moment a fragment of its trunk is displayed in the Madona Heritage and Art Museum. After the cross birch was broken, the tradition was continued and crosses cut in the pine nearby.

So my foreigner friend just learned about our dance and sing festivals… this was the result…
“Latvia is why the aliens stopped visiting” haha that’s one way to look at it.
https://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/XXV_Visp%C4%81r%C4%93jie_latvie%C5%A1u_Dziesmu_un_XV_Deju_sv%C4%93tki: “Svētkos piedalījās 40 600 dalībnieki no 603 deju kolektīviem, 388 koriem un 224 vokālajiem ansambļiem un tos apmeklēja ap 500 000 skatītāju. Deju lieluzvedumā “Tēvu laipas” piedalījās 14 764 dejotāji. Noslēguma koncertā Mežaparkā piedalījās apmēram 15 400 dziedātāji, 700 dejotāji un 1200 pūtēju orķestru mūziķi.”
4 000 ain’t the most we’ve had. Almost 15 000 dancers? The work everyone puts into this celebration is insane.
