In Victorian floriography, chamomile symbolizes “strength in adversity,” which feels like a good sentiment for these days. Happy Black History Month! Last night, I had the chance to listen to @eve.ewing speak, and one thing she spoke about was the nature of history. Whose stories aren’t being told? How is that invisibility affecting the way our society operates? This is the difficult aspect of history: that we must seek out the things we cannot see (or rather the things that have been made invisible to us). Growing up, I thought history was combining stories to create one coherent narrative about the past. Instead, what I’m beginning to understand that history is more about the present and understanding how we’ve arrived at this moment and place. It’s more complex than one narrative, and we should resist the impulse to believe that it is simple. We should embrace nuance and complexity, even when it means facing ugly truths about our country’s past. Reckoning with these histories we’ve inherited (and more importantly the present) is the beginning of crafting a more just and harmonious future. As a non-Black POC ally, I want to strive to find ways to show up and show solidarity - to dismantle systems of anti-Black oppression in this country. #blackhistorymonth #blacklivesmatter
