BASILISK

Beware the basilisk unless, of course you are carrying a weasel in a cage. Without such protection the beast can slay you in unpleasant ways. It is the evil eye made manifest, capable of ‘looking anyone dead’. The range of the monsters fiery glance is so far-reached that it can make a lark flying past plummet from the air into its gaping mouth. Where the monster roams is said to become the bleakest of deserts. Nothing survives, for its visual venom blackens grass, rots the fruits of the earth and even splits rocks. Where the basilisk simply happens by, water turns toxic.

Sometimes called a cockatrice, the basilisk has the body of a large snake with the head and legs of a cock, wide thorny wings and a tail ending in a hook or arrow point. Two stories prevail about the birth of the sinister creature. One tells it sprang from a round yolk less egg laid by a seven-year-old rooster and hatched by a toad. The other reveals that the basilisk is the offspring of Gorgon Medusa, whose glance turned the living into stone.

The Basilisks stare was so potent that a hunter raising a spear to the beast was slain as the poison flowed up the weapon and into the man’s heart - also killing the horse which he was mounted.

The monsters name derives from the Greek term meaning ‘little king’ for the ancients regarded the basilisk as the king of serpents. The creatures origin aspect sprang from that of a cobra-like snake, and over time the image of the crest on the head evolved into a cockscomb, perceived in legend as a crown. But through all its evolutions the basilisk’s nature has always been considered dire.

You may be wondering about the weasel. The ancient warning actually refers to the mongoose, a fierce little ferret notable in India for its aptitude in killing cobras. It performs the same service with basilisk, for on spotting a mongoose the basilisk turns its tail and runs off. Should a mongoose not be handy when you encounter a basilisk, a mirror offers equal protection- if the creature sees its own image, it dies of fright, 

In the 17th century, literal belief in the monster began to wane. The Spanish poet Quevedo wrote the beautifully logical, beautifully mocking lines about the basilisk: ‘If the man who saw you is still alive, your whole story is a lie, since he has not dies he cannot have seen you, and if he has died, he cannot tell what he saw’
