Sometimes I feel like Mozart is the only composer with any sense of LIFE and HOW TO USE IT.
my neighbor totoro (1988)// spirited away (2001)// princess mononoke (1997)
I wasnât asked to a single dance in high school and didnât have a serious romantic relationship until I was 22. And like, yeah that shit hurt when I was younger. I had a lot of fears that I was unlovable and that I didnât deserve to be happy. And every time I would try to talk to anyone about it, the conversation became, âyouâll find someoneâ, when it should have been, âyou donât need a relationship or a date, youâre lovable & complete & beautiful on your ownâ.
So yeah, please normalize young people not dating, and please stop shaming them for it. Thereâs more to life than romance, despite what the media wants us to think.
Ohhhh boy, alright. Here we go.Â
So, my aunt is going to die any day now.Â
I donât believe itâs insensitive to say, since itâs the gd truth. My parents went to visit her across the country and their visit was basically a âgoodbyeâ without explicitly telling her. (Unfortunately I wasnât able to accompany them, since I donât get many days off with my job.)
ANYWAY - Iâve been thinking about her a lot lately. She is not married⌠and never has been. She will most likely never reach the age of 60 due to cancer and has never been in any sort of serious relationship in her entire 58 years of life.
The thing is, I think we all know someone who never âfoundâ anyone - who wasnât ever in anything serious enough to last long. The problem with people telling you not to worry because âyouâll find someone,â is that not only is it problematic for several reasons, but itâs also the opposite of comforting, since we all know someone like my aunt. âYouâll find someone,â has proven to be false time and time again to me through real life examples of other people. NOT EVERYONE FINDS IT. THATâS JUST THE GD TRUTH. And thatâs become scary shit to me in my adult years, since my whole life I was led to believe it just eventually HAPPENS to everyone. I used to spend every day in college EXPECTING IT to happen and sometimes I still do. I am slowly teaching myself to become more comfortable with the idea of living a single lifestyle⌠but itâs taken a lot of work and grief.
Please let people know (especially single women) that they do not need a relationship or a date. Please normalize people living happy, single lives⌠and I donât just mean young people. Normalize singleness as a LIFESTYLE not to be treated as unusual or equated to âunwanted/unlovable.â My aunt is DAMN LOVABLE and Iâm sorry she has to go. Everyone around her knows that she is lovable & complete & beautiful on her own, but the most important thing is that she knows. I wish other people would as well.

ALICE ROOSEVELT WAS HARDCORE. âShe was known as a rule-breaker in an era when women were under great pressure to conform. The American public noticed many of her exploits. She smoked cigarettes in public, swore at officials, rode in cars with men, stayed out late partying, kept a pet snake named Emily Spinach (Emily as in her spinster aunt and Spinach for its green color) in the White House, and was seen placing bets with a bookie.Â
So what Iâm reading here is, she was a Roosevelt?
Well I have a new hero.
Her whole wikipedia article is gold
âWhen her father was governor of New York, he and his wife proposed that Alice attend a conservative school for girls in New York City. Pulling out all the stops, Alice wrote, âIf you send me I will humiliate you. I will do something that will shame you. I tell you I will.ââ
âHer father took office in 1901 following the assassination of President William McKinley, Jr. in Buffalo (an event that she greeted with âsheer rapture.â)â
âDuring the cruise to Japan, Alice jumped into the shipâs pool fully clothed, and coaxed a congressman to join her in the water. (Years later Bobby Kennedy would chide her about the incident, saying it was outrageous for the time, to which the by-then-octogenarian Alice replied that it would only have been outrageous had she removed her clothes.â
âShe was dressed in a blue wedding dress and dramatically cut the wedding cake with a sword (borrowed from a military aide attending the reception)â
âWhen it came time for the Roosevelt family to move out of the White House, Alice buried a Voodoo doll of the new First Lady, Nellie Taft, in the front yard.â
âLater, the Taft White House banned her from her former residenceâthe first but not the last administration to do so. During Woodrow Wilsonâs administration (from which she was banned in 1916 for a bawdy joke at Wilsonâs expense)âŚâ
âAs an example of her attitudes on race, in 1965 her African-American chauffeur and one of her best friends, Turner, was driving Alice to an appointment. During the trip, he pulled out in front of a taxi, and the driver got out and demanded to know of him, âWhat do you think youâre doing, you black bastard?â Turner took the insult calmly, but Alice did not and told the taxi driver, âHeâs taking me to my destination, you white son of a bitch!â
âTo Senator Joseph McCarthy, who had jokingly remarked at a party âHereâs my blind date. I am going to call you Aliceâ, she sarcastically said âSenator McCarthy, you are not going to call me Alice. The trashman and the policeman on my block call me Alice, but you may not.â
I love this woman.
WOMEN WHO NEED FUCKEN MOVIES.
This is Alice as an older lady. The pillow says âIf you canât say something good about someone, sit right here by me.âÂ
She is my absolute favorite.Â
This is great! Iâd love a film about her.
also, fun fact: according to her Memoir âCrowded Hoursâ, Alice suspected âfoul playâ when she found Emily Spinach dead on the roof beside her quarters in the home of someone Alice had been visiting, whose âunfortunate hosts regarded Emily with mute protestâ
