oh, hello? bit of an update! still stressin’ over exams & uni applications but might start, i dont know, re-organising some things here. dusting off dags and all, re-coding some stuff.
berserk’s place is on the lewis && harris island of the alban hebrides; it’s large enough to comfortably hold a bewilderbeast in it’s caverns, and is split between lewis ( north side ) and harris ( south side ) which plays into the size of the tribe being split between settlements around the isle.
d.agur’s mother is a norse-gael, from Íl of the inner hebrides, and who he inherited his red hair and hawk nose from. she was offered to osvald as a peace-weaver, a political marriage in exchange for peace, though neither are in love with the other. they agreed to a child as a means of acknowledging their alliance but little more.
as a result of his mothers norse-gael roots, d.agur can speak some amount of old gaelic, though not exceptionally fluently. he could get by, barely, but wouldn’t be able to hold a conversation past a set point.
dag’s early perception of his father is based on information he can gleam from bardic stories in the main village hall, and it’s this idyllic image he constructs in his head that he models his early behavior on in order to gain his fathers’ attention && pride; it’s also a means for him to try and fit into the tribe better seeing as how his hair && norse-gael roots make him a bit of an outsider.
I EXIST. WITH ( OR ) WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION
— I EXIST.
d.agur && arguably some of the elders of the tribe have lichtenberg burns on their skin from contact with lightning, either through naturally being struck or contact with skrill. d.agur’s most prominent is the palms of his hands, which have faded with time.

community holidays:
jol / yuletide ; midwinter celebration to celebrate the return of baldur from the realm of hel, loosening winters grip on earth. lasts for 12 days, begins on the sunset of the winter solstice. first night is referred to as mothernight, where frigga and the disir are honoured as it represents the rebirth of the world from the darkness of winter. a traditional vigil is held from dusk to dawn on mothernight to welcome the sun when she returns. a time for dancing, feasting and family ; sun wheels are burnt and oaths are sworn over a hallowed boar. fir trees are brought inside and decorated with straw or wooden carved ornaments and ribbon and a ‘yule log’ is burnt ( it is intended to burn all night during the longest night of the year to symbolize life lasting even in times of great darkness and it’s fire rekindling the sun in the morning ) -- it’s ash can be used in protective amulets for the rest of the year. ( 6th of mörsugur / 20th of december. )
disablot / disting ; a feast and fair in preparation for the working months ahead, also the day the first furrows are ploughed in the fields. held on the first new moon of february ( þorri. )
ostara / summer finding ; feast marking the beginning of summer, named for the goddess ostara. celebration of the rejuvenation of the earth, fertility & growth. traditional decorations include budding boughs, flowers, decorated eggs and rabbit motifs ( the ‘easter hare’ was the holy beast of ostara ). fires are also kindled on hilltops at dawn, and plays are held in which summer battles with winter and eventually drives him out, or an effigy of winter is beaten, burned or drowned. held near the spring equinox ( 7th of einmánuður, 21st of march. )
valpurgis / may eve ; a day for fertility celebrations, in which bonfires are lit and children collect greens and branches from the woods at twilight, with the expected reward being eggs ( symbols of fertility ). it is also tradition to sing spring songs and for a procession of the ‘maypole’ or ‘may tree’. a fire is also kindled on grave mounds and hills, and it is traditional for folk to leap through the flames for luck ; the fires would be kindled by friction to protect cattle against illness. ( 16th of gaukmánuður night to 17th of gaukmánuður morning / april 30th night to may 1st morning. )
midsumarblot / midsummer ; bonfires, speeches, songs and dancing are traditional celebrations including the kindling of fires, making of wreaths, the burning of corn ‘dollies’ ( human figures made of straw ). also tradition for model pyre ships made of thin wood to be filled with small flammable offering and burned in lakes. the time of year to make blessings to baldur. since crops are safely planted at this time, it is also the point of the year where sailing is most prominent. held near the summer solstice ( 8th of sólmánuður / 21st of june. )
freysblot / freyfeast ; a thanksgiving feast for bread, symbolizing first fruits of harvest. baked figures of the god feyr, are created, then symbolically sacrificed and eaten. first sheafs are bound and offered to the spirits of the field in thanks and the tradition is to decorate the wells and springs of the area. also marks the return of warriors who had set off at the end of the planting season , ready to reap the crops that had grown in their absence. ( 19th of heyannir / 1st of august. )
haustblot / fallfeast ; the celebration of the beginning of autumn. traditionally, a time for bonfires, feasting and dancing as well as the casting of slaughtered cattle bones onto the flames; whilst the bonfire blazed, all other fires would be extinguished and families would then light their hearths from the common flame thus bonding the families of the tribe together. also marks the beginning of food gathering for the long winter months ahead. a time to be thankful for the harvest. held near the autumn equinox ( 6th of haustmánuður / 21st of september. )
vetrnætr / winter nights ; marks the end of the harvest, and a time for animals not expected ( or able to afford ) to make it through the winter are butchered and stored ( the more of the flock culled, the more shameful it is to be unable to afford them through winter ). a time for honoring ancestral spirits, the spirits of the land, the vanir and the powers of fruitfulness, wisdom and death. also marks the turning of the year from summer to winter. tradition states the woman of the family wold leave a ‘last sheaf’ in the fields as an offering to odin and his host of the dead; it is also the point in time that the wild hunt begins to ride, and the vetrnætr feast is seen as a time to celebrate kinship and friendship with the living and ancestors. marks the beginning of the long dark wintertime at which old tales are told and great deeds are toasted; a time to think of accomplishments achieved and those yet to be made. also marks the beginning of a time for indoor work, thought and craftmenship. ( 29th of haustmánuður / 31st of october. )
other holidays:
feast of the eimherjar ; a feast is held in remembrance for the fallen heroes in valhalla, and other halls of the gods & godesses. ( 29th of gormánuður / 11th of november. )
BERSERKER ISLE HC’S!
members of the tribe become legal adults at 12, though they take the initiation into adulthood at around 15-16 with the slaying of their first dragon, and completion of their training to become self-sufficient. ( nowadays, killing a dragon isn’t required; rather, they must bond with a dragon instead )
it is usually the same-sex parents duty to teach their child self-sufficiency ( hunting, trapping, skinning, fishing, some aspects of navigation, how to make camp, how to start a small farm, e.t.c )
the tribe is actually divided into smaller sections, of which d.agur is the “high chief” to -- this is because the tribe is one of the largest in the barbaric archipelago and it makes it easier to delegate.
the isle’s history is steeped in blood & war, and a deep, deep reverent respect for the skrill; there is a celebration every year of a week-long feast that honors felled warriors of old, and the skrill who protected the tribe ‘till their last breathes, held in the run-up to vetrnætr ( 29th of haustmánuður / 31st of october. ) -- unsurprisingly, this was d.agur’s favourite holiday as a child, as it was a joyous occasion where legends, tales and stories were told to keep the memory of ancestor’s alive and to call the wild hunt inside to join them.
SHATTERMASTER.
when shattermaster gets shot down, d.agur isn’t able to properly assess the damage until later, out of harms way but even then he knew it wasn’t transient, temporary; the gronckle isn’t too worse for wear except for the extensive damage to his right wing, preventing the dragon from flying long distances, and certainly not with a rider. as a result, d.agur retires shattermaster to the cliff-stables where he frequently visits the gronckle, and instead takes on the triple stryke ( sleuther ) as his riding dragon.
it’s a shaky transition, for he had truly bonded with the gronckle in their short time together, and he’s sure to spoil the thing rotten when he can, but as chief ( and someone trying to be better, to help ) he needs to be able to cover ground quickly ( important when also considering the search for their father alongside h.eather ) and the triple stryke is an interesting creature; it’s faster but is prone to the weaknesses of most non-gronckle dragons; dragon root, and it’s armor isn’t as dense, nor can it create material to work with but he comes to respect the dragon regardless; besides, those tails are cool.
self-loathing, do you mean
starvation
do you mean a hunger to eat yourself out of yourself
do you mean to feast, and devour, and gorge on things unrightfully yours
and to feel all the emptier for it?
