A bad idea written down is far better and far more useful to you than a blank sheet of paper and a mythical piece of brilliance that has been stuck in your head out of fear of failure. Go ahead and fail. Then make it better.
My screenwriting prof.
I felt like a lot of people needed to hear this. Including myself.

tfw you’re writing and your fic is turning into something you didn’t intend it to be
tfw you’re writing and a character says something you didn’t expect them to say and it sort of opens up a new plot point you’re going to have to resolve now by the end of the fic
how do you get the confidence to write?
you don’t. i don’t think anyone really ever does, and i don’t think it’s an on-and-off switch that you have much control over.
i think that’s why writing is so hard.
i know this sounds pessimistic, but i think your confidence is tested all the time in writing — whether that's
just simply trusting that your ideas are “good” enough to even be thought about
asking if you have enough time/motivation/energy to get it done
first getting down the words on the paper
continuing to keep writing those words on the paper until you’re done
editing those very words that you wrote (or asking someone to do so)
posting the entire actual thing up somewhere online
handling the reception of it
and continuing to write after that entire aftermath
every time you “write,” you break through that. and you know what? it gets easier with time.

but imagine, really imagine your OTP….
leaning their foreheads together, completely out of breath after a long kiss
waking up together after their first time
as grandparents
holding hands romantically for the first time
falling asleep on the couch
staring at each other from across the room like the lovestruck idiots they are
meeting again after being separated for a year
being incrediblybly, absolutely, blissfully happy
Person B making a deal to save Person A’s life at the cost of all their memories together.

Do you think that writing fanfiction is a waste of time?
Not in the slightest bit.
~*~appreciation~*~
Okay SO apparently today is “cry in public about how awesome your writer-friends are” day? Like, this is a thing and it’s wonderful. I’m sure I’ll have forgotten somebody because my brain is so tired rn, but here are some tumblr-peeps who have been just absolutely fantastic (and who are rad talented!!!) and I’ve been so blessed to have them in my life in the three years I’ve been on this site.
@sohhng – Shannon was my first fandom friend and it was so totally shocking because I’d spent hours reading her old fic blog and then after I joined tumblr she followed me and we started talking and it was just??? Incredible. She is so sweet and so supportive on so many levels even though our writing and our lives are so different. And like, WOW is she talented. Shannon crafts words with such precision and emotion and pulls in details that make her stories so authentic and it’s such a joy to read her work. It transports you into the worlds she creates and expands, truly.
@elidyce – Okay wow. So. We literally met in that Mulan sort of way (“I see you have a sword. I have one, too. They’ve very manly and…tough.”)—I think she may have been the one who sent the first message of contact, but I jumped on that like, “Oh my, I read Stealing from Pirates and it was so! good! and I see in your end note that you have a spouse and offspring; I have a spouse and offspring, too, and we both ship Zutara and we should be friends!” Very manly and tough. ;) But seriously, Dyce is just the sweetest and most encouraging person. She’s so kind and understanding and just…wow. Messages from Dyce are like the highlights of my day when they come. And!!! Talented!!! Oh my goodness! She just, like, creates such full worlds and expands on characters in such a mature and realistic way and reading her work feels like such a treat. She treats her characters with so much care and she’s an inspiration, for real.
@stellatiate – Elle Elle Elle. I don’t know if I ever told you, but I totally stalked your old writing blog, too, before I joined Tumblr. And her writing was part of what inspired me to join, because I wanted in on that fandom community. And it’s been so great getting to know her and talking to her and just having that familiarity of being able to like her work (because oh my goodness, she crafts words so well) and leave replies on her posts and just I am so glad to have her in my life. Her stories are always inspirational—she uses language with such poetic flow that it makes me want to cry. She also isn’t afraid of the angst, which makes my heart hurt in the best ways alongside her happier fics. I get so happy when I see her writing on my dash.
@vaelys – Sweet moonfish! Yin/Nila/Moonfish is just such a wonderful person. We joined Tumblr at around the same time so we were newbies together and her writing is just spot on. It’s been so much fun getting to know her and seeing her grow and enjoying fandom together. Atla + Parks and Rec + Mulan for the win!! And her writing is so fun to read—she’s got such a great balance of emotion and commentary and it’s so wonderful to get swept up in her words.
Other people I have interacted with on a much lesser scale but whose writing I admire so, so much are @socksssss, @shamelessliarkickapow, @sharkflip, and @sadladybug.
To the people on this list and to everyone else who makes such amazing contributions to fandom—THANK YOU so much for everything you do. It’s wonderful to see the fandom continue to grow and to see our beloved characters go on so many adventures, fall in love so many different ways, and live so many different aspects of life together.
I <3 u friends. :)
