I just figured out a thing.

I’d been really annoyed that The Punisher felt the need to basically retell Frank’s origin even tho Daredevil season 2 had pretty much covered it, until I realised that it makes way more sense in Punisher s1.

Basically, you have two guys. Both are career military, closer than brothers, and USMC to their bones. They both experience the same situation–being assigned as muscle in a covert operation that even before they find out it’s off-the-books is morally dodgey as FUCK. And their reactions are diametric opposites.

One rejects it and tries to return to his family and tell himself the lie that he was only following orders while still knowing in his gut it was fucked up. The other one leans into it, protects it, gets rich off it,  while still knowing in his gut it was fucked up but not caring.

And when both of them get stripped down to who they really are by the events that result from their choices, Frank stands up and says “This shit was fucked up” and does what he can to make it right while still owning his own shitty choices and the fact that he knew it was wrong and did nothing. He went in knowing there was no escape route, because he wanted to make up for what he’d done in any way he could. While Billy made the exact opposite choice–lying to himself right up to the bitter end.

Frank Castle is not a hero. He’s not an anti-hero. He’s a protagonist, in a way that the MCU hasn’t really done before. And that’s why he clicks for me, the same way that Karen Page clicks with me. Their stories aren’t necessarily about redemption because they feel they can never actually be redeemed. Nothing will ever erase what they’ve done, or make it right. It’s about people making the right choice because they once made the wrong choice, and then living with that. Every single day.

I love my capes with their superpowers, don’t get me wrong. But I love characters who risk what they have while having so much more to lose so much more sometimes. Because they may live in a world with aliens and magic Norse aliens and giant robots and shit, but their stories are more relatable to me because they’re told in shades of grey on a human scale.

Frank Castle: appears out of no where parkouring over a coffee table to take SEVERAL bullets to the chest diving in front of Karen . Running down flights and flights of stairs injuried. Got shot in the head. Blood dripping down his face. Dislocates his shoulder. Get blown up all the while having the police wanting to put a bullet in his ass.
