|| Lyanna & Religion | Part 1: Churches
Though each year, each death, each horrible event has chipped away at her belief overall, Lyanna can’t help but refer to “God” when talking about something bigger than herself. Her upbringing was entirely Protestant, as the Puritans did not believe in the Catholic viewing of Christianity. As such, her teachings always revolved around the Bible being the only truth, and being entirely literal. She grew up believing that all sin was equal, even the smallest infraction could cause damnation. It still clings to her, eats at her when she’s done something heinous. And finally, she was taught that the path to salvation was faith alone.
Well, seeing as salvation has never come, it’s been hard to reconcile what was really her entire world for her formative years with everything that she has experienced since.
She wants to stay away, and she wants to shirk off the wretched guilt of faith that sits deep within her, but whenever she passes a Church, she cannot help herself. If she is truly in a low place, or finding herself full of doubt, she will go inside when it is empty and sit, and take in the smell of the candles and the books and the must. Churches are a great way to humble herself, calm her, force her to question her actions.
At times, when she had no place to sleep for the night, churches had been a great escape from the harsher elements. More than once she has slept soundly on a hard wooden church pew in the dead of a New England winter. There is something calming, the ever present feeling of being watched over and protected.
Even if she tells herself she does not believe in a higher power, deep down she cannot shake what she was raised to believe.

❛ &. ┊ “ You really think a homemade brownie’s gonna make up for ruining my Jenny Peckham dress? ” The frown remains on pale features for a tormentingly long moment before the corners of a mouth curl upwards slowly, gradually, until the smile becomes evident. Of course can’t she be angry with Lyanna for much longer than five minutes – certainly not an entire week. But alas… life’s so much more worth living if at least some moments are spent jokingly teasing a friend. “ Are they made with an extra big amount of peanut butter? ”

Immortals can be prone to self-doubt too, and for a moment Lyanna is unsure a peanut butter brownie really was the best way of apologizing. But the slow encroaching smile slowly melts the chill away that had kept her so perfectly still. “Of course they are,” Lyanna hums back, a smile to match Moa’s growing rapidly across her features. “I mean, what kind of apology brownie would it be without it?” Padding over, barefoot against the cool ground, she offered the brownie to Moa. “You know, I used to scoff at the idea of witches being the homebody, or the magical caretaker, but really it’s the most accurate depiction that’s ever been portrayed.” A pause, and then, with a wink, she adds slyly, “Well, that and the gossiping.”

“i don’t care,” i say, caringly, as i care deeply
EASTERN RUSSIA. 2098 AD. EARLY AFTERNOON.
❛ &. ┊ It certainly appears at times that human evolution and human decadence exhibits exponential growth; there is no linearity in the way that destruction spreads across the globe, no rational reasoning behind human ignorance of its own responsibility. With change come threats and perhaps is the most worrisome the repetitive outbreaks of diseases that should have remained locked underneath layers and layers of permafrost. She hasn’t touched her badge in several decades, attempted briefly to aid the fight against lethal illnesses until that, too, became a battle too costly in resources and with a hardly reachable goal. The rich still feast on whatever goods are still accessible to the top few percentages, all others dream of a past where the cleft between the poor and the wealthy was perceptible but not overwhelming. She’s given up her homes, sold whatever property she owned as safehouses in the cases of emergency – but what for? A species realising the rough and inexorable approach of their own extinction?
Arm readjusts the weight of the rifle strapped to her back, feet eerily silent as they ghost across a leaf-covered forest floor. Somewhere in midst of larches and pines lies a small hut, giving the impression of a hunter’s den – but she isn’t a hunter and the weapon she carries, she carries mostly for intimidation. A wooden door falls shut behind her before hands instinctively reach for the apple generously placed on a countertop. The apocalypse. Fantastical thinkers would have liked it to be a little more surreal; the dead rising, the skies reddening… and yet comes it in the shape of growing deserts, global outbreaks, increasing poverty, and politicians pointing fingers at each other now that the point of no return has been surpassed.
“ Moa! ” Features hardly shift when a familiar voice calls out from the small backyard that lies adjacent to the one-room housing. He’s barely aged, yet it’s not one of her own achievements. Her sired still are out there somewhere, living life as mundanely as is possible so shortly before the storm – but he, he is not one of them. His grin stretches from one ear to another when he enters the hut, black hair a complete mess of sweaty strands and hands wiping away the dirt of tending to the small garden they call their own when he announces amusedly, “ You’re right on time. I need to get back to the city and there’s been a friend of yours who wanted to talk to you. She’s outside. ”
❛ &. ┊ A friend. The gods know, she hasn’t heard that term used in quite a while. The world nowadays is no place to prosper friendships in rather than acquaintances out of necessity. And so furrow brows expressively when she follows the direction Willem points her at, jaw tense and eyes squinting when she realises who is reaching out her arm to nick herself a ripe fig. “ Lyanna? ” It’s a name she’s thought she’d never utter again but now that she recognises the light strands of hair… seems heart even more bitter about it. She was hard before, has hardened more still, and as much as mind curses the mere thought of it, is there a brief moment in which she wishes she hadn’t returned. “ I hope you didn’t come all the way to Krasnojarsk to admire my capability to grow figs in the Siberian taiga. ” It’s meant as a joke but lacks it the punch line – and the friendliness on her own features.

There are... preparations to be made. For the end. Their end. Her end. All of it. A disease she had come to know could not be overcome by her alone. For all her power, her connection to the Earth, all the prowess she had spent years cultivating... what was it in the face of greed in perpetuum? Every tree was grown to be cut down, as it were. And she had long since given up trying. Let it burn. She was ready to rest.
As much as the thought of her eternal demise brought worry and sickness in her heart the likes of which rendered her incapable of escaping her bed, she did not want to go alone. Or, at least, not without having said her goodbyes. She and Karmichael had discussed it in length one wintry night decades before the destruction had truly become irreversible. She would go to her friends, and he to his --whoever happened to be left at the time-- to spend their last years in the company that had kept them going for so long.
Because without all those people, what had stopped her from trying to see her mother again the moment she knew she could?
Some of them were old. Some were on their death beds when she came by. Some had grown and now had families, with little children that were so delighted to meet “the witchlet”. Children she had to close her heart to, or else she might stay just to see them grow. Some of them were gone. Some of them were underground and unreachable. She had thought Moa to be one of those. Her houses were sold, so where was there to look next? Lyanna had scried and scried for days until her search had narrowed to a single part of Russia, and even then it took quite a bit of asking around. But here she was, her effort not gone to waste, admiring a garden in a way only a witch of the Earth could.
Head turned rapidly, caught in the act as the fig fell dully into the palm of her hand. A smile began to form, but froze upon seeing the other’s expression. Her lips parted, the words she had been prepared to say dying against her teeth. Lyanna shut her mouth, lowered her hand with the fig, and stood unsure if approaching was the right thing to do. It was what she wanted to do. What she had come all this way for. But doubt crept up her throat like a thorny vine, scraping her flesh when she thought to strain against it.
“And what if I did?” Lyanna replied, tone carefully jovial, her optimism not yet entirely worn away. “It should be admired. Growing something in spite of the waste? It’s wonderful.” Her gaze darted to the grass below her feet, felt rather than saw the scrunching of toes in her shoes, and she wished she could sink into the dirt for just a moment. “I mean, it’s not the only reason I came here. I wanted to see you. But---” Lyanna lifted her head, green eyes meeting black with concern, “---is now not a good time for you?”

Her legs were aching, breaths coming far too quick as she finally sank down onto the curb. The storekeeper had given up the last street over, returning to the bakery in a huff… most likely to call the authorities, though Mahia planned to be long gone by then.
Did she feel a pang of guilt at the wrapped pastry in her lap? Yes, of course. But, it was nothing to compared to the absolutely painful gurgling of her empty belly. While she would have much preferred catching her own meals, there hadn’t even been the stray trace of a rabbit for the last two days. And she couldn’t put off eating any longer, no matter how much she regretted this thieving.
The paper was unwrapped from around the treat, and she was just about to take a bite, when she caught sight of movement in the shadows… a sign she wasn’t nearly as alone on this seemingly empty street as she thought. “——- Hello? “
It was a surely foolish thing, calling out. She knew that. And yet… Her free hand dropped down to the hilt of her blade, fingers curling tightly around carved wood. “ Who is there? “
Their target couldn’t have gotten too far, and so she wasn’t too worried about rushing to catch up. After all, as far as she was aware, the man had only been after her, and not the belongings in her house. Yet another young hunter, sent on a silly mission to kill the unkillable. It really was quite sad. So sad, she almost didn’t hear someone call out to her from up on the street ahead. Lyanna stopped only when Karmichael took a bit of her pant leg in his mouth and tugged hard. The voice wasn’t male, but even so she hadn’t been expecting anyone to be out here. The town fair had caught everyone up several streets over.
She resumed her pace, cautious but confident that whoever the voice belonged to would not become a problem for her. And the girl that she came across was so thin, so frail looking that Lyanna became doubly confident in her assertion --despite the defensive stance the girl had taken.
“I’m not going to take your pastry, if that’s what you’re worried about,” Lyanna responded, eyebrows raised. “Any reason you’re eating on the curb alone? I mean, there are picnic tables in the park.”
As she looked over the young girl once more, the black cat at her feet slowly approached, whiskers twitching at the tension in the air. His tail swept slowly across the ground, quietly watching, waiting for an opening to come closer.
