anita watched the other girl silently as a blush colored her pale cheeks,
but a smile soon took its place. the young secretary looked about once
to make sure no one else had seen before nodding with a gentle laugh.
â we shall. â she murmured as she moved towards the door.
âSo what was all that about?â Vivian asked when they finally made it out, initially she had wanted to lash out at the girl but now the whole thing just seemed so funny, she was trying hard not to laugh.Â

the night was all you had,
you ran into the night from all you had.
found yourself a path upon the ground.
you ran into the night; you canât be found.
but this is your heart, can you feel it?
Emma sat down and wrapped her arms around her knees âI had a dream that this horrible man had a small child locked inside a room. No reason for him to do that but he simply kept telling the kid that he deserved it because of how we was born. Every time I tried to speak up it felt like was mute. I just kept hearing this child crying and screaming for help. It all felt too real.â
Emma was thankful this girl talked to her for a bit. Yes, it was super awkward to talk to someone Emma didnât know but it somehow made it better that way i would be easier to avoid them. âHonestly, just listening helps, thank you.â
Vivian listened to girlâs nightmare in silence. She couldnât imagine what it must have felt, to hear a child screaming for help and not being able to do anything. She wondered if she should give the girl a path on the back, or something, she really wasnât good at this. âHave you ever dreamed that before?âÂ
âItâs this town... I mean it seems like in every corner thereâs someone who needs help, but thereâs nothing we can do to help them... even if we want to.â
Anitaâs hands wrung together in a nervous habit she would
never readily admit to as she smiled sheepishly at the other
woman. The change in demeanor didnât go unnoticed by the
young secretary, but she had already pushed her luck this
afternoon ⊠she wasnât about to do it AGAIN. â I feel terrible
about it, truly. I must have been distracted. â
âNo one has to know...â Vivian said with a mischievous smile while carefully picking up the pieces and looking for a place to stash them. âShall we?â she asked the girl while glancing at the door, she hoped she would catch what she was trying to say.
âThatâs how it is huh? Well I hope you donât disappoint...â
âI donât usually use my days off, mainly because working is the only thing keeping from dying of boredom in this town, so that means that as long as I tell Faye in advance sheâs okay with me taking a day off... so itâs up to you handsome... when are you free?â
âIâm hoping that it will be someone Iâm familiar with honestly, but thank you. I think that will help me decide what to put in one if I decide to donate one.â
âIt depends on how one feels about a lakefront picnic. I personally believe it could be taken as either, but it would depend on who won my basket.â
âUnless you arrange it prior to it, or are you familiar with a lot of people?â
âOhh lakefront picnic, it sounds romantic, and trust me Iâm not the romantic type. You donât have to worry about whatâs on the basket, you picked a good location and you are easy to look at, whoever wins is going to enjoy it.â
âWell you really know how to make a lady feel special...â
âFive? I was only joking about sleeping for real... I canât believe I actually feel asleep in the woods... Dinner sounds great, you have a place in mind?â
âI am the executioner, all the time. This isnât a job you turn on and off, its a mindset, a constant responsibility, a constant scrutiny. This is who I am.â
âThatâs not true... you are not exactly executing anyone right now... yeah itâs true we canât forget the shit weâve done or experienced... but I donât know if anyone has ever told you before... you are more than your job.â
Well itâs not like heâs difficult to look at ... and the basket is good, right? So maybe just go for the basket. If heâs not being irritating stay, if you canât stand him just leave.Â
Thatâs what I would do. Just show up for the basket.
âI think they love my alcohol and dancers more than they love me but as long as they come out to support I really donât mind. Thank you darling, I canât take all the credit for it though, Tanya was a big help. It was mostly her idea.â
âOh congratulations! Iâm sure John has something quite exciting planned. Whatever it is Iâm sure it will be memorable. Has he told you anything about it yet?âÂ
âWho doesnât love alcohol right?â Vivian said knowing she was never going to be able to convince Faye of how the town actually felt for her, as far as Vivian was aware there wasnât a single person in town who didnât like Faye. But she knew her boss would never accept that, which in Vivianâs mind only made her more deserving of all the love she got. âTanya huh? Well Iâll be sure to say something to her later...â
âNot really, just that I should be ready for the adventure of a lifetime... should I be worried?â
Hans leaned forward and pouted, looking down at her with a smirk on his face. âIs that right, darling? I am so terribly sorry if I sound threatening to you. Do tell me, is there anything I might able to do to seem less like someone who might hurt you?â
âI was thinking some warm hot fudge which is much better licked off someone, perhaps with a kiss.â
âPerhaps if you let me look at your face more closely...â she said closing the distance between them, âor if you let me see that you donât have any weapons...â Vivian said as she pressed her palm against his chest and started to slide it down slowly.
âMmm... Iâve never tried it like that before... but where are we going to find hot fudge at this hour?â
Henry tilted his head to the side and laughed. âOh, what did you mean then?â He had always tried to make people smile and laugh. There werenât very many things in his life that he enjoyed more. When he had been given the job, he was a little shocked, after all, he wasnât as intimidated as he thought. It had been about his size and he was alright with that. Nodding, he straightened himself up and tried to get rid of the smile on his face. It felt really strange, but he was going to try and seem intimidating. As he managed to remove the smile from his face, his face was expressionless. âHow do I look? More intimidating?â Henry could only keep the expression for a moment before he laughed. âI like that. My smile is as big as me. Itâs cute. Thank you. I like that.â Her response made sense. She really did seem like she could take care of herself. Perhaps she really would be alright.
âOkay, that sounds good. Take your time, really.â Henry grinned and leaned up against the wall. âIâm doing well. Thereâs not many people here right now, so Iâm taking a little break, but Iâm keeping an eye on the door for safety.â He put his hands into his pockets. âEverything is good. The weather has been amazing and everyone here is just fun to be around.â
âThat for someone of your size you move around quietly...â she laughed, âor maybe I was just distracted...â Vivian didnât understand why every time she talked to Henry she laughed, it was as if he had some sort of magic about him that made people happy just by being near him. And just as she had finished wondering about it, there he was, just being himself and making her laugh again, âyes thatâs the oneâ she said in response to his serious face, âbut honestly as long as you stand straight to your full height people people are intimidated by you...â she said with a smile.Â
Vivian took another drag as she listened to his answer, âthe perks of a weeknight...â she said nonchalantly, âthe weekend is approaching so we should take advantage of these little breaksâ Vivian was grateful for the times the club was at full capacity, she really cared for the business, if anyone deserved to not be stressed about paying bills it was Faye. But a full club meant that when she was not on stage she had to be waiting tables, and Henry would be extra busy at the doors. âGlad to hear thatâ Vivian said in a soft voice and smiled at Henry, âso what do you need?â she asked as she put the cigarette out.Â
âSorry.â Izzy apologized. She didnât think she would end up frightening the girl, but it turned out she did. âYou think one of your clients is following you?â She raised a brow, keeping her heavy book tucked under her arm. At least if said client did show up and try something, Izzy wouldnât hesitate to brain him with her book. âAh, wellâŠI wanted to take a walk. I didnât want to be at home.â
âYeah... he apparently doesnât know the meaning of the word ânoâ ... but itâs just another day a work...â Vivian said with a slight shrug. She didnât want to dump her worries on anyone, she hated when it happened, specially not on someone she barely knew, but it was better if the girl knew what might happen. âA walk? At this time?â she raised an eyebrow, âis being home really that bad?â Vivian knew all about being miserable at home, but the moment the question left her lips she regretted asking. âNone of my business...â she tried to add quickly.Â
