THE BUBBLE (2022) dir. Judd Apatow
There was a shriek in the air that sent a chill to her very core. An interesting turn of events as she hadn’t been frightened of any of the other guests that had rolled into town that night, all they did was remind her of the never ending troubles The Big Olive had to face. However, she would know the cries of the titans anywhere and they were not creatures to be thought of lightly. She wondered for a passing moment if the once-god would be blamed for whatever wreckage they may cause, for an even briefer moment she pondered if he could have had anything to do with the matter though she knew that wasn’t possible, in his current state he didn’t have the power to break them out of their prison.
Her only thought now was to head back to her domain where she could be safe, she hoped the domain’s former king would have the same idea. She was stopped however by a river of lava that she could see at the end of the street that flowed through the intersection. “This has been a rather wacky night.” she mused to herself, now having to think of another route. “I wonder what could be next.”

A laugh spilled from his lips as he shook his head at her. She had a point; Meg was far too stubborn to ever get rid of, even if he wanted to. And he definitely didn’t want to.
Hayden continued to chuckle, feigning wiping away tears as he shook his head. “Poor bastard, if he only knew. Actually, it’s probably for the best that he doesn’t. More fun on my end to know the truth,” he said with an impish grin curling his lips. As Meg held his hand and explained the risks, his fingers flexed slightly as though he’d pull his hand away; but she didn’t seem too scared by the idea of fainting, and he’d been around enough stiffs not to be too worried by the thought of her falling over; his reflexes were quick and he should have been able to catch her if that happened. “Uh…alright. Let’s go for it then.”
The incantation was, of course, a rhyme; he shot Meg a look from under his furrowed brow—nice to see she was taking a page out of the Fates’ book on how to annoy him—before relaxing into whatever was going to happen. He hadn’t even really listened to what she was muttering, so the sudden burst of blue flame was met with a surprised “Fuck!” and instinct to jerk his hand away. Being mortal, he’d gotten used to the fact that fire was, in fact, very painful and dangerous to his health. But when there was no pain, no heat, Hayden’s stiff body relaxed and he watched the fire travel up his arm, over his head, and down the other arm.
He was stunned into silence, a rarity for the otherwise motor-mouthed man, and mesmerized by the flames flickering harmlessly across his skin. Exhaling slowly, he reached over with his free hand, letting his fingers brush through the dancing fire without a single sign of pain crossing his features. Instead, he met Meg’s gaze and gave a faint, lopsided smile at her. “Damn…you really have been learning a lot since I’ve been away, huh?”
✧༝┉┉┉┉┉˚*❋ ❋ ❋*˚┉┉┉┉┉༝✧
Her grasp on his hand tightened when his instinct to retract kicked in. She wasn’t sure if the flames would leave as soon as their contact was broken and she wanted them to last long enough for him to enjoy them. She admired him and the way that he marveled at the return of his old flame. It definitely was a strange sight to see him without the blue flames atop his head, she wanted to revel in the sight of him too. “ I had to do something to kill time. Why not learn a couple of parlor tricks?”
She gave a lopsided grin as she glanced up to see the expression on this face as he was reunited with his ‘old flame’. “And thank you for not saying anything about the incantation. I wish I could go without them but because I am mortal the spells need a little push and I was not about to argue with her about how things needed to be done.” A laugh tickled her throat.
It filled her with such delight to see the awe on his face. She couldn’t imagine how difficult things had been for him to have to adjust. No powers, having a very limited mortal body, being plucked out from the place that had been known as home for eons....she was happy to give something back to him. After a few minutes she started to slip her hands away from his, hoping that the flames would stay intact when she let go. As soon as their contact was broken she felt woozy, there was a sharp pain in her chest as if all the air had been sucked out of her lungs. Gasping accordingly she reached out to grasp his bicep to steady herself but all it did was soften her fall forward.
She gave his knee a gentle pat to let him know that she was okay. With her head on his shoulder she gave a weak grin as she cleared her throat. “I hope that helped you remember what it feels like to be a god.”

The feeling of her brushing her fingers through his hair was enough to melt his walls slightly. Hayden looked at her from the corner of his eyes, a rueful smile pulling the corners of his lips slightly before he nodded. “Thanks Meg. I knew I kept you around for a good reason,” he added, concealing a smile by turning his head aside and staring down at the bench they sat on.
However, of course, Hayden couldn’t resist almost choking on his laughter when Meg mentioned how she put her “shadow” to work. His gaze snapped back to her as he stared in mild disbelief. “No fucking way…” he practically cackled at the thought that Wonderboy probably assumed he’d been sleeping with and alongside his blushing bride this whole time. “Well that is awfully convenient. Hecate has to teach me that one next time I see her.” When the young woman held out her hand, he raised a brow suspiciously before extending his limb as well. “You’re not gonna, like, chop off a finger and grow it back or something, right? I wouldn’t put it past Her to teach you something like that…”

Megara let out a scoff of laughter. “You say that like you have a choice in the matter.” she joked. “We both know I’m too stubborn for you to actually get rid of me.” He might have been concealing a smile but she wasn’t. It felt nice to have this time with him and to banter with him again. They had tried to keep in touch when the barrier had been put up but the connection wasn’t always great and sometimes she couldn’t help but feel a sense of guilt hearing about his new way of life.
She donned a lopsided grin as he started to choke on his own laughter. “No, it’s completely true. I had to put that task on her because doing it myself was making things complicated.” Before he could say anything else she put a dismissive hand up. “It turns out I’m not as dead inside as we both previously thought and my sense of betrayal to you would have blown the whole plan to smithereens.” She took his hand as he extended it out to her. “No, nothing like that. If she had there wouldn’t be a use in showing it to you anyway. ..I should warn you though before we get started, Hecate explained to me that because I’m mortal and this type of magic is meant for divine creatures..there is a chance I may faint after. It’s normal and I’ll bounce back, I just don’t want to freak you out by it.”
She gave him time to process that and when he was sure he wanted to continue she cupped one of her hands under and over his and closed her eyes.
“Untangle threads of fate Uncloak my desire Replenish what was lost Unleash the godly fire “
Blue fire erupted from their hands and she watched with anticipation as the flame traveled up his arm and to the top of his head and down the other arm. “Hello, Big Azule.” She murmured under her breath as she gave him a satisfied once-over.

Hayden puffed up slightly at the implication that he’d gone soft, a frown furrowing his brow while he slowed his chewing to a stop. “Sof?” he grumbled over the mouthful of food, only to sink slightly when she explained what she meant by the comment. True, her job as his henchgirl had been to do his bidding, and by the gods had she done it well up to this point. She had Herc fooled, the Olympians fooled, everyone fooled…sometimes even he was fooled by the act. Meg took his plate and he resumed his slow chewing, “…it’s not that easy,” the god murmured, leaning back in a slouch against the bench. “I can’t…I can’t go home.” He knew eyes were on him now more than ever. If Zeus even caught a WHIFF of him trying to return to the Underworld, he’d be in much worse trouble than being turned mortal. A nice cozy spot in Tartarus was more likely. And the thought of being trapped there for eternity…the possibility of seeing his father there…it made ice run through his normally hot blood.
All this time he had hoped to keep the charade going, to dream that one day—maybe, with Meg’s help—he could not only get the Underworld back, but truly overthrow the Olympians once and for all. But deep down he knew that it was just a farce. Glancing over at her, the former god gave a sigh and nodded slightly. “Yeah. I know.”
Arms crossing, Hayden gave her a wry look. “Mortals have split for less, Princess.” But the look melted into surprise when she mentioned Hecate teaching her some spells. “Wait, really? So, what, you just have…“shadow Meg” doing chores around the house? Cooking him dinner? Cleaning his tightie-whities?” The thought of Meg, even a shade of herself, having to do household chores made a chuckle escape from his lips. “Looks like you have been busy, Nutmeg. Learning from the best the Underworld has to offer. Hecate must be having the time of her life teaching you her little tricks.”

She hated seeing him like this. He looked so down on his luck and like he had lost all hope. She reached out to comb her fingers through the right side of his hair. “Perhaps not, but we will find a way. You’re not down for the count yet. I won’t stop until there is a crown atop your head again. No matter what its ties are.” She assured him. Even if he didn’t want Olympus anymore, that would be okay with her. She wasn’t so devoted to him because of the aspirations he had, she truly believed that the cosmos owed him--big time. So as long as he was in a place where he felt content, then she could feel content too.
She gave a shrug. “While that is very true, like you said it’s not that simple for me. --I mean I have no problem doing it. Say the word and I’d hand him the papers, but I know that there is going to be a lot of questions if my reasoning isn’t acceptable. Though, somedays I don’t care about that so much.” She gave a laugh as he listed off things that she could ask her duplicate to do for her. “She even shares the marital bed with him.” Though he probably could have come up with that conclusion on his own. “Yes, I have been enjoying my time as queen. It sure beats the mundane routine that goes on in Wonderboy’s home.” She put her plate with his and offered him her hand with the palm facing upwards. “She actually taught me one I think you might like, if you’d be interested in letting me show it to you.”

A pensive, tense silence fell between them at Meg’s question; Hayden hesitantly pushed his fork around the plate, nudging aside some of the food while he thought it over. The plan had come to a grinding halt after his “banishment” to New Mythos. And frankly, while he still hated the hit to his pride and just the general smugness of the Olympians after he had lost, something was keeping him from moving forward with his schemes. “I dunno,” Hayden finally uttered under his breath, reaching up to rub the skin between his furrowed brows with his knuckle. “Maybe. I…I dunno. After this, after being sent here and losing my realm…losing everything…” He couldn’t afford any more losses. “I just…want things to move on. I just want to go home again. And if that means…playing house with Wonderboy to convince him to tell dear ol’ dad to give me my shit back…then…” he met her gaze with his dark gaze, “I’m sorry.”
He knew what she meant. He knew Hercules was just a pawn in the grand scheme of things, and that Meg would find a way around having to get too close with him. It still didn’t feel great knowing he’d put her in that position. Returning to his food, he took another bite and hummed softly, a scoff leaving his lips. “Whad’you mean? You hire a nanny to take care of him?” Hayden snorted. “If so, better make sure she can turn him to stone if he looks at her sideways. Otherwise if he’s anything like his old man, you’ll find yourself up to your neck in bastard demigods runnin’ around the house…”
✧༝┉┉┉┉┉˚*❋ ❋ ❋*˚┉┉┉┉┉༝✧
She let him get all his words out before letting out an exhale through her nose. “I think life inside the barrier has made you soft if you think it’s necessary to apologize to me.” she stated in a warm tone as she leaned over so they were shoulder to--well--almost shoulder. “I knew what I was signing myself up for when I agreed to this. My objective here is to make you happy.” As he finished the last bit of food she took his plate. “There’s more than one way to decapitate the Hydra, Rex. If I divorced him there would be nothing stopping you from coming home. You could also just come home, what with the new occupation it wouldn’t be too unreasonable that you’d have reason to be in the Underworld. But if the role of Wonderboy’s trophy wife is the role you want me to play then I’ll play it until you tell me to come home.” She nudged him “And hey, you never lost me--or the Underworld. Both have always belonged to you.”
She let out a snort of laughter. “If he had though, I’d have an excuse to divorce him without rising suspicion.” She shook her head. “And you’re not actually too far off. Hecate has been helping me with magic and I learned how to make a duplicate of myself, she only lasts for twelve hours but I gain knowledge of everything that happens when her time is up.”
It was nights like tonight that she could understand the frustrations of the god who had ruled before her. The massive influx of souls making their way down was giving her a headache. She knew how to accommodate for them but the constant running back and forth was very tedious and every time she thought she was almost done she would come back to find more souls waiting for her.
Lantern in hand she returned to the surface to see what the commotion was. The sight of people running in different directions and the creatures that were popping up reminded her of something she would have seen back home. It was something that she was so used to that she didn’t even seem alarmed, even when one of the creatures tried to grab at her dress. Swiftly she swung her lantern and hit the creature on their head causing the creature to fall down. “When I say I miss home, this is not one of the things I refer to. “ She muses aloud. And then a chilling thought hits her--if there is trouble Wonderboy would not resist the need to fight and keep everyone safe. “Does anyone know of a place where these things aren’t trying to spawn?”

Hayden was quiet, breathing slowly through his nose, trying to keep his thoughts from swirling out of control. But feeling Meg dragging his gaze back to her, his heartbeat only quickened in response. Gods, he hated this feeling. No one really thought Hades was a god capable of any sort of affection…but his history showed otherwise. He was capable of deep longing, of rash decisions made by a mind clouded by want and desires, like any other god. Giving the young woman a flat expression, however, Hayden shook his head at her. “Well I’m not big on poetry. And I’m even less big on losing my best henchgirl to a well-aimed bolt of lightning because I…because she kissed me.”
He didn’t shift over when she scooted beside him, instead readjusting his plate on his lap and picking up his fork to take a swipe at his food. As her words trailed off, he gave her another wry look. “I wouldn’t finish that thought if I were you, because I know by that smile, you’re not thinking the same thing I’m thinking. You’ve been stuck in this world too long, Princess,” he continued gesturing at her with his forkful of food, “if you’ve forgotten what a god is capable of doing to a woman who ‘wrongs’ him. I’m sure if you stop by good ol’ Dusa’s statue island, or maybe have a chat with Pasiphae, it’ll jog your memory.” He took a bite of his meal, glancing around briefly just to make sure that no one was in the graveyard.
His enjoyment of the food, however, surpassed the paranoia; Hayden melted as he chewed and a soft hum followed. “This is way better than that sandwich,” he murmured, savoring each bite. “Wonderbreath is a lucky man if this is the kind of shit he gets to enjoy for dinner.”

“With all due respect, the bench implies otherwise.” She stated, letting it get quiet between them. Only enough to process. “So does that mean that you still wish to move forward with the plan? Are we still aiming to take down Olympus?” she asked with a sideways glance. “Because, correct me if I’m wrong, you’ve never had any complaints about my affections before.” The only thing that made this bittersweet to her was the knowledge that a younger version of herself would have been heart broken over his apparent rejection. Too naïve to see the compliment in all of it. Why he would not be so keen on losing her after everything else he has already lost. “But I’ll put on my best Thalia and Melpomene if that’s what you want me to do.”
She gave a laugh that pushed air out of her nostrils. “I’ve forgotten nothing. That’s why I let you make up your own ending to that musing. A lot of time has passed since I last saw you, I wouldn’t say that I’ve been here too long but circumstances being what they are and there being a third-party threat, some things have been put into perspective for me and it’s become a priority for me to make sure you know that my affiliations have not changed. Anything that didn’t belong to Wonderboy before all this, still doesn’t belong to him today.” He’d know what those things were, she didn’t have to list them. Hercules never meant anything to her.
She gave a lopsided grin as he raved about her cooking. She was glad to see that her thought about him wanting a little taste of home had been correct. “I actually don’t know what he eats. Being Queen of the Underworld doesn’t allow a lot of time to be Suzy Homemaker, though he wouldn’t know that.”
GILMORE GIRLS (2000 — 2007)

Hayden could hear the tone in her voice—hard to miss, really—when she reminded him of why she was ball-and-chained to Wonderboy in the first place. Yes, it had been his idea. But he still felt a twinge of…something…when he had to watch Meg and the hero ride off into the sunset together. Phase 2 of the plan had gone smoothly—so why was he still so bitter about that? “Yeah well, the gods don’t really have all the luck in marrying women who want to be with us. So I’d say he should just get used to it,” he grunted under his breath.
“Most people would think so. And I know,” Hayden stated before she could interject, “you’re not like most people.” When Meg mentioned her excitement at cooking up one of his favorites and bringing it to him, though, the man gave her a wry smile. “What, you don’t think I can cook up a gourmet moussaka on my own? Well…you’d be right.” He wasn’t exactly a great chef. Or even a good one. Most of his food as a mortal consisted of anything that he could order in or have delivered to his mortuary.
He had shifted his attention away from her and back to the food when she brought her hand to her lips, missing the tears brimming at her lashes (probably for the best; he was never good around a lot of emotion—ironic, given his job now was to sympathize with people at their MOST emotional). He was just about to tuck into his food, hoping to steer the conversation away from his little memorial memento to Meg—half-tempted to scoot himself over to hide it behind him—when he heard the soft swear coming from Meg and glanced up just in time to feel her grabbing his face and pulling him towards her.
The kiss made him freeze, his veins going ice-cold instead of fire-hot like they once did. It’s not that he didn’t like it…he was just surprised. Surprised and…well…like Meg said, fuck it. Against his better judgment, the stiff-spined response melted slightly, his eyes half-lidded as he let the kiss linger, a hand almost letting his plate of food slip from its grasp while the other hovered awkwardly over the fork on his lap. After a few seconds, however, the world seemed to return. His brain snapping back to reality, Hayden inhaled sharply through his nose before turning his head aside, looking down at the ground and cursing softly under his breath. “C’mon Meg,” he murmured, his tone hushed. “Y’know doing that is going to get you killed. Or worse, it Zeus finds out you’re kissing his good-for-nothing brother behind his golden child’s back.”
✧༝┉┉┉┉┉˚*❋ ❋ ❋*˚┉┉┉┉┉༝✧
She said nothing as she held his gaze for a few moments of silence as she processes a hidden meaning in his words that she knew he most likely hadn’t intended. Because all these years there was a truth hidden beneath her rib cage that she could never speak out loud--time might have changed the reason, but the truth still remained. “I couldn’t have said it better myself.” She stated with a gentle hum.
Her lips gave a lopsided grin as he accurately predicted the rebuttal that she had locked and loaded. “As long as we’re clear about that.” She wasn’t like most people. Something made obvious by her current situation. It was obvious to her that if she were like most people that she would have fallen hopelessly in love with the hero she had married. It was impossible to go anywhere with him and not find a trail of admirers swooning from afar. Any affection he showed her only made her feel ill, though she wasn’t allowed to show it. “Actually that wasn’t it. I just thought you would want a little taste of home--since you’ve been banished for so long and I don’t think anyone from Mythos Valley would be particularly knowledgeable on how to make one. Plus, I thought it would be better to check in in person to see what the next step is.”
To feel him kiss her back, even if for a few moments gave her such a rush of exultant splendor. It was the first time in what felt like eons that her lips could meet his. She’d fantasized about this moment but her day dreams hadn’t done it justice. She should have expected that he would be the one to break the kiss. Especially in the manor that he had done so. She knew that he was attempting to bring her back to reality with his words but she wouldn’t be that easily swayed. She’d worked too hard and waited too long for it to all be for nothing. Her hand returned to his cheek to bring his gaze back to hers. She wasn’t offended or hurt, she knew he was just looking out for her. “I think it would be pretty poetic if a kiss with you lead to my death.” she mused. “We both know I run the same risk even if he were to find out that I’ve been working for you this whole time with the intention of making and him and his golden son look like fools. I might as well enjoy myself.” she sat next to him. “And I don’t know what could be worse than death, except..” She gave another lopsided grin as she left her unfinished thought hang in the air.

It was closing time, in fact, it was past closing time at Leonora’s shop. She was floating through her shop, lightly dusting over the knickknacks and trinkets that lined her shelves when she heard the electronic chime of her door alarm. “Late.” Leonora remarked aloud, her voice neutral and her back still to the person entering her door. “Right on time.” She turned, one corner of her mouth curling upward into a smirk. She knew, of course she knew, that they would be late.

It was times like these that Margaery really missed the Fates. She would have gone to them with her question if she could but their magic was too precious and they had to find a place to hide so they could do their work and be safe from anything that Tilly could unleash upon them. Then she wouldn’t have to resort to sneaking around at night while Wonderboy thought she was stuck at work. “Sorry, I ran into some trouble on my way over here.” She stated as she walked into the shop. The trouble being that her in-laws were having dinner in a neighboring bistro and she had to wait for them to leave to be sure that she was not spotted. “But thank you for seeing me anyways.”

Constance’s laughter bubbled from her lips at Margaery’s words. “Well, granted, I wouldn’t have minded an entertaining man to join me for my afternoon tea. But that man was anything but entertaining,” she said in a slightly hushed voice, even though she didn’t really care if anyone heard.
When the other woman mentioned having a “killer left hook” for such troublesome men, Connie’s grin widened. “Oh I’m sure he would have regretted meeting this killer left hook of yours. Men fail to realize just how creative we can be in our ways of dispatching of them,” she said with a soft click of her tongue. “But it is nice to meet another woman on this side of town who speaks so frankly on such things. Most of the ones I’ve seen here tend to be all sugar and no spice.”

“Oh, but if you ask I’m sure he would disagree and say he was plenty entertaining.” She said with a laugh.
“I agree with that. In my line of work I come across many unfortunate souls who underestimated how creative we can be.” She twisted her glass in her hand. “I must say I agree, there aren’t many who are so willing to be as bold with their words but...I had to be. I’m sort of a riches to rags back to riches story. I don’t think too many had to defend themselves as much as I had to.”
Ah! Right in the heart!
