In December 2018, I graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with my Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering with a biomaterials concentration. I've recently finished my first week as a new Research Assistant III at the CBSD (Center for Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics) at the University of Montana. This national Center of Biomedical Research Excellence features many exciting opportunities and projects. I greatly enjoyed meeting all my new coworkers and colleagues during my first week in beautiful Missoula. I look forward to helping to advance research projects involving protein expression, protein purification, and protein structure determination.

What do get when you cross the Olympics with a genetic engineering science fair? The annual iGEM Giant Jamboree! This global research conference focuses on synthetic biology with its vision of open source, standardized genetic engineering. Thousands of students from hundreds of teams worldwide conduct research projects and compete in tracks like manufacturing, therapeutics, and information processing. Teams are encouraged to collaborate and improve existing biological parts, among other criteria, to advance up through the Bronze, Silver, and Gold medals. Attending the Giant Jamboree this November was one of the best experiences of my life. The joys of teamwork, innovation, and discovery generated a real sense of camaraderie as diverse student teams applied genetic engineering to solve problems and improve the world. From science diplomacy to entrepreneurial networking and original music videos by student teams, the iGEM Giant Jamboree experience was second to none. If you’re a student, find a way to create or join a 2018 iGEM team. You can make friends and build your resume while expanding your contacts in an exciting, fast-growing industry.

2017 RPI iGEM Student Team

This is the first year when RPI students will be participating in iGEM (the international Genetically Engineered Machine competition). Our goal is to synthesize pure medium-chain sophorolipids, which we expect to have useful therapeutic activity. We plan to use Starmarella bombicola (yeast) for sophorolipid metabolic engineering via repressing MFE-2. Our student team is also on Twitter (@RPIiGEM). Contact us if you want to know more!
