French Post 7!! Future Tense: Irregular Future Stems
As I mentioned in my last post, there are verbs that have future stems different from their infinitive form. In this post I’ll just list the ones that I’ve learned and use some of them in example sentences.
acheter: achèter-
appeler: appeller-
payer: paier-
avoir: aur-
être: ser-
aller: ir-
faire: fer-
venir: viendr-
revenir: reviendr-
devoir: devr-
pouvoir: pourr-
vouloir: voudr-
envoyer: enverr-
recevoir: recevr-
savoir: saur-
voir: verr-
amener: amèner
jeter: jetter
Example Sentences:
Nous verrons un film demain soir. - We will see a movie tomorrow night.
Mes parents revienndront le weekend prochain.
Nous irons faire du shopping quand nous aurons le temps. - We will go shopping when we have the time.
French Post 6!! Future Tense
Unlike the near future (ex: Je vais nager - I am going to swim), this tense describes what will happen (Je nagerai - I will swim).
In order to form this tense, just add the avoir endings to the future stem of the verb! (I’ll go over what both of these are)
First, I’ll review the avoir endings:
je -ai
tu -as
il/elle/on -a
nous -ons
vous -ez
ils/elles -ont
Next, the future stem.
The future stem is generally just the verb in it’s infinitive form.
ex: The future stem of manger is just manger
With -re verbs, you still keep the verb in the infinitive form but you drop the -e.
Ex: Vendre would become vendr.
So in order to say you will do something, just add the avoir ending to the future stem!
Some examples:
Je danserai - I will dance
Nous mangerons - We will eat
Tu finiras- You will finish.
As always, there are irregular verbs that have different stems. I’ll go over those in the next post.

French Post 4!! Subjunctive Part 1
Sentences in the subjunctive express necessity or obligation.
It takes the form of: Il faut que + subject + subjunctive verb
Ex: Il faut que j’étudie pour l’examen. - It is necessary that I study for the exam.
When using the subjunctive, the verbs have different endings. I’ll go over how to form the subjunctive forms of regular verbs in this post and irregular verbs in part 2.
The general rule is to conjugate the verb in the present ils form, remove the -ent, and replace it with the subjunctive ending that matches the subject.
First I’ll list the subjunctive endings:
je: -e
tu: -es
il/elle/on: -e
nous: -ions
vous: -iez
ils/elles: -ent
For example, to form the subjunctive form of the verb finir, first you conjugate it to the present ils form (finissent), then remove the -ent (finiss), then add the subjunctive ending that corresponds to the subject (je finisse, tu finisses, il finisse, nous finissions, vous finissiez, ils finissent).
Here’s some examples of the subjuncive forms of -er and -re verbs.
parler : je parle, tu parles, il parle, nous parlions, vous parliez, ils parlent
vendre: je vende, tu vendes, il vende, nous vendions, vous vendiez, ils vendent
Examples in sentences:
Il faut que vous laviez le linge. - It is necessary that you wash the laundry.
Il faut qu’ils réusissent. - It is necessary that they succeed.
Il faut que je tonde la pelouse. - It is necessary that I mow the lawn.
French Post 4!! Passé Composé Part 4
My last passé composé post for tonight (bless up). This one will be about putting passé composé sentences in the negative.
Ok real simple... just put the ne and pas around the helping verb. Not the verb after the helping verb, they go around the helping verb.
Examples:
Ce matin je, n’ai pas mangé le petit déjeuner. - This morning I didn’t eat breakfast.
Il n’est pas monté dans le bus. - He did not get on the bus.
Les étudiants n’ont pas fini leurs devoirs. - The students did not finish their homework.
French Post 3!! Passé Composé Part 3
Now we’ll go over the verbs that take être as the helping verb.
The trick I leaned to remember these verbs was DRMRSVANDERTRAMP.
Descendre (Descendu)
Revenir (Revenu)
Mourir (Mort)
Retourner (Retourné)
Sortir (Sorti)
Venir (Venu)
Arriver (Arrivé)
Naître (Né)
Devenir (Devenu)
Entrer (Entré)
Rentrer (Rentré)
Tomber (Tombé)
Rester (Resté)
Aller (Allé)
Monter (Monté)
Partir (Parti)
**Any irregular verb endings were bolded
As you can see most of these verbs relate to motion or movement.
Unlike the verbs that take avoir as a helping verbs, these verbs need to be agreed with the subject. For a feminine subject add an -e, for a plural subject add an -s, and for a feminine, plural subject add an -es.
Ex: Il est allé.
Elle est allée.
Ils ont allés.
Elles ont allées.
Example Sentences:
Je suis née le 9 septembre. - I was born on September 9. (Feminine)
Ils ont sortis samedi soir. - They went out Saturday night.
Il est arrivé hier matin. - He arrived yesterday morning.
French Post 2!! Passé Composé Part 2
Next I’ll go over irregular verbs that use avoir as the helping verb.
These verbs include:
être (été)
avoir (eu)
vouloir (voulu)
boire (bu)
lire (lu)
voir (vu)
mettre (mis)
prendre (pris)
faire (fait)
Next to each verb in the parentheses is it’s past participle.
These work the same as the verbs discussed in the first passé composé post, just put the correct conjugation of avoir and then the past participle of the verb.
Examples:
Ce matin, j’ai été très fatiguée. - This morning I was very tired.
Pendant le déjeuner elle a bu du soda. - During lunch she drank some soda.
Dans la classe d’anglais, nous avons lu. - During English class we read.
