castiel is the perfect counterexample to the myth of the “overly sexual” or “hypersexual” bisexual. it’s funny how easily dean is labeled bi while castiel isn’t, even though both have demonstrated attraction to more than one gender—simply expressing it in different ways. this raises an important question: is dean perceived as bisexual because of his overt, unapologetic sexual desire, rather than because of his underlying capacity for attraction? framing bisexuality this way reinforces a far too common/wildly harmful stereotype—that bi people are inherently promiscuous, greedy, or perpetually horny, often veering to the false notion that bisexuality is tied to hypersexuality, as a disorder. that! is! not! true! sexual expression/libido are personal traits, not sexual orientations. they vary from person to person, regardless of sexual orientation!
castiel is bisexual, without question. and so is dean! i think the difficulty many people have in aligning him (and not dean) with a bi identity, stems from the fact that he isn’t loud or performative about his attraction, nor especially demonstrative about sex itself. but we have to remember: volume/enthusiasm are not criteria for bisexuality, nor any other sexuality!
if we look at endverse castiel, (castiel’s future self), he’s shown on the verge of participating in a o*gy with four different female-presenting individuals. it’s even implied that this kind of event was routine for him! and while the show never specifies the genders of all his partners, that ambiguity matters. it leaves space for attraction beyond one gender, including men or masculine-presenting individuals, as well as women and female-presenting people! more importantly, this is still castiel! if sexuality is something inherent, (true to a someone, regardless of circumstance), then his future self cannot be dismissed/compartmentalized. to deny the validity of endverse/future castiel, is to ignore a version of castiel who is simply less restrained, and not fundamentally different. in doing so, people aren’t protecting a “pure” interpretation of the character; they’re reinforcing a false idea. the idea that bisexuality must look loud, sexual or explicit at all times or in general, in order to count. again, not okay!
while i can’t definitively speak to castiel’s romantic attraction, what people need to understand is that romantic and sexual attraction are not the same thing. they’re independent to each other. yes, they can often overlap—but they don’t have to, and for many people they don’t. that’s exactly why things like FWB and hookups can work, so long as the people involved aren’t romantically entangled.
in castiel’s case, there are subtle hints of romantic attraction towards meg, and it’s not unreasonable to interpret him as more homoromantic—especially if dean is canonically the single person he professed love to. but at the same time, castiel has had very limited opportunity to explore romantic relationships. and because of that, shutting down broader interpretations (simply because he hasn’t displayed equally deep romantic attachment to people of other genders), doesn’t hold up. a lack of on-screen exploration is not evidence of absence. it’s especially weak grounds for declaring castiel strictly homosexual or exclusively homoromantic, especially when the show’s narrative itself continuously restricts his chances for romantic development!
but i will say this: castiel’s sexual attraction to meg was real and unmistakable. it’s shown on two separate occasions, and is most clearly affirmed when he chooses to deepen a kiss that meg initiates. that matters! it’s castiel actively leaning into his sexuality—pushing past the filtering of his grace and consciously setting aside the fact that he can see the demon beneath a female vessel. his attraction is what leads the interaction! not confusion, not manipulation, not passivity—but desire. he makes a deliberate choice to engage, which highlights that his attraction to meg is genuine and self-directed, not incidental/coerced.
