You? Envy me? - Alec volturi x Insecure!Female!Human!Reader
Being the mate of Alec Volturi wasn’t something you’d ever expected.
Sometimes, if you were honest, you still didn’t understand it.
Most days, those thoughts were quiet.
Because Felix treated you like his little sister.
Because Demetri was always making you laugh.
Because Heidi spoiled you and insisted on girls’ days.
And because Jane, though she’d never admit it, had become fiercely protective of you.
But then there was the secretary.
Worked alongside the kings.
Handled diplomatic correspondence.
And somehow always looked flawless while doing it.
But every time you saw her, that ugly voice in the back of your mind whispered:
It wasn’t Claudia’s fault.
In fact, she was perfectly polite.
That almost made it worse.
Because you couldn’t even dislike her.
One afternoon, you were sitting in the library while Alec finished some duties.
Claudia stood nearby, discussing documents with Aro.
And Aro looked delighted.
“Wonderful work, Claudia!”
Without realizing it, you quietly closed your book.
Later that day, you skipped dinner.
And then you spent most of the afternoon hiding in your room.
Because normally, by this time, Felix had already burst through your door demanding movie night.
Demetri would be bothering you.
And Heidi would’ve dragged you shopping.
Those three people happened to know you far too well.
The Holy Trinity of Trouble.
Felix immediately frowned.
“You’ve been avoiding us.”
“Sweetheart,” Heidi said gently, “you ignored three messages, two calls, and Felix.”
Three unimpressed stares.
“Oh no,” Demetri sighed dramatically. “She’s lying.”
Heidi’s expression softened instantly.
Felix practically launched himself across the room.
Eventually, through tears and embarrassment, you explained.
How accomplished she was.
And how useless you felt compared to her.
“That’s why you’re crying?”
Heidi looked heartbroken.
“Claudia?” Felix repeated.
Demetri burst out laughing.
He finally composed himself.
“You think Alec wants someone like Claudia?”
“He absolutely could not,” Heidi said immediately.
“Kid, Alec doesn’t even notice when people flirt with him.”
“Remember that French vampire?”
“She literally sat in his lap.”
“And he asked if she had injured her legs.”
You couldn’t help laughing.
Then Heidi cupped your face.
Her golden eyes were kind.
“To paperwork,” Felix said.
“No,” Demetri corrected gently.
“People who love helping you.”
It happened when Claudia came to deliver some documents.
Alec quietly looked at you.
“You’re avoiding my eyes.”
“And you’ve apologized six times today.”
Eventually, after much gentle prodding and one very concerned Jane glaring from the doorway, you told him.
His voice sounded genuinely confused.
“Do you believe I love you because you are efficient?”
“Or because you file paperwork?”
“Because you speak seven languages?”
“Because you organize Aro’s schedules?”
“Then why would I choose you based on those things?”
And Alec’s expression broke your heart.
He sat beside you immediately.
His thumb brushed your knuckles.
“She doesn’t laugh at my terrible jokes.”
“I make one every decade.”
“She doesn’t argue with Jane.”
“Nobody argues with Jane.”
“That’s because she steals my books.”
“And she doesn’t hide strawberries in her pockets because she forgets they’re there.”
Alec leaned his forehead against yours.
“You are endlessly curious.”
“And you make my existence brighter.”
“That is not incompetence.”
“But I don’t do anything.”
Alec looked genuinely startled.
“As though that is a small thing.”
But Claudia simply looked concerned.
“May I tell you something?”
“Do you know what I do after work?”
“You make flower crowns with Didyme.”
Her smile became wistful.
Felix wrapped an arm around your shoulders.
“None of us are keeping you around because you’re useful.”
And as you laughed with your friends, with Claudia smiling beside you and Alec holding your hand—
Worth wasn’t earned by productivity.
Not to the people who loved you.
Alec looked at you as though you were the most precious thing in his immortal life.
Not because you were useful.
Not because you were perfect.
Not because you accomplished extraordinary things.
That had always been more than enough. 💜
