Short backstory:
I've loved the koopalings ever since I could type into google, but my feelings never bloomed until I was 13 or so. By that time I was already experiencing fictional crushes, but nothing really swiped me off my feet, before Ludwig happened.
I think the moment I caught feelings was on my first playthrough of NSMB Wii. I was already watching through Dannywaving at that point, but I tried to rationalize these feelings away until..
Yeah.
I was never the same since that moment. I count all these years even when I masked heavily, because it never went away. I still had a weak spot for deep blues and pianos and german accents, and even when I wasn't ready to stop lying to myself, he brought me joy.
I think I realized what was going on back in 2024, when I watched through the Super Mario Movie. Everything I've been trying to bury just cracked open when I spotted the piano emblem, out of all things. And now we're here, as I try to learn as much about him as I can..
Why do I love him?
He's confident, proud, an eccentric that's not afraid to exist. While he does exaggerate his demanor to be more 'palatable', he speaks his mind and shares the things he loves without a worry. He may be intimidating, but really he's an artist that keeps seeking patterns and sense in a place as illogical as Bowser's Kingdom.
A villain that's also smart enough to be nuanced, who loves his siblings, is honorable, and can loosen up when nobody is looking. Did you know he's a gamer?
There's so much going on with him, and he's a tertiary Super Mario character for crying out loud! I'm absolutely smitten.
Imagine your evil f/o admitting to you that you're the only one that they trust, the only one they ever let in on their rawest of emotions.
They become a big softie around you: resting their chin atop your head, snaking their arms around your waist. Maybe even unexpectedly taking hold of your hand, caressing it with their thumb.
Try as they might to remain stoic and uphold their villainous persona, they visibly melt every time you come into view. You are their safe space, their be all and end all. Without you, there is no them.
Anyone who has spent five seconds around me ever: yes, you love the Koopalings, we know, you love the Koopalings so much, they are the light of your life, you love them so much, you just love the Koopalings, we KNOW, you love the Koopalings you fucking love the Koopalings ok we know, we get it, YOU LOVE THE KOOPALINGS. WE GET IT.

Roy Koopa = Roy Orbison.
Iggy Koopa = Iggy Pop.
Larry Koopa = Larry Mullen Jr.
Lemmy Koopa = Lemmy Kilmister.
Ludwig von Koopa = Ludwig von Beethoven.
Wendy O. Koopa = Wendy O. Williams.
Morton Jr Koopa = Morton Downey Jr.
But this is a challenge for drawing the squad, unfortunately I had this saved on my phone which is the second image below. I want to give credit to whoever came up with the original. I just had the joy of adding my own twist to it.
someone wanted to see my takes on their parents after my comic about them, soooo...
Ludwig, with his parents Johann and Helene von Koopa. They've already been named in the comic itself.
Obviously, Johann is based on the actual father of Ludwig van Beethoven.
Helene is based on Helene von Breuning, someone Ludwig van Beethoven referred to as his "second mother" because of how she shaped his career in a more favorable light.
Larry and his parents LonLon and Margaret Koopa.
Larry is lazy, so what better to model his parents after spoiled folk who rose to the top and generally made things worse for others?
Morton and his parents Morton Koopa Sr. and Mamorton.
It's basically how they're depicted in the comic, though with color added to them. Mamorton is pink because the two are designed to be ridiculously simple male/female palette swaps.
I'm sure they don't actually look like that if I didn't account for the comic, but this is a funnier outcome.
Iggy and his parents Murdoc and Ren Koopa.
Murdoc is modeled after... well, Murdoc from Gorillaz, while Ren is modeled after Ron Asheton from The Stooges, the band where Iggy's namesake, Iggy Pop, comes from.
Spiritually, I wanted Iggy's birth to feel like an accident between two band members who never really wanted a child but had to balance between him and their music career. Keyword "had."
Murdoc Koopa doesn't necessarily have to be a Koopa. He could just be the actual Murdoc from Gorillaz who fucked a turtle before abandoning his son for the army.

not thinking of Wendy and Lemmy's parents at the moment because of them working at the circus in that comic. i'm leaning on the two being separate orphans who got adopted into the circus, but idk the circumstances.
