This is really inspiring me to work on a Mechanicus cosplay.
Suited up for Escape Velocity 2018 in Washington DC this weekend and won Best Overall in their fashion show. Also got a great picture of me talking to my daughter in her Rey costume.
3D printed power sword pre cleaning up. I have the support material off now and have begun sanding. One week to go before Escape Velocity.
As a general rule, I only cosplay what I love. It makes it easier to do the work, and the love shows through in the cosplay. This was an easy one because Terry Dresbach’s costume design on Outlander is 100% over-the-top perfection. Her costumes are as much a part of the story as any plot-point.
The Paris Dress - the brown floral fabric that Terry Dresbach found at Britex in San Francisco for this dress was vintage, and no longer available. So to make this dress, I started with a foundation of warm brown kona cotton, and then collected floral curtains, appliques, sheets and material to create the floral repeat. Each piece was fused to adhesive backing, cut out, and assembled into the same repeat 8 times across nearly 25 feet of fabric for the skirt. it was then pleated down with inverted box pleats inside of box pleats. In the show, the jacket was pieced together from the remaining fabric and has pregnancy lacings on either side, so when I drafted my pattern I took that into account. The underskirt is curry colored kona cotton to create a consistent appearance with the overskirt. The pocket hoops and large (10’ circumference) oval grand pannier were made using pvc and some of the floral fabric left over from the construction of the fabric. The hat was made from a straw placemat, shaped with heat and steam and then decorated. I made hat pins and dyed the gloves with turmeric to match the curry colored underskirt. I also made a shopping basket, lined with the same floral material as my hoops - to carry my stuff at the con. I have over 100 hours in the construction of the dress alone.
Outlander fans were totally in love with the costumes. I have had people chase me down for photos several times in each dress. Many people thought I was Mary Poppins in the Paris dress - I guess it’s the flowers? To be honest, I didn’t know how much recognition to expect - these are kind of niche costumes - kind of “costume-lover costumes” because they aren’t flashy, but technically very complex and interesting. Not the kind of rush for pictures as I get when I’m in armor, but as I said, I only do costumes I love, and I do them for me. When other people love them too, that’s icing on the cake.
Costuming is a wonderful outlet for my creative, maker spirit. I enjoy the challenge of coming up with innovative low-cost solutions to big-budget costume problems. And I love to recycle old things into new cosplays! Armor builds are really my first love in costuming - I have built many large complex armor suits. I have also met many amazing, creative, lovely people in the costuming community. I have found the cosplay community populated with solidly decent human beings with a love of making - it’s my kind of community.
I strongly encourage people who are thinking about costuming to get started and make something! I do a lot of outreach, mentoring and volunteering in my local maker community, especially with younger people, getting them fired up about making things with their hands. Everyone has a fandom that they are passionate about - and to me, one of the best ways you can express that passion is through costuming. And “making” offers a lot of great life-skills, on top of getting a cool costume out of the process. There are many great resources out there to help you get started making - and I offer my assistance to new cosplayers at every panel I do. So, if you are thinking about costuming, jump in! It’s awesome!

Plasma pistol finished with lights and sounds.
Plasma Pistol with sound and effects done. The power chamber glow is done with a 8x8 NeoPixel and 7 LED coin NeoPixel for the plasma blast. And there is a charging sound after each shot.
Plasma pistol internals being redone. Will have a firing and charging sound along with better LEDs for firing. Of course the small Arduino Firecricket I have can't control the 64 LED NeoPixel panel because it only outputs at 3.3 volts instead of the full 5 volts that the Uno can do. So it will have an Uno for the large NeoPixel and the Firecricket for sound and firing LEDs. Going to be rough on the battery life but will be worth it I think.
The armor looks a lot more sinister with the flash off. Working on adding sound to the plasma gun now but of course I lost the code I used so I am starting from scratch.
I am not dead, I promise. Got a bit burnt out after Awesomecon last year and life got crazy for a bit but getting back into the grove now. First thing that means is repairing all of the damage to my space marine armor from the fall. Arms, helmet, pauldrons, and gloves repaired. Next onto the torso, which needs a lot of internal repairs and I need to raise up the backpack a good 9-12 inches. Legs should only require a bit of work and then I am going to add sound to the armor, a cloak, and totally redesign the sword. Once all of that is done a proper photo shoot since I got one picture before falling last time.
Found some good photos of me all suited up at the cosplay contest at Awesomecon.
Saturday and Sunday from Awesome Con 2017.
Cosplay photos from the first day of AwesomwCon.
Right shoulder pad all finished up along with the finished plasma pistol with NeoPixels inside to make it glow with some LEDs in the barrel for when you pull the trigger. All that is left is the neck for the helmet and the power sword. 5 more days to Awesomecon to finish everything up.
Finished helmet with the LEDs off in the first picture and on in the second. I used some of the transparent Worbla for the lenses sprayed with red tinting spray paint and then lit with two 5mm LEDs each. Best part is that I can still very clearly see through them.
There was a question in my feed about what types of materials you could use to stiffen up foam. It looks like many people were unfamiliar with this product from Bondo, which I think is a newer one from them. It works great, does not melt foam, and even has the bit of flex necessary to not crack off of foam easily. I have made extensive use of it on my Dark Angel armor with absolutely no issues. Sands easily and while you should wear a respirator for the fine particles they won't cause lung damage like resin can. They make smaller cans than this one but I used so much of it I finally just broke down and bought the industrial sized can of it.
Left shoulder pad finished, just need the weather to clear up so I can clear coat. Starting on the detail work for the right tomorrow.
