Smaugust day 27 - Dragonfire

Dragonfire is created through the use of two glands - a venom gland, and the firestarter gland. All dragons are technically venomous, though not all are capable of dragonfire or have particularly potent venom. They are able to inject with a bite if they need too, as the venom is only gaseous once it has been heated up in the adjacent firestarter gland, which can be controlled by the beast. Highly variable, the venom is paralytic, causing muscles to seize up either through bite or burns. This is especially potent in the Basilisks.
A dragon's final warning before breathing dragonfire is a tell-taking popping or sparking noise, as the firestarter creates sparks which outputs through several holes in the roof of the mouth, accompanied with sharp hissing as they fill their lungs. The generation of the static electricity heats up the venom gland next to it, bringing the specialised venom into its gaseous form. The dragon can then release the venom, igniting it, and turn it into anywhere between a single burst of flame to a steady flamethrower in whatever direction they're facing by forcefully exhaling. As such they can only breathe fire for as long as they can exhale. The range also varies by species and type of fire, with fireballs going much farther, however Wyverns are known to have the farthest range of the flamethrower. Dragonspit is fireproof, and dragons may salivate extensively as they use dragonfire.
