A Butterfly and a Buttercup

A butterfly belongs to the Animal Kingdom. A buttercup belongs to the Plant Kingdom. The butterfly moves through the air. The buttercup is rooted in the ground. They seem very different from each other. But are they?

Butterflies and most other animals come from eggs. And so do buttercups and most plants! A plant's egg is hidden inside a seed. The inside of a plant egg grows into a tiny plant a store of food. The inside of a butterfly egg grows into a tiny, curled-up caterpillar and a store of food.

A caterpillar hatches from an egg and begins to eat. A buttercup sprouts from a seed and begins to make food for itself. Both the caterpilar and the buttercup must have food, water, and air to live. So must all plants and animals.

A caterpillar grows. So does a buttercup. The caterpillar changes into a brightly colored butterfly. The buttercup bursts out with bright little flowers. When these things happen, both the butterfly and the buttercup have reached an important part of their lives. The butterfly will mate and lay eggs. The buttercup flowers will grow seeds. The butterfly eggs will become new little caterpillars. And the buttercup seeds will become new little buttercup plants.

So a butterfly and a buttercup aren't so different after all. Plants and animals both have the same needs and they both do many of the same things. They are both living creatures, each with its own way of life.

The World Turns Green

Now the tiny green heads of new plants are poking up from the brown earth and around the patches of snow. The little plants hold out their tiny leaves toward the sun. Their roots push down and spread out in the ground.

The roots of the older plants are working, too. They take in water. The water goes up through the plant and into the new little leaves.

The land is turning green, and green means food for many animals. So now the animals begin to appear.

Once again, plants and animals, the two kinds of living things, begin life anew in the springtime.

Wake-up time

The winter months slide slowly by. The sun begins to shine a little longer each day. The air grows a little warmer. The snow begins to melt and soak into the ground. The earth grows warm and wet and soft. This is what the plants have been waiting for.

Water soaks into the seeds. Their hard covers grow soft. The water makes the tiny plants and the stores of food inside the seeds swell up. The plants burst out of the seeds. From each seed, a tiny root pushes down into the earth, and a tiny stem with one or two leaves springs up.

The sleeping buds and roots of the older plants begin to stir. There is water in the ground again for them to find and drink.

Plants aren't the only things stirring. It is now wake-up time for many of the sleeping animals, too.

Sleeping Life

It is the flowers' nighttime...

In many parts of the world it is winter, and the ground lies cold and hard beneath snow and frost. The sleeping trees are brown and bare. The dry, dead stems of last year's plants shiver in the cold wind.

But under the snow and in the frozen ground are millions of seeds, underground stems, and roots that will be next summer's plants. Each seed is a package of life, with a tiny plant (seedling) and store of food inside it. On the roots and stems are buds, and each bud is the heart of a sleeping plant. A little warmth, a taste of water, and the plants will awake again.

And down in the ground, or snuggled beneath the snow-covered leaves, summer animals -- chipmunks, frogs, ants, spiders -- are sleeping, too. Like the plants, the animals are also waiting for warmth and life to come back to the land.

Springtime is a green time

When seedlings start their growing.

Summertime's a rainbow time

When many blooms are blowing.

Autumntime's a brown time

When seeds are ripe for sowing;

But wintertime's a white time

I loved this trip and I bet it would of been a ton better if we could of gotten out of the car. I think in June if things open up again, we will spend hopefully four days out here. I’d like to see the Natural Bridge, Visit the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute at Williams College, camp on Mount Greylock, actually walk around the Hancock Shaker Village, bring Mike to the Berkshire Garden Center, tour Chesterwood, and swim at Hampton Pond.

I remember visiting the Berkshire Garden Center with Ladies Weekend, and the Norman Rockwell Museum, where Aunt Lisa introduced me to tomato motz sandwiches during our picnic. It must of been one of my first ladies weekends.

Mom don’t worry, we stayed in the car and brought our snacks.
