“What was it that he asked for again? Eight crayon boxes and four drawing pads, or was it the other way around?” Great, Eunjin’s going to be a wonderful teacher with that memory of hers. She raised her shoulders before dropping them in defeat, her dark eyes scanning through the open cardboard box which contained the materials bought from the local store. Thankfully the preschool classes didn’t start in another hour, which gave Eunjin enough time to return the items if they weren’t what Luhan asked for.

She released a quiet sigh before entering the classroom. Her small feet nearly stepped over a wooden toy block, causing her to stumble slightly. It was a miracle she didn’t fall over with the box full of supplies. (Which happens quite often.) Eunjin cleared her throat after dropping off the box in front of Luhan, still embarrassed about her little ‘show’. “Here’s what you asked for, sunbaenim!”

most think that preschool teachers are nothing but glorified babysitters. it’s so much more than that -- minds begin their molding process at a very young age. preschool teachers have the responsibility to start this process, to mold the minds of future generations and help those generations achieve greatness and, hopefully, imbed in them the drive to change this world for the better. 

as such, han admires and appreciates each and every single student that sets out to be a teacher. eunjin is a good example of what a teacher needs to be -- kind, patient and hardworking. even if she’s forgetful some days. thankfully, today’s not one of those days.

han offers eunjin a kind, reassuring smile, taking the box and inspecting the supplies. “thank you, eunjin. exactly what i asked for. ready for the start of a new week?”

“ah--- thank you.” there’s a sheepish smile on his lips as he takes the piece of clothing from the back of his chair. the library had turned up their a/c to such a high temperature that han was forced to take his sweater off -- sweater which he’d almost left behind. finding new ways to entertain kids with only books can be pretty exhausting, and frustrating.

“i’d forget my head if it wasn’t attached to my neck.”

the cold has been impossible lately, biting at the skin with no mercy. it’s dangerous in this time of the year, especially for the children. hence why he can’t really bring himself to say no when he looks at the sight of a trembling minjun. he offers a kind smile to sojin.

“of course. but it’ll be our secret, yeah? if the school finds out i’m giving away blankets, i’ll be in big trouble.”

the third ambush appears in the midst of darkness and stargazing in a calm night, a rare occurrence for the pair. the air is cold and they share warmth beneath a snug blanket. han stares at the starry sky and then at chris, alabaster skin gleaming gently under the moonlight. there’s a pink tint to his cheeks and nose and the thought that it’s endearing crosses han’s mind.

it’s not fair. it’s really not fair. not as dark brown eyes look at him so meaningfully, not as gentle hands caress his own, not as chris whispers words void of dishonesty. for once, chris is patient, cradling his damaged hand with such care that han almost believes it.

“no.” it’s a soft breath, his answer. they stare once more at the luminous sky, hearts beating, steady and strong in their ribcages. “no.”

in the midst of resentment and repressed emotions, the question feels like an ambush. chris knows that han despises everything they represent. the dangerous temptation, the constant lies and the bitterness that resides at the very core of their relationship. 

it’s not fair. it’s really not fair. not that along with the dangerous temptation, he feels the most alive. not that along with the constant lies, he’s more true to himself than he ever was. not that along with the bitterness, he feels an immense longing for the older male. chris is growing impatient, han knows this. he feels it in the way that fingernails dig into his jaw, in the way that fingers sink into his waist, in the way chris’ stare intensifies, locking their gazes.

“no, i don’t,” he murmurs those words between soft inhales, between silent tears that glide down his cheeks, as chris’ grip on his jaw tightens. “and i never will.”

in the midst of warmth and soft touches, the question feels like an ambush. chris knows that han is at his mercy when fingertips graze along his thighs, his stomach, his neck. skin sensitive, breath short, he’s left speechless. gazes cross and he’s staring at intense brown eyes.

it’s not fair. it’s really not fair. not as chris traps him, securing his hands against the mattress, not as chris’ lips ignite every expanse of his skin, mouthing hollow promises, not as chris sheds every tier of his being, one by one. chris is growing impatient, han knows this. he feels it in the way that fingernails dig into his skin, in the way that teeth leave marks,  in the way chris pummels harder, bruising his flesh.

“no! i– i don’t!” han’s response comes between ragged inhales, between tears that slither down his face, as chris’ grip on his hands tightens. “and i never will–”

“there’s nothing wrong with being wrong. it’s from mistakes that human beings learn.” han stares at the large body of water in front of the two, a kind smile adorning his lips as he directs his gaze to the smaller girl. 

“you’ll get over your fears, eventually. there isn’t a need to force it, you’ll see. god does not give us obstacles we can’t surpass.” a gentle hand rests on the girl’s shoulder, offering support, a friendship, a pillar to lean on.

“mother, why do we pray to a god?” ; “why do you ask, my child?” “father said i will regret it if i don’t ask for god’s forgiveness.” her mother tugs the clueless child closer, presses a tender kiss to her forehead. “do as he says.”

she’s all fickle fierceness and delicate fragility, somewhere in the stage betwen reckless youth and mature womanhood. the thing about growing up too quickly is that you never quite know if you’re there already because you’re young and still naive and if you don’t have to believe in the cruelty of the world, you’ll find inclined to believe in the good instead. hyemi observes her fingernails, the way her skin stretches and falls back into place when she begins to waggle her fingers. the way the cold leaves behind an imprint of red to represent the irritation of something so humanly beautiful.

“do as he says,” one of her sisters begs. the second youngest of the four daughters remains silent, jaw tightly clenched, eyes brimming with tears and lips pressed together as though she fears the moment where a sound might escape her. it’ll aggravate him, she knows. his punishments will get worse. “he’s going to beat her to death, momma. you have to do something about it,” another sister begs fervently while trying to keep the fear from eating her heart altogether. mother looks away.

hyemi doesn’t remember a lot about her childhood but she has a tendency to keep the good things in mind. voices, she can associate them with colours. scents, she can associate with a feeling. the truth is, she doesn’t remember anything at all, the faces of her parents seem but a memory of another lifetime. her sisters remain a mystery to her altogether; has she truly grown up with blood related siblings underneath a roof that threatened to suffocate them one by one? “i’d never thought i’d meet someone from my hometown again. not after so long, at least.”

she gives an uncertain smile as she looks at the other in front of her. a memory pushes itself back to the surface, but it’s split in bits and pieces and she doesn’t quite know what to make of it.

“are you okay down there?” “please let me out, please please please, i promise i’ll ask for god’s forgiveness.”

the smile vanishes and she averts her gaze. “thank you for what you did back… there.” he hopes she knows. she can only pray he will.

“mother, she’s weird.” 

“han! that’s not nice!” the petite frowns, mind too young to comprehend the somber look on the little girl’s eyes whenever they attended mass together. 

“but she is...” a mumble he hopes his mother doesn’t hear.

he’s all soft tones and unwavering calm, a perfect example of what he should be, of what he’s expected to be, ever since he was a child. growing up he’d been so eager to please his parents, follow their every word, only to end up where he is now -- lying with all his teeth, to his parents, to god and to himself. 

his childhood had been pretty uneventful. the only thing he was ever excited about was playing the guitar and the church camps, where he could show off his acquired ‘skills’ as a guitar player. besides that, he doesn’t recall much else. he remembers that one weird girl as if it was yesterday, however. remembers her pleas and promises of repentance. 

“are you okay down there?”

“please let me out, please please please, i promise i’ll ask for god’s forgiveness.”

“... you’re really weird, you know? what are you doing down there, anyway?” the child says that but helps as per request of the little girl. her eyes are wide and... somber. a word he doesn’t understand, not in a world filled with god’s love. not his world.

"i was thinking the same. it seems like a lifetime ago.” she’s matured greatly since the last time he saw her. given that they were both still young then, her more than him, but she couldn’t be more than twenty years old now. still too young to look so... bound to this life. han absentmindedly massages his right hand, it itches, it hurts -- thinking about a past that is long, long gone, so far from the future he thought he’d be living. his right hand rests, limp, on his lap and he covers it, shame clawing at every fiber of his being.

“it’s nothing to thank me for, it was the right thing to do, afterall. what would my parents say if i let a little girl locked up inside the church?” han offers a faint smile, hopes his words aren’t an unpleasant trip down memory lane.
