The lesson Vox learns from "there are no friends" is that Alastor didn't like him for himself. That Alastor liked him becuase they where "Almost equals" and that him being "pathetic" "ruined it". If he wants Alastor back he needs to prove that he isn't "pathetic" and he thinks that if he proves he's more powerful than Alastor then he'd look at him like that agin.

The way so many people don't get this when it's literally the main thing still driving them apart and the main focus all of season 2 tried to nail down is driving me insane. Vox is becoming worse because he's trying to put himself above everyone else including Valentino and Velvette in the hopes he will prove Aalstor wrong for doubting him. This tendency is foreshadowed even in Once we get up there when he says "to everyone who doubted me your doubting days are done" during which he sings about being god and ruling the world. Alastor in turn, is only getting more and more reassured that he did the right thing by cutting Vox off the first time as he watches Vox discard anything and everyone to rise to the top. Alastor calls him "broken from the start" because Vox's dissatisfaction doesn't stem from an insatiable greed for more, but from a crippling inability to find worth in himself as a person. He doesn't know how to recognize himself as someone worthy so he finds value in himself through what he can DO instead of who he IS. And Alastor knows this. He knows Vox better than Vox knows himself.
