Impulse incarnate. Acts when he wants to and disregards authority. If he thinks it's a good idea, he'll do it. Even if he knows it isn't.

A man set up for failure - he's the son of a man who died honorably saving his crew, even though he only had command for less than thirty minutes. Now he's just trying to live for himself after years of being nothing but a shadow of his father. He's still not sure who he really is.

Wears his heart on his sleeve, and it's quite easy to win it. He flirts too much for his own good, but it never goes anywhere past the bedroom.

His last comment made Snow muffled a laugh behind her hand. She couldn't imagine a squirrel hopped up on any kind of sugar or caffeine. Why, that seemed like a recipe for disaster... " Mmm, no, I don't believe they do ! By golly their hearts already race as is ! "

The princess tittered, clasping her hands behind her back. Now she just had to remember what direction the cafe in question actually was in...

JIM LIFTS HIS SHOULDERS INTO A SHRUG , a dumb grin on his face. So much for that idea. But , hey. You never know. Maybe one of these days he'll walk into a coffee shop and see a squirrel with a Cappuccino. ❛ Nuts , then. Or maybe birdseed ? ❜ To be fair , he's sure they'd eat just about anything they could get their paws on.

THERE'S A MOMENT OF HESITATION BEFORE he sweeps his arm forward as if to say " lead the way. " ❛ If you're really sure , then the help would be appreciated. You sure there isn't anything I can do to pay you back ? You don’t even want a pastry or something while we're there ? ❜

Sitting is, maybe the wrong word for what Elijah was doing. Lounging maybe, tuning his lute... though he did straighten himself out once the door opened, setting the instrument on his lap. " Well hello- "

Blonde, kinda dog looking ? The bard's heard Leonard complain ( or maybe it was raving ? Who knows ) about this guy before. He immediately stood up and left his lute in his place, maneuvering around the couch and resting one hand on his hip, the other extended out.

" Leo lives here yeah, though he spends every possible hour at the clinic so it's usually just me by my lonesome ! Youuu- " Elijah circled his finger towards Jim, a grin on his face. " Must be Jim. Can't think of anyone else that the man knows AND trusts enough to let into the apartment. "

JIM LEANS AGAINST THE APARTMENT'S DOOR FRAME , eyeing the man as he stands up from where he was lounging on the couch. An eyebrow raises at him curiously. Spending all of his time at the clinic , huh ? Now that sounds like Bones. Even when he's not on the Enterprise he still can't help but busy himself with medical work.

❛ SO YOU'VE HEARD ABOUT ME , HUH ? ❜ He asks with a laugh. ❛ I would ask if he's said good things , but I know the answer to that question already. ❜ Absolutely not. There's a pause as he looks left and right. The place isn't much different from his Condo. Still bigger than their quarters back on the Enterprise. ❛ If Bones isn't here , guess it's just you and me , then. Unless you want me to come back later. ❜

STARGAZING IS ONE OF JIM'S FAVORITE ACTIVITIES. Maybe it's because of how homesick he is , and the closest thing to home he ever got was when he was among the stars , but he could spend hours looking up at the dark sky above. The water of Styx is a place he had yet to visit before tonight , but the way the star - filled sky reflects off of the still pool is the only convincing he needed to come back again. As he looks up at the sky , however , a light from the corner of his eye catches his attention enough to pry his gaze away from the stars.

WHAT HE SEES WHEN HE LOOKS OVER is unlike anything he could have possibly expected. Long , flowing hair that looks like the universe itself was somehow trapped in it , and if he looks close enough , stars that move within it. Not only that , but she was glowing. Literally glowing. The source of the light wasn't a flashlight , or perhaps her phone , but no. It was just her.

AFTER WHAT SEEMS LIKE AN ETERNITY , Jim awkwardly clears his throat and looks away. Staring isn't very becoming , is it ? She's certainly not human , that's for sure . . but she's unlike any alien the Federation knows of. ❛ I came here to stargaze. ❜ He finally says softly. ❛ Sorry , I know I was staring at the wrong ones. I just - you're - ❜ The more he tries to explain himself , the weaker his excuses get. Instead , he settles on closing his mouth and wordlessly looking up at the sky again.

LIKE THAT'S NOT BAD ENOUGH ALREADY. At least there's a Jim-shaped buffer here, though he's not sure if he'd wind up feeling better or worse if they both crash into somebody.

"I might." It is a slightly-murderous threat. "Only be fair of me to keep you on your toes for once," instead of the other way around. His free arm pinwheels as he finds his center of balance - a tricky thing, when he's so certain his feet will go flying out from under him any second now - and the other still clings to Jim.

"I do walk leaning forward. I've got places to be," and half the time he's running because Starfleet is nothing if not a test of his endurance, all day every day. But he straightens his back enough to look like a slightly more put-together human being rather than a horse who's forgotten how to use its legs. "And I'm relaxed. I am. This is relaxing. You know, where I grew up we used to stay away from the water in the winter, and that always seemed plenty fun to me."

THERE'S A LAUGH THAT COMES OUT OF HIM at the comment. If it was anyone else , Jim maybe would've taken the threat seriously. But Bones ? Even if he wanted to ( and there was no doubt in his mind that he wanted to ) there was no way in hell he would purposefully cause them both to fall. Not when he was just complaining about the hypothetical surgery they would both need.

❛ JESUS. YOU'RE GOING TO HIT SOMEONE before you end up actually falling. ❜ Flailing your arm around is definitely the best way to keep stable. It's better than , you know , actually taking the advice of the guy trying to help you. But what does Jim know ?

HE ROLLS HIS EYES SKYWARD. He would facepalm , but if he lets go of Bones he fears they will both end up face down on the ice. ❛ Yeah , well , you need to work on that , too. ❜ Jim watches as he straightens himself up , before raising an eyebrow at him. ❛ Y'know , I don't think I ever have seen you relaxed. Even three drinks in you can still find something to be stressed about. ❜

JIM RECEIVES AN ABSOLUTELY FED-UP LOOK. He's not being any kind of way - except for rational, maybe. Or at least he's trying to be. Kirk drags him into a lot of irrationally bad ideas, some worse than others. This is pretty low on the list, all things considered. "I've fully got no idea what in the hell could possibly make you think that," that Leonard's balance could have even remotely improved since the last time around ( they'd spent a lot of winters in California and even more up in space where they only ran into naturally-occurring ice every once in a while; obviously Jim has dragged him into holodeck-provided snow once or twice and it's never ended well ), that is. "But if you're gonna be fool enough to make a promise about it, well, then I'll just have to hold you to it."

But then he says that very often and only drags Jim through a guilt trip over the things that don't really matter - Jim has never once broken a promise that did matter, not by Leonard's measurements. Whether not getting his legs busted by this damn foolish venture matters enough to qualify is up for debate.

"Oh, yeah, because the only thing I love more than performing surgery on myself is performing surgery on both of us. You know me so well." But he can't really effectively dig his heels in even if he wanted to and he's already come this far, even if the first uncertain step onto the ice nearly does end with both of them flat on their asses ( clawing like a drowning cat at Jim does assist greatly with maintaining his balance ). "Jesus. There's a trick to this, right?" Pizza, french fry... that might be skiing. "You seriously used do this for fun?"

IT'S A LOOK THAT HE KNOWS FAR TOO WELL. It's that look that Bones gives him when he wants to say damn it , Jim without actually saying a word. It's like he's only got a limited number of them that he's saving for more important occasions , so he has to ration them out and settle for glaring daggers at him instead. ❛ For one , it's a public rink. Worst you can do is run into someone. ❜ Or have someone run into you. And Jim knows full well they're not going to be going fast enough for the former to matter. The latter ? Well . . that one he's not so sure of. ❛ I wouldn't promise anything if I didn't expect you to. ❜

❛ WE WON'T NEED SURGERY , BONES , unless you really intend on screwing up that bad. ❜ There was a part of him that genuinely thought the guy was just exaggerating , but as he immediately almost topples Jim over by virtue of using him as support - he's starting to slightly regret this. But admitting that to Bones would be like a death sentence. ❛ Well , first thing you gotta do is stand up straight. ❜ A hand still rests firmly on the other man's arm to keep him from immediately eating shit. ❛ You don't walk leaning forward , so you can't skate like that either. Just relax , alright ? I've got you. ❜

HE'LL NEVER KNOW WHY HE LETS HIMSELF GET TALKED INTO SHIT LIKE THIS. They're just asking for a sprained ankle, a broken bone. The only small mercy is that it's an artificial rink - no way on god's green earth he's stepping foot onto a frozen pond or some such nonsense - but even then, McCoy is deliberately slow in tying ( and then re-tying ) his skates, looking for all the world like a man being sentenced to death.

"Funny how you're always saying that," or at least something to that effect. Usually it'll be fun, or, similarly, it'll be fine, and it is never fun nor fine. So yeah, he has no doubt this won't be easy, either. "And yet it never is." But he clasps Jim's hand with a sigh anyhow, hauling himself up to his feet and clinging with a death grip onto his arm, terror barely concealed within his eyes at the first wobbly, shuffling step.

"No— no, no no, hold on. Jim, I can't even stand in these things, I'm gonna bust my ass out there!"

THE WIDE , SHIT - EATING GRIN ON JIM'S FACE says everything Bones needs to know. He knows full well that it's ( almost ) impossible for the Doctor to say no to him. Granted , things are a little different now that he's technically not required by Starfleet regulations to follow his orders : he could've said no if he really wanted to. And yet here he is. Even though he's taken twenty minutes just to get his skates on to buy himself some time , he wasn't forced to come. But he is going to be forced to skate since he did show up.

❛ DON'T BE THAT WAY. ❜ It's just ice skating. An activity made specially for an Iowa boy such as himself. Yet again , Bones doesn't even like winter in the holodeck. So his reluctance shouldn't really come as a surprise. ❛ It'll be different this time. I promise. ❜ It takes all of his effort to bite back his laughter as McCoy takes a step forward.

HIS PLEAS ARE MET WITH A SHAKE OF HIS HEAD as he continues to coax him towards the ice. ❛ You're not gonna bust your ass , Bones. I'll be right there the entire time. And if for some reason you do fall , you'll probably end up taking both of us with you. That'll cheer you up. ❜

"I DON'T WANT TO BE HERE."

It's always fucking something. People vanishing right off the goddamn street, sure, why not. Leonard spends the entire walk home doing a piss-poor job of tamping down an anxiety attack - god forbid he's next, if he's getting out of this place it'll be on his own goddamn accord thank you very much - kicks open the apartment door like a man being pursued by death itself, and chucks his bag against the wall, pacing. His roommate has been around long enough now to have seen Leonard's more unsavory meltdowns, so that's... fine, he no longer feels shame in that regard, and Jim is... Jim ( and of fucking course he's hanging around Leonard's apartment while he's at work, why wouldn't he be ).

"I'm serious, we don't have enough alcohol to get me through whatever the hell is going on out there," he jabs a finger towards the window and the city that has wronged him, "this time. Can't we rent out a bar or something? A hotel with a bar, maybe? I feel like I'm going crazy. This city's driving me to drink."

Jim barely looks up from his place lounging on Bones' couch - nothing like crashing at your friend's apartment when his roommate also happens to be there. The guy's chill enough , and unlike Bones , has a diet that consists of more than just shitty beer and a prayer. Halfway through his rant , Jim finally throws his legs over the side of the couch and sits up.

❛ I'm pretty sure you don't need anything to drive you to drink. ❜ Although the prospect of renting out a bar does sound appealing. He thinks on it for a second. ❛ If shit really is going sideways , why don't we go to a hotel or something ? Plenty of space , usually have a restaurant and a bar. And we can meet up with anyone else there. ❜ He's not sure to what extent this is , but Bones is known to exaggerate. So unless he walks out there and buildings are on fire or something , then he's not too worried about it.

He'd heard the footsteps outside and thought nothing of it - there's other people living here, after all - when they stop outside of his door and start messing with his lock, that's when it becomes a problem. He wastes little time grabbing a knife from the kitchen and situating himself on the couch, tucking it carefully into the cushions so he could reach it, but so it wouldn't be seen. In theory, he knows there's multiple rooms, but he hasn't heard that anyone would be taking up occupancy in one of them, and as a baseline he doesn't trust strangers. Or most other people, actually.

He attempts to look casual as possible, but it's obvious how warily he's eying him over as he enters.

"Astarion. It's a pleasure. So, we'll be sharing, then? And here I was thinking I'd have the whole place to myself.. oh well."

Jim's attention is more on the contents of the condo than the other man within it. Figures that they wouldn't even give them their own houses - have to share with the others dragged here against their will. Still , he slows to a stop in the doorway as he's eyed warily by his new roommate , before letting out a soft chuckle.

❛ Hey , I've got a friend that I can probably stay with if you want the privacy that bad. ❜ He'd have to bribe him , but luckily Bones isn't really that hard to persuade if you pay the right price. ❛ I'd have to ask his roommates too , though. Hate to go from one place unannounced to another. ❜

After a moment , he finally walks past the couch and makes his way over to the kitchen. He opens every cabinet and drawer , getting a good idea of the amenities they've been given. He glances back at where the other man is seated.

❛ If I had known I had roommates , I would've brought a drink or something as a peace offering. ❜

Jim looks at the screens , and then at the glass that sits behind them. It reminds him of the replicators back on the Enterprise - only you can see the dough actually be baked and decorated in front of you. He inputs his cookie design into the screen , peering behind it to see the cookie be made in real time. There's an impressed smile as he's presented with his creation : a man with a blue shirt , brown hair and angry frown.

He looks at his newly made Gingerbread Bones , before glancing at the red haired woman standing at a screen next to him. ❛ You know , ❜ He starts , lifting his cookie up and gesturing vaguely at the machine. ❛ They have this thing for making Gingerbread Men , but what about Gingerbread Houses ? Do they even have Gingerbread Houses here ? I mean , what happened to decorating the cookies with your hands ? ❜ Granted , he's sure his Gingerbread Bones would look less like Bones and more like a mess of frosting if he had decorated it . . but that's what makes it fun ! ❛ I'd say I'd try , but I don't know the first thing about baking cookies. Let alone making a house out of them. ❜

Aurora Borealis is something Jim had heard of from his days on Earth , but growing up in Iowa never gave him the chance to truly experience it. And , when he moved to Tarsus . . well , they never had it there , either. It's beautiful. Greens , blues , and purples illuminate his surroundings , dousing him with their light. There's a part of him that wishes that his crew could've been here to witness it with him. He knows they're fine without him , Spock's more of a capable Captain than he could ever hope to be. He takes a deep breath in , looking down for a moment. God , he needs a drink. Do they even serve alcohol here ?

He walks up to the stand that's selling hot chocolate. That's good enough , he supposes. A warm drink , a light show . . it would be perfect if he didn't have to be alone with his thoughts. He looks around at the various attendees , eyes settling on another stranger who just happens to be here alone. ❛ Want a drink ? They've got cider . . hot chocolate . . Don't worry about the dust , I'll cover it. ❜

❛ C'mon , Bones ! ❜ Jim stands after lacing up his skates , extending a hand to help the man get his balance. One of the things he missed the most about Iowa winters was the chance to skate on a frozen lake. He knows the doctor was far more skeptical of it all , being a Georgia boy and all , but it was a winter activity that he couldn't miss out on. And he certainly wasn't going to do it alone.
