Kita smiled softly walking closer toward the girl with his hands stuffed shyly in his pockets as he thought to himself how cute she looked every time he saw her. “I guess they have.” He chuckled walking comfortably next to her side. “Uh. Good question.” He glanced around looking at all the various rides the carnival had to offer. If he was honest with himself he wasn’t sure where to start since it all appeared to be overwhelmingly fun. “We could do bumper cars, the roller coaster, or maybe the haunted ride?” He suggested with a shrug. “I don’t care what we do as long as I get to hang out with you.” He nudged her with a smile. “I mean it as cheesy as it sounds.”

aspen cut him a look. eyes narrowing with all the disappointment she could muster. “that was miserably cheesy.” she half laugh, half scolded as she started to walk forward towards the festivities. “i dunno.” she hummed as she mulled the options over. “maybe we can do bumper cars, roller coaster, then haunted? just because i actually get fucking freaked out with haunted stuff so i might as well save that as a finale right?” she laughed before nudging into him. “what do you think? sound like a plan?” she walked past a food stand that smelled undeniably good. “we should also add getting food somewhere in the agenda as well.”

aspen chewed on her bottom lip as she looked over the flashing lights and smiling faces within the crowd. she was actually early. well, early for meeting kita. their first date had gone well a couple weeks ago. she was kind of excited to see where this was going to go. there were a lot of uncertainties that she wanted to figure out; maybe tonight she’d get more answers. 

“hey,” she smiled as she saw the shifter approach. “tables have to turn now, huh?” the huntress teased about being the early one this time around. “i’ve already got tickets. where should we start?” she asked curiously as she started to walk with the flow of the crowd, shoulders bumping with his.

“Ah,” The sound from him was drawn out, a very deliberate vowel. It took up a space that otherwise would have been an awkward silence between them, and he is proud that he could ebb away the weirdness for at least a moment. But the moment passed and he found that he was having trouble how to continue. Should he pry? Should he… 

He licked his lips nervously, absently. “Must be some dangerous work.” He commented coolly, as if there would be no reason for a hunter to watch he, himself. “Though, I am glad for it,” He lied, the small white kind that hurts no one but the integrity of his words. “It keeps places like this safe. Which, we all need, considering.” A hunter….

A hunter that was notably shaken-up, notably trying to save herself. He almost felt sorry, but he had done nothing to warrant such a reaction. “Must be a lot of supers in this complex, that I didn’t even realize.” 

she cut him a look when he said something about being glad for it. there was no one that was glad for it. she wasn’t even glad that hunters ran this town. “really?” she asked incredulously, not believing that statement for a second. “that makes one of us. i can even admit the shittiness of it.”

“but, uh, yeah. this complex in particular is really filled with almost exclusively supers.” she nodded. she wasn’t really supposed to admit that, but he was right. there was no reason to deny it. she just hoped that it wouldn’t find a way to bite her later. the hunters in the town were so particular. maybe she should do some damage control. “of course, if another hunter asks, you don’t know that and if you do you didn’t hear it from me.”

just sharing that ridiculous and almost embarrassing story took her back to her mid teen days. she got up to way too much that her parents didn’t know of. thank god. who knows how much worse her younger brother or sister could of been if they reached the age of 15-16. especially with her younger sister she did wonder what they would be like now if they never died; even what she would be like. katherine definitely wouldn’t be this type of person or at this place. katherine laughing at herself again and shrugged. “well, at the time it was a good idea and anything is comfortable in that state. in the morning it was a different story completely.” thank god those days were behind her; she wouldn’t dream of doing something so stupid now, she hoped anyway. “you’re nineteen not ninety. you still got time to do stupid shit.” at nineteen just a few years ago katherine wished she still had that type of ‘fun’. instead she was doing what she does now just not in this town. she did things no late teen should do. smiled katherine looked over to her. “what is a crazy thing you’ve wanted to do?”

“i know, but i kinda feel ninety. i’m not out doing fun things like being nineteen. i’m out working… kinda.” she should be walking around and making sure everything okay throughout the town. she figured that it was though. there was never really anything happening at this hour. “honestly i don’t even know where to start,” she admitted. “did you know i only broke one rule that my dad set? my dad sent me to for training and to live alone in this family cabin for a couple years. which was fine, but i snuck my boyfriend into the cabin and lived with him for like, a full year before he found out.” saying it aloud reminded her of how stupid it was. aspen shook her head. “it’s ridiculous. but at least when i did break the rules i really made it count.” she softly laughed. “so yeah, i don’t know where to go from there with my any kind of fun rebellion like that. when you start from the top where do you go?”

after just finishing a shift, aspen took it upon herself to walk around. she needed to clear her head. not that a whole lot had been circulating. that was the problem. she needed to circulate her thoughts, get something moving. autopilot was a lonely place sometimes. she moved through the park, but stopped for a moment when she saw something, well, strange. there was a woman sleeping on a bench. she looked totally at peace too. it was strange because asteria didn’t have many issues with homelessness. the cost of living was dirt cheap from being far enough from seattle to be it’s own thing. 

“hey-” she hesitated. she didn’t want to wake a slumbering stranger, but she wanted to make sure that she had somewhere to sleep. she moved her hand gently to her shoulder in hopes that it’d help aide her away with little  “hey, are you alright?”

“A hunter?” Kita glanced up at her so he could get a better picture of her as one. She didn’t appear to be like the hard boiled and tough guy kind of hunter he usually ran into in this town. Aspen was really sweet and helpful. Maybe she was different from the rest. It break his heart if she wasn’t. “Wow. That’s Crazy you don’t seem like one.” He smiled letting loose of her hand as he went to find the right sized ball. “Ah yeah sometimes but it gives me something to do.” He shrugged simply. “I’d rather be doing something than nothing ya know?” He smiled meeting her gaze. He felt less nervous the more time he’s spent around her. Aspen made him feel comfortable in his own skin. “So, sorry to bring up the whole hunting thing again, but I’m guessing you know all about the supers in this town. Does that mean you know about me?”

you don’t seem like one. she smiled and nodded her head. “yeah, i get that a lot.” she nodded with a half smile. aspen knew all the hunter questions were going to come up here. and she couldn’t really blame him for feeling that way. she hoped that she’d be able to sway the conversation elsewhere at some points. she was more interested in learning more about him. “i mean, i know you’re a super, but i try to make an effort to not read the files of people unless i have to.” she explained. “besides, why would i ruin the surprise? it wouldn’t be a fun date if i knew everything about you.” she took her bowling ball and walked backwards with a playful smile as she spoke as she made her way to their lane. she typed in her name under her player number then moved over so her date could do the same. “so, to start. when’s your birthday? your zodiac? not that i care about all of that at all. i don’t keep up with them or what they mean. it’s a cool conversation though.”

katherine hadn’t discussed too much her childhood or teenage years with many people and if she did it wasn’t about the subject of what mischievous things she got up to. she wondered if everyone just saw hunters as these uptight people who follow all the rules. that wasn’t the case with katherine or many she had crossed paths with in the past. she still wasn’t too sure about the others here. she wasn’t 100% certain why they came here; whatever reason. “um…” katherine thought back to that very eventful night, trying to piece things together. she was sixteen and not exactly as tolerate to alcohol to how she is now. “i know it was a friends birthday party and we had it outside in some remote location in the woods away from people.” katherine flicked her eyes onto the water trying to focus on remembering how she ended up where she did on that morning. the dumb idea suddenly clicked in katherines head. “oh my god. we watched that film. the hunger games a couple days before and we thought it would be a great idea to see who could climb a tree the highest like that girl character.” katherine laughed slightly at herself. “i used this kinda tall cut down tree to get up high on the tree next to it. after i did so i was too scared to jump back down so i decided to sleep up there and i did.” katherine shook her head and laughed again at her own dumb mistakes. “i think one of my friends ended up spraining their ankle that night.”

aspen enjoyed hearing the story. it actually seemed like some of the crazy teenage stories that you would read or hear about. she never had anything like that growing up, but it felt fun to hear about it “oh my god.” she laughed then shook her head ."i don’t know how easy it is to sleep in a tree trunk, but if you were that drunk i’m guessing you were undisturbed.” part of her wished she had crazy stories like that, but her father was far too strict when she was a teenager to allow anything like hat to happen. it felt like she missed out on a lot. she grew up too fast. “i wish i had experiences liek that.” she laughed. “i fee like an old lady in a nineteen year old’s body sometimes.” she admitted. “like i feel like i’ve done basically nothing cool before.” aspen whined as she looked off. “i do like living through your past experiences though. it

“uh, yeah.” she nodded her head. she felt nervous. he was clearly onto her. fuck, what was she supposed to do? “i don’t believe so. i’m miserable about actually going and getting trims done.”

she felt cornered. dammit. she had to come clean, at least partly. “i am a hunter though. i spend a lot of my time patrolling and walking around the town.” she of course didn’t admit that some days she was assigned to specifically watch him.

“Jeez 2 am in the freaking morning to 10 am?” Kita gasped in utter shock. “Are you like one of those hotel guards patrolling the grounds?” The shifter asked curiously lifting himself from up off the bench as he turned to her with a smile. The boy kindly offered out his hand to help Aspen, but then he boldly intertwined his lengthy fingers with her more slender ones as he walked them over to their bowling lane. “Ah it was my day off at the Bookstore today, but Mom needed help with the bakery today.” He sighed looking over to meet her gaze. Her light brown hues making his heart beat a little faster. “So nothing extraordinary to report sadly. Except well other than hanging out with you now.”

at the feeling of the boy’s bold fingers lacing with her own, aspen’s cheeks flushed. she tried to act natural, like it didn’t make her heart nearly burst from flutters. “no, no hotel for me. i wish though, that’d probably be nicer. “she sighed with a shrug. “uh, no i’m a hunter.” she explained feeling even more nervous than she was previously. she hoped his reaction would be better than most in this town. “i’m glad that you at least had some sort of day off from at least one of them.” she smiled to him. “does it get exhausting bouncing back and forth?” the hunter asked as she started looking over the selection of bowling balls before picking a blue and white one that seemed to be a good size.

tonight tended to always be a night that katherine would end up consuming a bit too much alcohol and it would happen again another four nights of the year also. it was lucky that she had left the bar when she did and finished what she had on her right now so she wasn’t a mess in front of a fellow hunter. katherine perked her eyebrows up at aspens question that she wasn’t expecting. there were more cases of being too drunk to not remember a night than katherine cared to admit. her teenage years when she couldn’t handle her booze was full of them. “well…” she was now searching in her mind for a story that she could actually vaguely remember and a good one instead of an embarrassing one. when one popped into her head katherine smirked slightly and covered her mouth. “i’m afraid you’ll never look at me the same way.” bringing her hand back down katherine gave her one insight to her some of her stories. “i have sometimes woken up in strange places. no like someones bed, but…more like a tree trunk.” 

aspen was hoping that he preoccupied the other girl’s mind enough to not think on what had been bothering her when aspen had first encountered her. she wished she had more information; a better understanding on how to help. what she had been doing seemed to be helping enough, the hunter was now just hoping that she was able to keep it up.“a tree trunk?” she laughed out, a wide amused smile over her moth. “you don’t remember anything from that?” she asked with some hopefulness on her voice.”please tell me you do. because i need a story for this.”

aspen felt caught. frozen in a friendly confrontation even.“no, i don’t believe that we have.” she shook her head. “small town though. i’m sure we’ve bumped into each other at some point.” 

she wasn’t doing so great. she didn’t know how in the hell she was supposed to recover this. a lot of the times hunters were open and honest about to the people she was assigned to. she was even on that level with some of hers, but there was the undeniable nervousness that demons gave her. “i’m aspen, though.” she figured that it was the best thing that she could do to try and make it less weird, and hopefully less obvious. “what’s your name?”

aspen was fairly open minded. she supported more pro-supernatural points, than pro-hunter points by far. she didn’t believe in micro chipping wolves, or high end surveillance for supers that hadn’t done anything wrong. those were things she was willing to stand for. however the only species that had put an uneasy tone to her tongue and a chill down her spine were demons. she had never truly met one. she had mostly just read traumatizing files on the travesties that some had done. so it came as no surprise that she had felt uneasy monitoring feng su. she had started to type her final observation on in her phone before heading home before she had head actual conversation thrown to her.

shit. 

this is what was hard about small towns. everyone was too recognizable. it was hard to surveillance without larger crowds to hide in. aspen swallowed the nervous lump in her throat. “no, not lost.” she shook her head. “just about to meet my friend at her apartment is all. she’s two floors up.” she answered the question surprisingly smoothly. she felt so thankful that the elevator was conveniently to her side.

He was early. Too early. Kita was a person who considered to keep the promises he made to a fault. This was his first date since the break off with Rowan and admittedly he was nervous that it was possible he could royally screw things up with this girl. She was on his mind ever since their encounter on the street just only a few days prior. Something about the charisma she delivered kept drawing Kita in closer to Aspen. Her presence merely made him forget his heartache over his once love. He’d hoped after tonight that they could continue these dates getting to know each other more. He’d always been eager to learn more about those who peaked his interest.

Through all the faces in the crowd Kita could feel his lips spread into a wide excited smile.Maybe a little too excited. She looked gorgeous the was the dimming sunlight flowed through her golden brown hair and her smile as she approached him made his heart flutter. “You? Late? Nah… well maybe.” He chuckled. “Well lets see how the rest of the night goes and then I can tell you later.” He smiled opening the door for her and followed her inside. “I gotta warn you I’m pretty crappy at bowling. My sister kicks my ass every time so this might be an easy win for you.” He nudged her arm going to pay the guy for their night of fun. He requested his size shoe and waited for her to get her size. Taking a seat he looked up to her as he started to take off his shoes. “So? How was your work day? give me all the deets.”

“don’t try and excuse me for my shittiness. i can take the critique.” the hunter teased as she walked with him into the building. he looked nice, and it made aspen feel sick. he was cute, and funny, and his mom owned a cute bakery that made the best cake she had tasted in her entire fucking life. of course she felt disgustingly nervous. aspen took the shoes and started to head to their lane to bowl in as she started to to tie then on her feet she looked up to him at his question about work.

"that's right, the deets." she could tell that he wasn't human. she just didn't know what he was or his feelings towards hunters. she was worried that might break all of this. "well, I went in at 2 am. I walked around town for about 8 hours, patrolling," she was hoping that saying that was clear enough. "then I went home, went to bed, and now I'm here." she grinned. “absolutely enthralling, i know.” the huntress teased as she looked over the hideous shoes on her feet. "and what about your day?" she asked curiously. "anything extraordinary happen?"

he nodded softly at her condolences to his axed relationship. the thought that he was talking to her about it, once the subject of an argument or two between then, was a bit odd. but the thought that they now shared something in common was a bit of a comfort. they’d both loved and lost oliver. “it’s okay,” he chuckled, waving away her concern. maybe he was still sore over it, but it was his decision to begin with, and talking about it as the past helped him to know that that’s where it belonged. “you’re not responsible, so don’t worry about that. it was my own choice to end things. i just think he’s better off this way, y’know? he can be happy… as for being friends, well, that’s a little more complicated,” he admitted, turning down a path that led to a small, long-abandoned children’s playground. a rusted chain-link swing set remained in tact. his destination for the night. “i’d like to be friends with him… maybe. i don’t know. we kinda ended on a sour note.” he bit the inside of his cheek, walking over to one of the swings and settling down onto it.

aspen pressed her lips together, and nodded. even though he tried to convince her otherwise, she still felt guilty. she felt like she owed asher a lot."yeah," aspen nodded as he explained that was complicated between him and oliver. she knew nothing about their relationship, so she couldn’t really attest to anything. and the only relationship she had really had was with oliver, so she wasn’t qualified to give advice. the two of them did have just that in common though. they had both separately been through the highs and lows with oliver. "let’s be real. maybe he’s just plain complicated.” she smiled trying to lighten the topic. “he’s not here, so you can at least put that blame to him for now.and i’ll agree with that. he is a complicated pup." the way oliver reacted to things never seemed simple, they were always complex as it worked through the emotions. at least it was when she had been with him. aspen had to continuously remind herself that oli today wasn’t exactly the same oli she knew. “i dunno just how sour it ended, but I'm sure you guys will get back to being friends just fine." she put a knee in the seat of the swing while the other one lightly propelled her, dragging behind in the mulch.

most of the supers now who had a curfew didn’t seem stupid enough to break that rule. katherine could name a couple who would, but they probably did it mainly to annoy others. not everyone in this town were bad, despite what outsiders may think. katherine wasn’t too surprised when aspen stated she wanted company too. the night shift was a lonely time considering it was pretty much always a job for one person. even just being a hunter in this place could get lonely at times. at the other hunters question katherine smirked, maybe it was a bit obvious she had been drinking. “it h as just been on of those nights…and today. alcohol is good at making you forget things.”

"yeah," aspen nodded her head. she wasn't wrong, alcohol did have that tendency. aspen had never dabbled that hard into drinking. the most experience that she had with the poison was when her and Oliver had stumbled upon a stash of moonshine in the woods. she didn’t remember much of that night though. she didn’t think all drinking was like that, but fuck, how would she know? recently she had gotten a fake id. that was something that’d she’d have to do some exploring with. “it really is,” she laughed a bit. “you have any funny  black out drunk stories to tell? i’m actually a drinking newbie, so i don’t think i’ve only had one.”

um, well it was nice. better than most people’s first times i’d say. i mean, dead of winter in a cabin to ourselves by the fireplace. yeah, uh… very nice.
