aspen chewed on her bottom lip as she looked over the flashing lights and smiling faces within the crowd. she was actually early. well, early for meeting kita. their first date had gone well a couple weeks ago. she was kind of excited to see where this was going to go. there were a lot of uncertainties that she wanted to figure out; maybe tonight she’d get more answers. 

“hey,” she smiled as she saw the shifter approach. “tables have to turn now, huh?” the huntress teased about being the early one this time around. “i’ve already got tickets. where should we start?” she asked curiously as she started to walk with the flow of the crowd, shoulders bumping with his.

Kita smiled softly walking closer toward the girl with his hands stuffed shyly in his pockets as he thought to himself how cute she looked every time he saw her. “I guess they have.” He chuckled walking comfortably next to her side. “Uh. Good question.” He glanced around looking at all the various rides the carnival had to offer. If he was honest with himself he wasn’t sure where to start since it all appeared to be overwhelmingly fun. “We could do bumper cars, the roller coaster, or maybe the haunted ride?” He suggested with a shrug. “I don’t care what we do as long as I get to hang out with you.” He nudged her with a smile. “I mean it as cheesy as it sounds.”

at the feeling of the boy’s bold fingers lacing with her own, aspen’s cheeks flushed. she tried to act natural, like it didn’t make her heart nearly burst from flutters. “no, no hotel for me. i wish though, that’d probably be nicer. “she sighed with a shrug. “uh, no i’m a hunter.” she explained feeling even more nervous than she was previously. she hoped his reaction would be better than most in this town. “i’m glad that you at least had some sort of day off from at least one of them.” she smiled to him. “does it get exhausting bouncing back and forth?” the hunter asked as she started looking over the selection of bowling balls before picking a blue and white one that seemed to be a good size.

“A hunter?” Kita glanced up at her so he could get a better picture of her as one. She didn’t appear to be like the hard boiled and tough guy kind of hunter he usually ran into in this town. Aspen was really sweet and helpful. Maybe she was different from the rest. It break his heart if she wasn’t. “Wow. That’s Crazy you don’t seem like one.” He smiled letting loose of her hand as he went to find the right sized ball. “Ah yeah sometimes but it gives me something to do.” He shrugged simply. “I’d rather be doing something than nothing ya know?” He smiled meeting her gaze. He felt less nervous the more time he’s spent around her. Aspen made him feel comfortable in his own skin. “So, sorry to bring up the whole hunting thing again, but I’m guessing you know all about the supers in this town. Does that mean you know about me?”

briar-williams:

Briar was entirely left unsure, whether she should take in the grin that latched on his features as a good sign or not. She braced herself for what’s to come, as she watched him slowly morphed into another creature, namely.. an adorable fox. She melted at the mere sight, as she bends down on her knee to maintain their eye level. Slowly, she reached out and trailed her fingers against his side, tracing the soft fur that covered his body.

“–I must say that I’m impressed..”

Kita wasn’t all enthused with someone he’d just met stroking his fur, but since she was kind enough not to freak out he’d figure he could allow it just this once. His four paws backed away from her so he could have room to change back into his human form. Morphing back always felt strange and even left his stomach a little queasy. He arose back to his height adjusting his eyes from the view they were in prior with just a couple of blinks. “Thanks.” He said shyly scratching the back of his head. “You know shifters have the ability to shift into anything they leave an impression on. We can’t skin shift tho.. well we can that takes years of practice though.”

“don’t try and excuse me for my shittiness. i can take the critique.” the hunter teased as she walked with him into the building. he looked nice, and it made aspen feel sick. he was cute, and funny, and his mom owned a cute bakery that made the best cake she had tasted in her entire fucking life. of course she felt disgustingly nervous. aspen took the shoes and started to head to their lane to bowl in as she started to to tie then on her feet she looked up to him at his question about work.

“that’s right, the deets.” she could tell that he wasn’t human. she just didn’t know what he was or his feelings towards hunters. she was worried that might break all of this. “well, I went in at 2 am. I walked around town for about 8 hours, patrolling,” she was hoping that saying that was clear enough. “then I went home, went to bed, and now I’m here.” she grinned. “absolutely enthralling, i know.” the huntress teased as she looked over the hideous shoes on her feet. “and what about your day?” she asked curiously. “anything extraordinary happen?”

“Jeez 2 am in the freaking morning to 10 am?” Kita gasped in utter shock. “Are you like one of those hotel guards patrolling the grounds?” The shifter asked curiously lifting himself from up off the bench as he turned to her with a smile. The boy kindly offered out his hand to help Aspen, but then he boldly intertwined his lengthy fingers with her more slender ones as he walked them over to their bowling lane. “Ah it was my day off at the Bookstore today, but Mom needed help with the bakery today.” He sighed looking over to meet her gaze. Her light brown hues making his heart beat a little faster. “So nothing extraordinary to report sadly. Except well other than hanging out with you now.”

She glanced at him, covertly trying to read from his expression. Upon hearing a small laugh coming from him, Briar finally breathes in relief.

“–I bet it’s convenient to be able to catch someone’s scent. I swear, I still need a lot of improvement to concoct, which one is which.”

A hint of a smile grows on her lips at his remark. She can only imagine how different her life might be, if she grow up surrounded by the knowledge of the existence of the supernaturals since a tender age.

“–Well, try me?”

Kita’s eyes glanced over the girl with a mischievous grin. “Alright then. Just don’t freak out okay?” He turned on his heel towards her direction feeling that tingling sensation start to crawl under his skin before he shifted. The sensation flowing through him each time felt riveting. It felt like a taste of life that had more to give. With a deep inhale the shifter finally gave into the sensations buzzing throughout his entire being. His fingertips morphed into paws before her as his view of her drastically changed. She now looked like a giant compared to his height now. Twitching his little black the fox locked on a better idea of her scent as he stepped a little closer with a wag to his tail.

Briar manages a laugh, although it was a short lived one. She wasn’t entirely knew the feeling of having a sibling, but she’s willing to bet that it will feel less lonely if she had someone who she can share her stories with.

“–Well.. I think it was an animal or something. But, I don’t know. I mean.. this town is not an ordinary place to begin with. So, it could be something more than that.”

She murmured with a shrug.

“–So, is that really you? Or is there someone else here with us?”

Kita looked down at the ground and let out a small laugh while shaking his head. “I believe it’s just us. I can’t pick up the scent that anyone else is around. So we are safe don’t worry.” He smiled up to her. “You are right about this town being not exactly ordinary. Though growing up here you don’t really get an idea of what ordinary is.” He continued. “Yeah that was really me. I can show you as long as you promise not to freak out.”

“–Oh, she mustn’t be that bad! At least you had a sister and I bet it’s more fun, rather than being an only child..”

She shrugged, quietly. Briar found herself nodding at the revelation, as if she was starting to make a connection inside her head. It all makes sense now, why he could easily placed Oliver as the culprit. But, she is still refusing to believe that this Kita guy sees him as a bad influence. She eyed him incredulously, soon as something clicked for her.

“–Wait, so.. the thing that I saw earlier, could it be you? I mean, I didn’t catch a full glimpse of it – only movements..”

“I guess... but having my sister as a sibling is like having two siblings in one. Not gonna lie I do sometimes wonder what it’s like being an only child.” He chuckled to himself as he walked along with her. At the incredulous look Kita couldn’t hold back his smile even when he bit down on his bottom lip. “It could be.” He looked away as he teased her. “It just depends.” He shyly rubbed the back of his neck. “What was it that you thought you saw?”

“hey, sometimes it’s nice to work for your freebies, no?” he tilted his own head in return, playfully–not at all surprise-d kita had gotten the answer so fast. he’d always been smart like that. “but yes, you got it right on the nose. as for sneaking in myself, uhh, hm,” taking his lower lip between his teeth, he considered it. of course he wasn’t allowed to take movie-length breaks, but he was sure he could come up with something. “maybe if i said i was cleaning up a crazy big spill. somethin’ like… ‘hey boss, some six year old kid vomited up blue shit all over the back row of seats. it’s ugly, you don’t wanna see it, but… this might take a while…’”

Kita smiled tilting his head in the opposite direction of his friend’s. “That wasn’t a really hard one to work for if I’m being honest.” He shrugged with a laugh noticing how he missed his friends smile and how they used to cut up like this back in their old high school days. It seemed back then life was hard. Getting your shit together for college seemed a lot more stressful. If only they could have savored those last moments of innocence for a little longer. “Oh come on Ash you won’t get caught.” He lightly pushed on his shoulder but then laughed at the excuse he just came up with. Ash was always a clever kid as far as he could remember. “Look at you ya sneaky little shit.” He laughed. “Well come on sir uh why don’t I show you where I saw the vomit you need to clean up.” He waved ash along down the hall with him. “Well what movie haven’t you seen yet that you would like to see?”

aspen, being a person who valued being promptly on time, was of course late. late to the first date that she had ever been asked on. a bit dramatic, but she felt like her life was falling apart. she just wanted to have thing one thing go well. but it wasn’t so far, by fault of no one but her own. she quickly made her way through the streets. dodging traffic and people as agilely as possible, and managed herself getting there only five minutes late.

she looked around for a second, worried. she didn’t see kita. in the same second aspen’s mind went over a million different ways why this could have happened. thankfully, she caught glimpse of kita- a person was just standing in the way. christ what a relief. she looked to him with a smile and waved as she walked up to him. now she was irrationally worried about how she looked. she decided to go for something basic. a nicer casual top with a pair of her nicer blue jeans. they were just bowling after all. “hey, sorry i’m a few minutes late,” she apologized. “hopefully that’s not too bad of a first impression.”

He was early. Too early. Kita was a person who considered to keep the promises he made to a fault. This was his first date since the break off with Rowan and admittedly he was nervous that it was possible he could royally screw things up with this girl. She was on his mind ever since their encounter on the street just only a few days prior. Something about the charisma she delivered kept drawing Kita in closer to Aspen. Her presence merely made him forget his heartache over his once love. He’d hoped after tonight that they could continue these dates getting to know each other more. He’d always been eager to learn more about those who peaked his interest.

Through all the faces in the crowd Kita could feel his lips spread into a wide excited smile.Maybe a little too excited. She looked gorgeous the was the dimming sunlight flowed through her golden brown hair and her smile as she approached him made his heart flutter. “You? Late? Nah... well maybe.” He chuckled. “Well lets see how the rest of the night goes and then I can tell you later.” He smiled opening the door for her and followed her inside. “I gotta warn you I’m pretty crappy at bowling. My sister kicks my ass every time so this might be an easy win for you.” He nudged her arm going to pay the guy for their night of fun. He requested his size shoe and waited for her to get her size. Taking a seat he looked up to her as he started to take off his shoes. “So? How was your work day? give me all the deets.”

“what has a bed but never sleeps, has a mouth yet never eats? always running, never walks, often gurgles, never talks,” ash read off the page of some silly brain teaser booklet he’d been given at the hospital, a smirk on his face. “if you can give me the answer without looking it up on your phone… i’ll get you into whatever movie you want, and even throw in a free popcorn.”

Kita tapped his index finger upon his lips thinking for a moment as he thought about the riddle. “It’s a river right?” He tilted his head over looking the boy with a questionable expression. “Also I thought since I was your friend I got into this things for free anyway? With the free popcorn.” He chuckled. “Also are you gonna sneak in and watch it with me? You can just take a ‘break’ can’t you?”

“–Oh, you know him too? Wait, your sister is his friend? Does that means that.. she’s also – you know – werewolf?”

Briar gave him another look, although now, her eyes widened slightly at the certain revelation. She wasn’t convinced why he gave an entirely unexpected reaction about the young man. As far as she’s aware, Oliver had been nothing but kind. He even willingly offered to take her around the town and take her to lunch.

“–I worked for a vampire. So, I guess it makes the two of them down; that, unless you are also.. supers. But, I’m not good at placing the guesses.”

Kita glanced over the girl with a amused expression as a smile pulled at the corner of his lips. Judging by the expression on her face she must have been new to the supernatural world he’d grew up in. “Yeah.. she is.” He sighed. “But she is also the thorn that’s constantly in my side, but eh what else is new.” He shrugged with a sigh. He gave the girl a look before breaking out into a laugh. “I am, but I won’t be cruel like that mutt. I’m a shapeshifter but we shorten it into shifter. Well it sounds cooler.” He explained. “I guess that’s confusing, but my mom’s side are the wolves whereas my dad was a shifter. I hope that’s not too confusing to follow.”

“It’s… uh… it’s a nickname. My mom use to call me her little ‘stained glass window’ because I was a colorful child… at least that’s what she said anyway.” She shrugged softly “and i prefer it over my birth name for reasons I won’t say and a name I won’t say.”

“That’s actually really adorable.” Kita mused with a soft smile. “Don’t worry I won’t ask even though I’m a little curious.” He chuckled. “So Glass.. uh are you from here or did you move here because I don’t think I’ve seen you around until well.. like now.”

“Exactly, he just doesn’t seem to get that” she said with a small chuckle “you’ve only seen me on one of my good days… when you get to see my bad days you’ll probably see I’m more trouble than I’m worth.” She sighed “Yeah well so can I so we’ll be evenly matched in that field”

Kita frowned at the girl being so hard on herself. It was true he had only met her nearly just fifteen minutes ago, but he was optimistic. “Don’t say that. I could say the same thing about me.” He offered her a kind smile. “And I should say that I’m offended. It feels like you are not gonna give me a chance are you?”
