Sweetheart Pizza (V)
Whether you are celebrating Pizza Day (February 9th), your valentine, or simply appreciating the magic that is baked dough, warm plant-based cheese, and fresh tomato sauce, you’ll heart today’s pie. We’ve made ours with the gluten free, vegan crust developed years ago by Minimalist Baker, but just about every dough out there can be fashioned into a romantic shape if you set your creative heart to it!
Ingredients:
Your favourite pizza dough recipe (Our current go-to? And oldie but a goodie, THIS gluten free, vegan dough recipe by Minimalist Baker is delicious, and made with only seven ingredients.)
About ½ cup plant-based goat cheese (VegNature does one of our favourites.)
2 tbsp fresh basil
½ to 1 tsp pepperoncini piccanti (We used THIS sensational variety from our friends at Terroni, but any hot chilies will do.)
Handful chopped spinach
¼ cup red onion, chopped
¼ cup mushrooms, chopped
2 to 4 cloves garlic, roasted and chopped
Steps:
Prepare your base by mixing together your favourite pizza dough recipe, or by procuring fresh dough from your local bakery or grocery store. To prepare two medium-sized pies, you’ll need about four cups of dough. Split your dough in half, then roll out each.
To make your pizza into a Love Month-worthy delight, fashion it into a heart shape. Do this by pinching the bottom of your oval-shaped dough into a point. At the other end, slice a V-shape into the top of your dough, and smooth the edges. Think of this like sculpting. You are Michelangelo. You’re done when your David resembles a heart (not the anatomical kind… then you’ve gone off-piste).
Top your pizzas as you see fit. We prepared one with plant-based goat cheese, fresh basil, and chili peppers. For our second, we used spinach, roasted garlic, onion, more plant-based goat cheese, mushrooms, and fresh basil.
Bake! Our dough warmed at 350F for about 25 to 30 minutes, but be sure to follow the cooking instructions on your favourite recipe or store-bought pack. Some doughs call for a few minutes on your oven’s broil setting.
Once cooked—your crust should be golden—remove your sweethearts from the oven. Plate, set the table (don’t forget romantic ambiance like candles, flowers, or your favourite television show), and enjoy!

LAGUNITAS WILLETTIZED COFFEE STOUT
Each year Lagunitas brews their imperial coffee stout and hunts down the right barrels to take the beer up a notch. For the latest release, the brewery was able to snag some sought-after barrels from Willett Distillery that once held their rye whiskey. After some time mingling in the wood, “Willettized” is bottled at 12.6% with tasting notes that include chocolate, coffee, oak, and a dash of sweetness from the wood influence. Available in six packs, it might be the best value for a barrel-aged stout you’ll ever find.

Spices with red paprika - Cheap and cheerful indigents
The background is a pice of tile from a local tile shop Topps Tiles at Fort Kinnaird shop - I highly recommend them for sourcing background materials cause the dudes at the counter are totally laid back and gives you a proper good deal if you tell them what you need the stuff for.
The light is from a single SB800 at 1/8 bounced off an muted down.
Strawberry Jam & Cream Scone from Co-Op Classic range sourced from Scotmid - Portobello. Figs, strawberries and grapefruit from the local Aldi store.
It was a dead easy setup. I had a large, white bounce wall what I covered with a 2£ shower curtain - turning the device into a massive light box. One light from the right with an SB800 bounced off from a white reflector.
Even the most simple food can be photographed well.

Shetland Oo: Wool, Textiles, Work. Photography by Tom Barr & words by Kate Davies Wool—or in Shetlandic, Oo—has for centuries figured centrally in island life. Hardy, colourful, characterful sheep have adapted over millennia to a challenging climate, and Shetlanders have always put their fine fleeces to good use, in beautiful, distinctive textiles ranging from woven tweeds to Fairisle handknits. From croft to creative enterprise, wool remains at the heart of many island industries today, and this collaborative documentary project reveals the many different kinds of work that oo supports. In these pages you’ll meet the fascinating graders, breeders, tanners, artists, designers, knitters, weavers, hand spinners, knitwear manufacturers and retailers, who, in so many different ways, have made their lives in oo. Photographed by Tom Barr, and with accompanying essays and profiles written by Kate Davies, this book is produced in celebration of the vital contemporary work of Shetland wool. The book comprises 116 pages and is printed & bound by Bell & Bain in Glasgow. Tom's photograph of Eiizabeth Johnston's hands spinning was recently shortlisted for an award in the EEF photography competition. We have produced a special limited hardbound edition (of 100 copies) to celebrate! Each copy of the limited edition is numbered, and signed by Tom and Kate. Take a look at the video bringing together Tom's photographs with the sounds of Shetland wool, recorded by our talented friend Felicity Ford, aka Knitsonik. Please note: this book is a documentary project exploring Shetland wool in words and images. It does not contain knitting patterns.
