"Dogwhistles" are called that based on real "dog whistles", many of which are pitched too high to be audible to most humans, but are still perfectly audible to dogs.
Rhetorical dogwhistles are things that most people would not be able to identify as bigoted because they're INTENDED to have plausible deniability.
The wording changes are meant to be subtle enough that people really can mix them up accidentally when they don't have much information!
So when the gender critical movement calls trans women "transwomen", they're hoping for 2 things.
this usage will spread enough among people who don't know any better, to give transphobes the plausible deniability of not LOOKING like a frothing bigot constantly.
the usage grammatically places trans women in a different category than other women; it's changing "trans" from an adjective to part of a noun to make this distinction.
The more we can avoid this usage, the less deniability have transmisogynists have when using it, and the less rhetorical ground we cede to the degendering and misgendering of trans women.
I don't actually think ceding this ground is LESS divisive than pointing it out politely.

Can I just say like. I do understand that people hate Jax because she's realistically shitty instead of fictional character shitty. I do also understand that people hate Jax because she takes up a lot more screemtime than all the other characters while also being realistically shitty and infuriating to watch. I even understand that people think the show did a bad job at framing her actions as bad (I disagree that it did. Despite all the characters choosing to not retaliate against Jax's shittiness, everything she does to them is framed as undeniably harmful and in Gangle's case, actively abusive. There are plenty of shows with characters that act the same but it's treated like a joke or like "they don't really mean it so it's fine", and TADC actively does Not do that, instead showing how Jax's horribleness affects everyone negatively. Just because the characters didn't Condemn Jax Christian Style doesn't mean the writers condone the abuse)
But I just do not vibe with people saying she drove Ribbit and Kaufmo to abstract. Did y'all forget Kaufmo was deep into psychosis from being trapped for so long? Did y'all forget that all you saw of Ribbit was fully from Jax's perspective? Jax's stonewalling sure as fuck didn't help, and the flashbacks show Jax BELIEVES that she killed them both, but rationally she can't be the sole reason they abstracted. Because even if hypothetically Jax had never arrived in the circus in the first place, everyone would still be having a grand ol' shitty time being manhandled by Caine for years. Like, that is a thing that happened. Y'all do remember that, right?
Not saying this to absolve Jax of the blame she does have in making everyone's lives worse on purpose, and god knows I have Thoughts about her loud ass EXTERNALIZED misogyny, her abuse of Gangle and general fuckery around Ragatha and Zooble (who specifically does Not take her shit lying down but also has the patience of a SAINT and enough social intelligence that they know Jax WANTS to be hated and so they will NOT give her that). hi, filipino here. just want to say that our independence day is june 12, not july 4. july 4 is when the united states government decided that they would recognize our freedom, specifically because it is your independence day and they wanted to cement their cultural hegemony over our country. and because of their influence on our country this was recognized for a time as our independence day. we still commemorate it, but i hope you can understand why we don’t want our independence day to be associated so closely with our former colonizer. it wasn’t even a work holiday for us.
june 12 is the day that we filipinos declared our own independence for ourselves, and that is what we celebrate as independence day
