“Remind me to never bid against you at an auction,” she said with a small laugh. Something about Leah managed to put her on her back foot, it was always refreshing to see a woman with that much confidence, but power was what really radiated from Leah. Not something like Gio’s strength, but the knowledge that she could do whatever she wanted, could make other people do what she wanted, with a few well-placed words and convincing looks. It probably should have scared her, but it just made her feel a small knot of excitement unfurling in her stomach. She blushed at the mention of her power, half from embarrassment at losing her cool earlier, half… something else. Gio nodded absently and made quick work of placing her car in the vacant spot by lifting it, mostly because of the time it would save, she told herself. Gravel crunched under her boots as she turned to Leah, a bit unsure how to handle herself at an unexpected lunch out with one of the Westbrooks for a slight that was probably blown out of proportion. “So, you said you wanted a panini?” Even though Leah was trying to take her out, Gio still felt like she owed Leah something. 

“I’ll make a note to remind you, don’t worry.” Leah seems to be in prime form today and it is a sight to see. The Westbrooks and the Castillos had a working relationship. They’d call up Gio’s family with new ideas for houses and they would make it happen. She wishes now that there was more time to spend and less pressure on her shoulders -- maybe they could have been closer. No sense in wasting time on what could have been though, right? The two of them were here now and that should have been enough.

It’s still amazing to see the car just get lifted up like it weighed nothing. There were some powers that were just impressive to see upclose. “Yeah, it started with that. I think I might also want something sweet now though.” A moment of thoughtful consideration. “I know this cupcake place close to the coffee shop. I’ll pay for lunch and we can split the cupcakes?”

“Aw, I’m charming,” he says, grinning. He’d also accept the cool one, the best one or the badass.

“Oh, yeah. I remember that fuckin fiaso. He had just lost it, right? Where’d he end up finding that thing?” Ashe actually knew exactly where Lucas ‘found’ that thing since Ashe was the one who very carefully put back the pilfered paraphernalia. After Elijah swiped it, the poor guy had to sit through a tag team lecture from Ashe and Texas on how stealing from a Westbrook was (and always will be) a bad fucking idea. Of course, even after that stern talking to, they all still ended up trying it out because when Ashe and Friends are in the same room together, self control is at a minimum.

“Last Friday—” he stops himself. “I don’t even know if I can give you all the details about last Friday ‘cause Big Brother might be listenin. We got away with Some Shit…” You can almost hear the capital letters in his voice as it lowers “…and I’d like to keep it that way.” Nothing they ever do is really off limits unless someones life could be in serious danger. Thats where the group collectively draws their lines. They’ve all been let off with warnings at one point or another. Others have had to do community service or shell out a few points to cover some minor damages but Ashe rarely got that far. The perks (or maybe disadvantages) of having a dad with psychic powers that stops you from getting too deep into shit. 

“But you and Catman…the ‘friend’. You two don’t get into some uh…wild adventures?” Eyebrows raise. He’s not implying that they’re fucking but—yes, he is.

“Well, it depends on who you ask. If you ask a normal person who can’t turn into animals and recognize smells... Their story of how he found it might be different from mine.” She flashes this smile that looks exactly like a cat and she isn't saying that she knows, but boy is that shit implied. Leah didn’t care much about the bong -- it was more just about the fact that Lucas would not shut up while it was gone. He would be waiting for her every day with puppy dog eyes, begging her to help him. When it popped back up and smelt strangely like one Elliot Ashe, she didn’t see much of a point in questioning it. 

She doesn’t have a hard time imagining what The Crew gets into. There is a part of her that wonders what it would be like to not have such heavy expecations on her shoulders. If she hadn’t been the prodigy -- the one who seemed capable of doing any number of things other than failing. What if she was out causing trouble and having fun with Ashe and his crew? It was almost impossible to imagine. 

The question about Travis pulls her out and she has to laugh. “Lucas asks me that same question, in the same tone of voice, with his eyebrow raised just like that. No is the answer to your implication.” After considering the question, she shrugs. “I wouldn’t say wild. We just hang out -- he comes over to the house or I go into the forest and we just chill and talk about the universe or our day. Travis is--” and she realizes she has never really put into word how she feels about her best friend. “--one of the greatest people I have ever met.” A pause because this is Ashe. “There is no sex happening, so we’re clear.”

He thinks about all the perks Leah’s seemingly infinite supply for points must get her. Private tutors and whatever else she wants. He wasn’t poor in Elswood by any means, no one was, but there was still a clear gap in their class. He shakes his head, sighs out a “the facts are all fucked here.” That could be their new slogan. 

WELCOME TO ELSWOOD: THE FACTS ARE ALL FUCKED HERE

He almost says ‘which one?’ when his mystery friend is described as The Trashy One. They aren’t exactly the most popular crew in Elswood. They could all be considered garbage people. Immediately after she says his name, he can’t stop the laugh that leaves him. Other people insulting some of his best friends shouldn’t be so damn funny but this little quip doesn’t even begin to compare to all the times they’ve ragged on eachother so it’s A-okay in his book. “Kurtis fuckin’ Feiler,” he laughs again, even harder this time because it’s true. “He vapes weed. He vapes weed, but no one else fucking vapes weed so he’s always trying to get us to vape weed and try his edibles and tinctures and shit it’s—” a goddamn mess is what he would say if he wasn’t fighting back a fit of laughter, but he cuts himself off. “You’re fucking spot on. That’s amazing. Have you done that for everybody?”

She doesn’t agree with the choice of language, but she agrees with the sentiment. Facts depended on a number of things -- mostly power and influence. If she hadn’t had a mother who was so attentive and hadn’t been in the position to actually stand her ground against the tutor, what would have happened? More than likely another white guy who thought his perspective was the only one that mattered. It would have been history repeating itself. There were a number of things she’d rather do than let that happen. 

Leah doesn’t have a problem with Ashe or his group of friends -- they aren’t around nearly as much as Lucas and his gang. She knew them from her time in school, though there wasn’t really any time for her to hang out. Expectations were a lot heavier back then. “Bryce is the handsome one. You’re the charming one. Tim is a little odd. No opinion of Sam or Christian.” A pause and a chin tap. “Elijah and Lucas got into an argument once, I think. Nothing huge. I think Lucas thought he stole his bong? What a weird guy.” 

“It sounds like all of you get into a lot more wild adventures than Travis and I.” What did they even do? Go fishing? Talk about sexuality and the universe? They were old people who just enjoyed each other’s company.

“Huh,” another drag of Lucas’ his cigarette “That’s cute as shit. Real fuckin genuine.” There’s no sarcasm in his voice for once in his damn life. Shortly after Leah’s retort, Ashe is running a hand over his face, covering up a smile. “Now, now. I didn’t say all that. Let’s not do that.” He does not!

When Leah replies, Ashe is almost at a loss for words. These are the things he doesn’t really spend time thinking about. All the unknowns surrounding Elswood don’t leave him itching to find out more. Maybe he leaned in that direction in his early Elswood days when he was younger angrier and terribly confused, but not now, he only tends to speculate for shits and giggles now. He gets nothing out of worrying or wondering anymore.

“Oh, yeah, totally. Vive la résistance and shit.” A short laugh quickly subsides. He’s reaching out and trying to grab hold of an unusually fuzzy memory. “…In high school—I think it was Freshman year—they taught us about some fucking battle or war or riot? I dunno. It was some sorta conflict. They gave the class some bullshit information. I wasn’t the best at math or reading or shit like that but I was good with dates and recalling events, so I tried to correct some shit. They told me I was mistaken. I got mad. Shit got intense. I…used some strong language…they called my dad and everything. I know I was right though.” He swears he feels a headache coming on. He pretends like more nicotine will help.

“These things are kinda disgusting, y’know? Not in a ‘Smoking Kills’ kinda way but,  uh, flavor wise. Guess it makes sense though. We shouldn’t enjoy smoking here. Gotta make healthy mutant babies ‘n shit.”

She finds herself laughing -- something that usually only happens when Travis is around. Which is understandable considering how close the two of them of them and that they have seen each other naked under numerous circumstances. “I’ll believe whatever you say.” Her smile is sheepish, but she gives him a pass and doesn’t press. 

Leah could understand being upset when someone told you were wrong, especially when you knew otherwise. “I had something similar happen with a private tutor. He told me one thing, but I’d learn something different from my mom. I knew I was right, which I was, he thought otherwise because he was the one with a degree in history.” She remembers him briefly. “My mom fired him from arguing and raising his voice when I was the one that was right. It was pretty nice.” 

“Vaping is better, from what Logan tells me. You get flavors or something like that. I feel like this makes me sound like -- what is your friend’s name? The trashy one... Kurtis? He looks like he talks about how great vaping is all the time.”

The mention of a library pulls him out of his weird ass headspace for a moment. Of all places that’s what she’d choose? “So, no scantily clad dongs in your face, huh?” He throws a smirk her way and tacks on an addendum “Or tits, y’know, whatever you’re into. It’s 2017.”  

His face lights up when Leah goes for her bag. Salvation. “Fuck, you’re the best.” He catches the pack of cigarettes, laughs to himself at the name on the outside and takes one out. As he lights the end of the cigarette, he takes a second to thank god for being a human zippo. Once he’s past that first drag, his brain is back on track. “So, what makes a library outside of Elswood so special? I’m genuinely curious ‘cause— uh—I don’t mean to alarm you or nothin, but we have plenty of books in Elswood.”

“That doesn’t sound remotely enjoyable to me. I like things to be a little more intimate, a lot more private than at some strip club.” The smirking that was sent in her direction is now shot back at him. “Do you enjoy scantily clad dongs in your face?” The conversation was a two-way street so why not have some fun with it?

She lets the question hang in the air for a few seconds before she decides to dig in. “Elswood has a lot of books, but they don’t have books on everything. There are things happening right now beyond these walls that we will never know about -- small things, large things, that are ticking right on by us. Elswood also doesn’t have a lot of books, things left out, erased, things we will never learn about.” She can remember her grandmother telling her about something that she’d never read in the books -- a revolution in Mexico, an attempt to fight back. It seemed so far away, so not possible. “I’d like to read things that aren’t filtered through a committee.”

“You got cigarettes?” Unlikely. He doesn’t give her a chance to answer. “You’d think after all the years of Westbrook reign, they’d let you guys go on a lil field trip to the outside, right? Lifetime membership perks, or some shit? They could let you see the seven wonders of the world and bring you right on home afterwards. Safe and sound.” Theres a pause. He’s thinking. “Seven wonders, strip club and a plane ride. Just to check all the boxes for shit you can’t do in Els—wait— and a trip to the city. Some place like New York.”  He looks away from her for a moment, like part of him is somewhere else  “My name would’ve been Neal?” It isn’t a question, but his inflection makes it seem like one. He shrugs his own words off like they aren’t something he keeps under lock and key. “Don’t call me that though—hey, do you have cigarettes?”

She listens more than anything else. This seems personal -- a few things that he needs to say out loud that she just so happens to be in the room for. Logan does this a lot. A series of questions posed and answered that she is answer for, but isn’t actually required to answer. Leah understands that not everything needs to be a conversation. “I’m okay without the strip club. Lucas would probably love that a lot more than me. I’d like a library in the city -- a big place like New York would be nice.”

She reaches into her bag and pulls out a pack that clearly state “LUCAS WESTBROOK” in big bold letters. They get tossed in Ashe’s direction. “I won’t tell him if you won’t.”

He looks up, takes a deep breath and imagines he’s breathing in nicotine, but on  the exhale, the only thing that leaves his lips is a sigh. He shouldn’t have left his only damn pack of cigarettes at home. “You ever think about like…life here? How its different? Like what you’re gonna do now that you’re on the inside compared to what you coulda done out there? Shit.”

She is halfway through her book when Ashe speaks up and there is a small part of her that is confused. They’d been talking about siblings and music and having a moderately good time -- now they were here. The beat she takes is thoughtful and more for him than her. “Yes and no.” A bookmark is placed into her book and then she focuses on him. “I think about my family outside these walls a lot, how different things would between us. We go back four generations. No Westbrook in all those years has seen anything outside of this.”

One more pause for something more internal. 

“What would our name be without this place? Who would any of us be? It keeps up sometimes.”

He looks out at the water and his tongue pokes out to lick his little cat mouth in a way that’s almost cartoonishly feline. “You’ve got an unfair advantage. 400-something pounds of unfair advantage. 400-something pounds of big-clawed, furry, brown unfair advantage.” 

Cats being averse to getting wet is a stereotype. (Catist?) Travis loves it, in and out of form. Of course, he couldn’t wade the way a bear could unless he wanted to get swept away by the current, but that's what happens when you weren’t blessed with the gift of turning into multiple animals. He takes a first step out into the water and is already dangerously close to knee deep. One step. Fuck being tiny. He looks around for something he could stand on and sees a rock sticking out of the water a few feet away. Perfect.

“If you give me a head start, close your eyes and use one paw then maybe it’d be fair. Maybe, but are you willing to do all that?” Lil kitty paws swipe at the water as he speaks, looking up at her.

Leah is actually still pretty inclined to give him that head start. There really isn’t a doubt in her mind that she catch more fish with one claw and eyes closed than Travis could with both claws with his eyes open. She considered it for a few moments and then decided that it might have been. Her parents had always said that it was important for a Westbrook to test their limits -- Lucas never did, so she had to pick up his slack. “You’re on.”

She gets keeps her legs firmly planted on the ground before closing her eyes and sniffing the air. The fish were heading this way and if it weren’t for the head start that she was going to give him, a few of them would have already ended up on her claws. Leah really enjoyed days like this, being able to spend time with nature and hunt. It made the part of her brain that housed all the animal transformations incredibly happy.

“You should get ready,” she says and turns to the direction of Travis’ scent. “A lot of fish will be heading your way in about thirty seconds.”

It was hard to be mad at someone who was so understanding. Gio didn’t quite know what to do with her anger and outburst being validated instead of frowned upon and written up. Watch your temper Giovanna, her father would whisper, wait until we’re home. And she would, though by then her short fuse would have already tapered out, rationalizing others’ actions on the way home. With a power as destructive as hers, it was important that she never let herself lose control.

She let out an incredulous laugh, “Okay, you win, food and coffee. You’re hard to bargain with, you know that? I just have to… park…” she said awkwardly, pointing her thumb towards the car behind her and the newly vacant spot. “Or I can– I can probably just lift it, or wait, did you want to walk? I was just assuming we would walk. Would you rather drive?”

The Westbrook house was bubbling over with personality. Her parents were unique in their own way, Lucas was a tour de force in his own right, and Logan was-- well, xir was just Logan. She’d grown accustomed to being the mature one, the one that listened well and gave advice. It created the occasional problem because there were people who wanted more from her than, wanted some sort of proactive listener that always gave the easy answers. Leah had never been interested in being a person like that and didn’t mind letting people know it. 

“I’ve always been a fan of winning and driving a hard bargain comes with the last name. I’m fine with walking.” There was some part of her brain that hated being trapped in small spaces. “I’d love to see that super strength up close again so feel free to just pick it up.”

Echo watches her hand shift, but not with childlike curiosity or wonder. If anything, they were more like a scientist surveying an experiment, objective. Hm. When you took into account that she came from one of the most exceptional families in Elswood, it was odd that her ability wasn’t…that exceptional. So, she could transform into animals? Where and what would that get her? Free flights? Unapposable thumbs? At the most, regenerative limbs. Echo made a mental note to thank whatever deities were up there for truly useful powers later. “That’s interesting.” Truthfully, their mind was drifting off into somewhere else, but the caffeine was helping them maintain the lose grip they had on their focus. Also, they were a great actor so would consorting with a Westbrook hurt? Absolutely not. “You can shift into multiple animals just like that? No pain? No discomfort?” 

“Not when I shift fully or partially, no.” She has resumed typing away at her paper. Leah had never really considered her powers interesting -- they were just an extension of who she was. Her family had always focused intently on making sure that all the children’s powers were fine tuned. At some point, she’d decided to view the ability to change into animals as just another muscle function. “They just generally result in me being hungry if sustained for extended periods of time. I can go about five days before changing back from exhaustion.” There was a pause and she looked back at Echo. “However, when I borrow an animals strength or speed without transforming? There might be a little pain for a few days.”

“Always with no warning? Always with no warning,” he says, shaking his head. The words are mostly to himself, but still loud enough for her to hear. Apparently, it’s morphin time because she’s already way ahead of him, gone. When he’s with Leah, his two roads diverged in a yellow wood are usually Cat or Human but the decision to shift into a tabby is almost always a no-brainer. Even when he’s not going Full Cat, his ability grants him the gift of enhanced senses, agility and a sprinkling of other things. All that doesn’t even begin to compare to a complete shift. Feline form tends to feel more natural than human at times. 

There’s only a brief pause before he’s pulling his shirt over his head. “I can’t afford to rip my clothes. I’m not an Elswood Millionaire...” As he speaks, he takes the time to fold up his shirt and place it in his bag. “…but Leah Alicia Westbrook can destroy whatever she wants. It’s fine.” The belt is next. It goes into the bag, rolled up neatly. “‘I can buy a new one, Travis.’ ‘You don’t have to sew my shirt back together, Travis.’” His spot on impression of her is something he’s perfected by being around her so often and he’s damn proud of it. Next, the boxers and jeans come off and find their place beside the rest of the things in his bag which include, but aren’t limited to: snacks, a change of clothes, a compass, a pocket knife, a flashlight (with extra batteries), a water bottle and a first aid kit. Soon, there’s a stark naked Travis speed-walking through the woods to cover the distance Leah created. He adds his bag to the mix and (FINALLY) shifts as well. Just a little gray tabby cat and a large black bear walking through the woods. Big green eyes look up at her expectantly as he follows.

Travis was always more practical with his clothes than she was. Leah had decided very early on to continue ripping through clothes until someone in Elswood made it possible for the damned things to just stretch to accommodate her new shape. You can make a whole secret society for meta humans, but there were no clothes that could accommodate a change in genetic structure? Weak. She gave a soft growl at Travis’ comments namely because he was right -- Leah could always buy new clothes, but he didn’t have to use her whole name and put her business out on front street like that.

The thing Leah always found interesting about transforming was the few seconds it took her to get used to the new body. If she hadn’t changed into a certain animal in an extended period of time, she needed to remember how to handle not being a human being. Her steps were clumsy for a few seconds, but by the time Travis is trailing along, she is as balanced as a one can be at almost five hundred pounds. She had the way to the lake memorized, she’d tracked it days before they’d actually planned on doing this. Their trip wasn’t long, only a matter of minutes. Leah came to a stop at the sight of the lake and dropped her bags onto the ground before motioning Travis towards the water. 

“The fish should be traveling this way,” she still couldn’t explain how the fuck they managed to communicate like this. She could speak cat and it seemed to remain even as an animal. Leah headed into the water and stood in place, claws extended, looking real menacing. “You want to see who can catch more fish? I’ll give you a head start.”

He’s inside, cleaning up the kitchen when she arrives. Ears pick up the dampened sound of shoes on wet leaves before he sees her or hears the knock. He know’s she’ll enter before he can get out an ‘it’s open’ and he’s very focused on this one stain on the table, so he waits for her to come in on her own. The first thing he notices after her presence in his home is her umbrella, wet from the rain. He frowns. “The rain is on a schedule like a sprinkler. It’s timed. It’s Sunday, so it should clear up in uh…” a glance at the clock “…seven minutes? Seven minutes. I could make you a copy of the schedule. I have a real nice laminator. Or we could keep it digital and do a shared calendar. That could work too.” He pauses. “Oh, and that was an impressive roar.” He replays what she said before he started talking about laminators, wrings out the rag he was using, puts it back in its proper place under the sink. “I’m ready to go.” He picks up his bag sitting on a chair near him and swings it over his shoulder. “Are you leading the way?”

Honestly? She is always amazed at the fact that Travis -- the actual Elswood hermit has somehow managed to convince someone to make it rain on a timer in his section of the forest. She knows him though and has complete confidence in his ability to make something like this happen. At the option of a digital calendar, she pulls out her phone because who doesn’t love a good shared calendar between friends? Shared memos and notes and various other things that only someone like Leah could possibly get excited about. “The shared calendar sounds great and thanks. I’ve been practicing.” Once she has confirmed that he is ready to go, she turns and heads out of the cabin and tries to figure out what exactly she wants to do. 

“Let’s get this party started.” The transformation starts with her arms and soon there is a large black bear standing outside of the cabin. She glances around for a few seconds before gathering her backpack and tossing it onto her back. A look is shot in Travis’ direction just before she starts to head towards the water.

A part of her wants to tell her how wrong that is. She doesn’t have siblings, but she’s pretty sure that’s not how it works, and to think of them as responsibilities just feels off. This girl shouldn’t have to be responsible for anyone but herself, and if she were anyone else, Gio might have tried telling her that, but she wasn’t anyone else.. She was Leah Westbrook, as in The Westbrooks™ and Gio wasn’t going to do anything to upset one of the most powerful people in this small town. 

“Well, maybe this wasn’t exactly ‘the right place’. And not professional, either” Gio trails off, looking at the small crowd in front of her shop starting to disperse. She can only hope her little tantrum won’t make its way to any officials or she’ll have a serious dip in her points. The offer for lunch is an unexpected one, and throws Gio off for a second as she regards the other woman. “It’s really not your–,” she pauses, wondering if refusing would be more damaging than saying yes. “Okay. What about just a coffee? It wasn’t that big of a deal, I probably blew it out of proportion.” 

“I can agree with that.” Right place and right time were important, but Leah understood that frustrations that came with being baited and having someone ignore what you asked them to do. As much as she loved Lucas, she’d understood better than most the frustration that sometimes came with knowing him. However, he was gone now and it meant cleaning up any messes that he might have made. It was natural in her eyes, correcting the mistakes -- just like when she used to help him with homework. Small simple adjustments to make things better. 

“A coffee sounds great-- or it would if I wasn’t hungry.” Increased hunger was a byproduct of her ability to transform into some many animals. Transforming took energy and energy came from eating. Leah shrugs at the whole blew it out of proportion thing. “You asked someone not to do something and they continued to do it. I think what you did makes a lot of sense.” A long pause. “--so? Food and coffee?”

“No, I’m conf—” a pause. “Let’s rewind. Let’s play this shit back. Okay, so I gave you a pizza, yeah? I gave you a single pizza and as a tip, you are now giving me, Ashe, five-thousand points. You, Leah Westbrook, are giving me the same number of points I’d make in two weeks—maybe even more than two weeks—in a single tip.”

“You did. One Pizza. One large meat lovers with onions because Lucas insists that he can’t eat pizza without onions.” This whole thing is actually kind of funny and maybe a little sad. “I am doing just that. I have more points than I will ever be able to use in this life time. You work hard on a regular basis and have been doing this for a while. Why shouldn’t I share what I have with you?”

“Waitwaitwaitwait—hold up.” He looks at his phone, squinting. 5,000? Eyes glance at her before they’re back on the phone again. He holds it sideways and rereads. There’s no fucking way. Ashe must be higher than he thought because he swore the numbers for that little transaction were in the thousands. A second option is a necessity at this point. He’s done with trusting his own brain for the night. There’s an overly confused look on his face as he holds out the phone to her. 

“—This says five-thousand, right? I can’t just take this.”

“Why?” She squinted and glanced back down at her phone, pulling up the app again. Leah always tried to tip well, didn’t see much of a point in not doing it because she had the means to do so. Her parents had always warned her about being better with money, about actually understanding the value of a dollar. The main problem was that she understood and didn’t really care for currency. What could he family achieve with such a great fortune? Why not give it away?

“Oh yeah, it does. I was worried the system failed or something. Can it even do that? What do you want more? Is it not enough?”

He catches a glimpse inside when the door opens. God, was any of this even a little bit necessary? All of this excess. Who really needed a mansion in this town? He focuses on her instead, watches her tap away at a glass screen, expecting the average tip, but when she suggests something in the thousands, all he can do is laugh. It’s a joke, right? She’s just fucking around. He knows The Westbrooks™ are rich, but they can’t be that damn rich. “I dunno I’m used to upwards of 4k points.”
