Kit leaned down a bit to pat Inu on the head——after all, it wasn’t his fault. He hadn’t known. Kit’s heart was beating rabbit-fast as he regarded the Dove in front of them. Was this real? Was it actually happening? A buzzing sensation was beginning under his skin, behind his eyes, under his feet…it seemed almost as if he wasn’t even standing on the ground any longer. Was this…were they…finally going to be rescued? After all this time? His mind went to his clothes and appearance in general. They didn’t have shoes, and their clothing was probably dirty from living underground for so long…what a way to meet the person that meant everything to them, huh?
❝ I…I’ve been telling Inu here stories about you for ages…I m-mean, at first it was just a coping thing, you know? But…you’re really here! I kept telling him you were coming to rescue us and…n-now you’re h-here…J-Juuzou-s-san… ❞ He was trying as hard as he could not to become emotional, but at the prospect of being rescued…well, it was difficult not to shed at least a few tears. ❝ Are w-we going to get to see the outside w-world again? Please tell us you can take us…p-please…our moms are gone, they won’t be back for a while, probably…we can be fast, Juuzou-san, we can. We promise. And we know all the ways to get out of here… ❞
Wait. Hold up, what?
❝ But how do you know who— ❞
"Please tell us you can take us”
He cast a glance at the one acting like a dog, then looked back towards the one who spoke. Clearly the two were in horrible condition. Desperate and clinging to something they probably weren’t even sure really existed. The investigator felt a strange sense of pity— no, empathy— beginning to work its way into his mind; they were like little cadavers, bruised and broken both body and soul, which reminded him of his own past. But, why? Why should he care what happens to these two? It’s not as if he knew them personally or anything, they were just scrappers like he had been. Truth be told, his emotions and mentality had been all out of sorts since the incident with Shinohara occurred, and ironically, he really wasn’t too sure how to feel about it. It was almost as if he felt the need to protect them.
❝ …Okay, then. Let’s go. ❞
Well, that was nonchalant.
He listened to Kit. Outside world? Inu had never known the outside world. All he knew was Mama, fighting, and Kit. Kit was so brave, talking to Juuzou. After a bit he reached up to tug lightly at Kit's shirt.
"Kit ... "
There was a whine that escaped him as he continued to hide behind the fox. He didn't really know how to react. There was a bit of him that was happy, happy that they were going to get rescued, but he .... he was a ghoul. Wouldn't that mean he would get killed if he left? Doves fought ghouls. While, Inu really was human, he truly believed he was a ghoul. Finger curled in the fabric of his friend's shirt and he whined once more.
"Kit ... what about ... "
He was scared, so incredibly scared. While Kit had once been part of the outside world, he never had. He knew nothing of the outside world, knew nothing of how it was. Kit would probably fit right in, he however ...
Don’t get him wrong——he wasn’t expecting a superhero in a cape and shining armor to come and get them. He hadn’t been expecting anyone with insanely huge muscles (well…maybe a little) or anything of the sort. He just…hadn’t been expecting this person. Not only because the boy in front of him wasn’t exactly what he was expecting (though he did match his thoughts of how he looked in the stories, more or less) but because…well…he just hadn’t been expecting him of all people to show up at their door like he did it every week. Not to mention that he’d been hoping so badly that exactly what was happening to happen that when it actually did happen he wasn’t sure what to do.
But if nothing else, the trademark XIII of the other white-haired male’s hair clips gave away his identity——the ghouls among the underground had passed along the stories of the investigator they had occasionally nicknamed “Thirteen” for that exact reason. One of the most dangerous investigators of all. And his name was…
❝ Ah——are y-you…are you…maybe… ᴍɪsᴛᴇʀ ᴊᴜᴜᴢᴏᴜ? ❞
The one growling seemed to become more agitated as the investigator appeared, earning a raised brow in response. The other with them seemed to be in shock, as if they hadn’t expected anyone to show up— which, well, they likely didn’t.
❝ Hah? Mister…? ❞
What was it with all these people he’d never met before, let alone seen before, knowing his name? Though, it was clear as day that the two children were scrappers, just as he used to be. Juuzou himself had been rather well-known as a child, but would someone so young really be able to tell who he was right off the bat? Maybe they’d heard Shinohara. Perhaps that’s how they could identify him.
❝ How’d you know that? ❞
Inu immediately stopped growling and his eyes went wide. Wait. This was Mister Juuzou? The guy both he and Kit had looked up to for so long? The scrapper looked over at his friend, still wide eyes before letting out a whimper. He had just been growling at the Mister Juuzou.
It then occurred to him. Wasn't he a ghoul? Mister Juuzou was a Dove. He killed ghouls. There was more whining that escaped him and he crawled over to Kit, hiding behind the other scrapper's legs. He continued to whimper, hiding behind his friend. He'd probably be more excited about meeting their idol, if he hadn't just been growling at him.

Usually his stories were about the past——the great feats that Juuzou Suzuya had accomplished, the escape from the underground, from scrapper life. It was enough to make the more feminine ghoul hopeful for their eventual rescue——even though Kit knew that it was far past any point of anyone coming to save them. If he stopped telling Inu stories, though, what reason would either of them have for living? He couldn’t let the hope die out, not now. He had to be strong for Inu, no matter what the cost, even if telling these stories over and over hurt him.
This time, he’d tell a story about the future. For both him and for Inu.
❝ Alright, then. A story about Mister Juuzou. This one’s going to be the best one yet. Do you know what’s happening right now? Mister Juuzou is in the CCG, and they’re investigating the scrapper cases. Probably they even know our names, or at least our moms’ names. And they’re planning right now how to get us out of here, you know? But they have to be careful, because there are very many ghouls here that might hurt them. Even if they’re very good with quinques, they probably won’t be able to come in without a solid plan. So you know who else is helping them? ❞ Here, he was pretty much bullshitting, but he’d heard the name around and decided it was as good as any. ❝ There’s a guy even better than Mister Juuzou who knows how to make good plans. His name is Arima-san. And he’s helping, too. Everyone’s on our side, Inu. And Mister Juuzou is gonna come right through one of these tunnels and he’s gonna be so proud of us for staying strong for so long. Even longer than him. He’s going to be so impressed with us, can you imagine, Inu? Mister Juuzou being impressed with us! It’ll be so great. ❞
He listened intently to the story. He always loved Kit's stories. The thought of getting out of this miserable life was a wonderful thought. While, this life was all he'd known, he knew it had to be better outside of this. A life where he didn't get punished for not doing good enough, a life where he didn't have to worry about impressing Mama, a life where he and Kit should just ... be themselves. But the thought about actually leaving Mama was scary. If he wasn't around to protect Mama, then who would protect her? Mama would be on her own. He should his head lightly at that thought and looked back towards Kit. He hoped that what Kit said was right, that Mister Juuzou would one day save them and they'd be just like him. And he'd be proud of them. Just that thought made Inu so happy. The Mister Juuzou. Proud of them!
"You really think he'd be proud of us, Kit? That he'd be impressed with us?"
If he had a tail, it would most likely be wagging so much. He wanted so much for such a thing to happen, that their idol, their role model would be impressed and proud that they'd stayed strong for so long.
Kit was always more aware when their mamas said the Doves were coming. Hadn’t he wanted from the time he was young to be rescued by them? But over and over again, he’d escaped with his mom and Inu and Inu’s mom and the rest of the pack to some other place that would become their new home. He never ran away. Running away was bad, and he and Inu would probably be killed by their mothers or the other ghouls in the pack before they had a chance, even if there were Doves there to safeguard them. None of the Doves had ever been strong enough to offset something like the ghouls that owned Kit and Inu, so their hope had been dashed every single time.
But now…now Kit’s nose caught something strange. It wasn’t nearly as developed as Inu, who truly believed he was a ghoul and seemed to have developed the senses to go along with it, but there was a certain way that the Doves smelled when they came through the tunnels——like laboratories, or like medical equipment. The scent he was catching was different. Almost like those forgotten memories of what real humans smelled like…
❝ Ah——I-Inu…m-maybe you shouldn’t growl so much, yeah? I mean, keep doing it, just…quiet down a little, maybe, I hear someone’s voice… ❞
What was that sound? The boy glanced around, eyes wide and alert. Ah, well, he’d go figure it out for himself— it’s not as if staring blankly at nothing would conjure up an answer. Slippers scuffed across the ground as he followed the noise, which seemed to be growling.
'Juuzou! Don't run off by yourself!'
Shinohara’s words were ignored. The investigator was far too preoccupied to care, and if anything bad happened, he could fend for himself. There seemed to be a new sound, now, a voice, one that wasn’t his superior’s. After a few moments of tracking, the investigator peered around a corner, looking in the direction he believed the noise to have come from. And there, a few meters away, was what appeared to be a pair of children. One was growling, too. Strange.
❝ Oh. Oh my. Hello there. ❞
His eyes gazed over towards his friend, but his head didn't move. Why was Kit telling him to soften his growling? What if the visitors were going to hurt Mama? Or worse, what if they would try to hurt him and Kit? He wouldn't let that happen. He wouldn't let anyone touch Kit.
Upon seeing the face and hearing the voice, Inu tensed up, lowering himself closer to the ground. The corner of his mouth was brought up in a snarl, the scrapper still growling. Whoever it was, he wasn't going to let anything happen to Kit. He'd guard, just like Mama told him to. He'd make sure Mama was proud of him and Kit for guarding this spot and not letting whoever it was come through.
It’d been a while since the boy had been in the underground. He wasn’t sure if it was anywhere near where he used to be, it probably wasn’t, but from the looks of it everything was relatively a universal constant. He’d come down with Shinohara, who said something about them needing to do a thing pertaining to some case. Truthfully, Juuzou hadn’t been paying attention to the explanation. After a long white of trailing after his superior, he finally managed to slip away, wandering off on his own for a bit. Of course, even being a rank 2 investigator, he wasn’t supposed to roam about aimlessly, but when did that ever stop him?
Mama had said to guard. Had said that there was something coming. Mama said doves were coming and he and Kit were to guard while Mama and Kit's Mama scouted and went to find a new place for them to stay.
Inu sat on the concrete, scratching his head a bit. He wasn't too sure why they had to stay behind, but he did as Mama said. Mama knew best. Mama always knew best.
At some point while they waited for their mothers, Inu raised his nose up in the air. He smelled something, something odd. Something smelled human.
The scrapper began to growl towards where he smelled the scent, teeth bared. He moved onto his hands and knees, continuing to growl.
”You smell kinda like Mama.”
"You smell kinda like Mama."

She cocked her head to the side at the action.
Surely, he didn’t think simply baring his teeth like that would have her turn straight around. It would take more than that, she knew. That did not mean she wasn’t startled or the least bit surprised by the action.
Eyebrows furrowed, her kakugan flickered and kagune rustling. She mumbled, voice quiet and words explaining she was here vaguely:
❝ I have to go through this way. ❞
"But Mama said no! You can't go this way!"
She'd have to find another way. If he let her through, he'd be in trouble. Mama didn't like it when he didn't obey, Mama punished him for that. He had to obey.
"You'll have to find another way to go!"
He growled once more, not moving from where he stood.
