Preemptively, I struggle with tone so I want to make it clear I'm saying this in a non-upset, non-judgemental, hopefully helpful way.

If you have not converted to Judaism, you should not call yourself a convert. Judaism is a people and a tribe in a way a lot of things aren't anymore- when I realized I was a Therian it was a word for a thing I already was and I didn't need to go get approval to be one. Being Jewish might feel the same way- as a word for a thing you already are- but it's a bit more like being a citizen of a country. I've thought about immigrating to Canada, but I can't call myself a Canadian citizen before I go through the process, even if it'll be a while before I can even attempt and it'd make my life a lot better right now to be one. It's not a perfect metaphor, but hopefully it explains why calling yourself a convert now (as opposed to a prospective convert) might confuse + upset people.

I imagine you've gotten a lot of very negative responses, so I want to affirm that's not what this is meant as. I know someone who had a very hard time converting because they had a Jewish partner who was not connected to the community who had fringe ideas about who was Jewish and what it meant to be Jewish. I am not saying that is what is happening, but I am providing context for why I am sending this ask.

Also, I imagine people have been shitty about you existing the way you do- they suck and need to do better and I hope there haven't been many.

I am not going to properly respond to this as at the current moment I am unable to, and I'm going to be closing my inbox as even when people are being respectful, I still don't like reading so many paragraphs.

I definitely understand the feeling of wishing you had been born Jewish, and I share that feeling. It's a very common feeling among converts and prospective converts. It's common to experience a kind of mourning for the lack of a Jewish background, and for many of us, conversion feels like coming home. Respectfully, I think the difference in transgender identity and the longing to be Jewish is that being transgender means we are our gender, no extra steps required. We are the genders we feel are, regardless of what we may have been assigned at birth. And transitioning can be gender affirming, but it's not required, and we are our genders whether or not we take any formal transition steps. In that sense, becoming Jewish is less like being transgender and more like being adopted into a family. The longing we feel to be part of the family is not, in and of itself, enough to be Jewish. Just like adoption into a family is a formal legal process, adoption into the Jewish people is also a formal legal process, and whereas no one needs external permission to be a particular gender, the permission of community authorities (as represented through the sponsoring rabbi and beit din) is a requirement of being adopted into the Jewish tribe. That's why you might get negative reactions to framing Jewish identity as directly equivalent to being transgender. In the case of becoming Jewish, there are required transition steps (including a lot of study and community integration and ultimately ritual Mikveh immersion). I hope this makes sense. You will be widely welcomed and fully Jewish in accordance with our laws and customs if you complete this process with sincerity. I wish you well on your journey! I'm glad to hear that you're aware that becoming Jewish involves more than just self-identification and an ethnically Jewish partner's permission. I think the post you made did make it sound like you might not be aware of that, which is where a lot of those negative responses probably came from. I think you will have much more positive reactions from describing yourself as a prospective convert. As a fully converted Jew myself, I can speak to my own experience of being welcomed warmly by the majority of the community when I was a prospective convert. But I think the labeling/framing matters to a lot of Jews, because our ethnoreligious is semi-closed for good reason. I (and many other Jews I know) will welcome you with open arms as a prospective convert, but the label transJewish makes many of us deeply uncomfortable (including me, a transgender/nonbinary Jew) because it is not consistent with our tribe's established process for welcoming new members. It's an enormous and wonderful undertaking to become Jewish, and I respect you as someone seeking that. I hope you can likewise respect why to many Jews, the language prospective converts use matters in determining if the prospective convert is approaching the community with respect for our culture and customs, including respect for the formal conversion process. Just wanted to share that perspective. There is absolutely a place for you within the tribe if you approach the community with humility and open-mindedness and willingness to respect our process for welcoming converts

dude you are so respectful TwT thank you uhm, however, I am currently holding several different perspectives here I use the term Transjewish from my own understanding of it, and that is that I enjoy, respect, and like the culture/practice enough that I want to be a part of it kind of to the extent of "This feels right, it feels like me, I wish I was born into this" and not being ethnically it causes discomfort (hence the trans part) And my other perspective is that I am a convert, I was raised in a Christian household, feeling out of place and that its practices didn't fit me, which itself caused me to become uncomfortable and yearning for something else, something that to me felt more stable. and I will say this again, thank you for being so respectful towards me and my opinions, I deeply appreciate it, and I respect your thoughts and opinions as well.
