“Guys! Guys! I got an idea,” Jonathan grinned. Ryan sighed and rolled his eyes as Luke’s eyes lit up.
“Ooh! What is it this time?” Luke asked.
“Is it going to be as bad as the last one?” Jonathan glared at Ryan before quickly going back to his idea.
“Alright alright alright, so, you guys know that weird creepy house in that one creepy forest, right?” Both Luke an Ryan nodded their heads. “Well, some say it’s haunted and whatnot, but,” he paused for effect, “I say we prove them wrong!”
“And how would we do that, exactly?” Ryan asked, already not liking where this was going.
“We should spend the night in the house!”
“Oh my god, that’s a terrible idea.” Jonathan put his hands on the table and looked straight at Ryan.
“Why do you hate my plans, huh? Do you have something against me?”
“You, no. Your plans, yes.”
“What did my plans ever do to you?”
“Hmm, let’s see: they almost landed us in jail, they almost got us killed, I’m pretty sure that one guy was gonna rape us, and-”
“Okay, okay, I get it; not all of my plans are the best. But! This one will be different! Now, who’s with me!”
It took a second, but Luke raised his hand.
“See? One person cares about me,” Jonathan exclaimed, gesturing to Luke.
“Luke, why would you agree to this? You’re gonna get yourself killed out there!”
“Hey, I’m just here to make sure that he doesn’t kill himself on accident.” Ryan just sighed.
“Whatever. When exactly are you doing this?”
“Tonight.”
Ryan was about to argue, but then he remembered that he wasn’t going, and that it wasn’t his fault if they got hurt. So instead, he just walked out of the room to go get a drink.
Eventually, Luke and Jonathan set off, and they told him the time that they should’ve been back by in the morning. Ryan just waved them off, a little glad that he was able to have some ‘alone time’.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ryan sighed as he stood in front of the old house. He looked around a couple of times, just to make sure that his friends were nowhere around before he opened the creaky door.
It had been two days since Jonathan and Luke had gone out for their ‘adventure’, and there was still no sign of either one. At first, Ryan thought that maybe it was a prank they were pulling just to scare him. But when the second day rolled in and he hadn’t heard from either of them, he had started to get worried.
So now he was in this old abandoned house that could break under neath him at any minute.
Great.
Ryan turned on his flashlight and looked around. The place was empty; not even any trash littered the floor. It was just dust, dust, and more dust.
He walked around the house, with every step he took making a huge creaking sound that scared the living shit out of him. Soon, Ryan had covered the entire house, and he found literally nothing.
He was about to leave when his foot hit something, making him jump a bit. Ryan looked down to see a doorknob laying on the ground. Confused, Ryan picked it up and inspected it.
It looked like it was an antique. He looked at the wall to see a spot where the doorknob should have been. Ryan wondered how he could have missed the door when it hit him: the door was nearly blended in with the wall.
Whatever room this was, it was meant to be kept a secret.
Ryan attached the doorknob back to the door, it clicking in place. He turned the knob and opened the door to reveal stairs. Ryan shined his flashlight down to try and see how far it went. He could barely see the bottom of the basement. Ryan sighed and made his way down the creaky steps.
When he made it to the bottom, his steps echoed through the room. He looked around the room with his flashlight to reveal a table in the middle of the room. This table had an entire toy city on it. Ryan walked up to it and found that it was of the town.
Every little detail was put into it, including the house in the forest. “Well someone’s dedicated,” Ryan mumbled.
Off to the side of the room was another table, only it was smaller and had nothing on it. It did have a light shining on it, though. When Ryan shined the flashlight onto the walls, he froze.
Puppets.
Puppets littered the walls. Ryan walked around the entire area, and the only thing he found were puppets. They were of many shapes and sizes. It was only when he got to two specific puppets that Ryan froze again.
These two puppets looked exactly like Luke and Jonathan.
He stared at them, not sure whether to be surprised, scared, or in awe. He started to back away slowly when he tripped over something. That something just so happened to be a box. Ryan looked back to see that there were dozens of boxes near the wall.
Then he heard it: the door to the basement opened. Ryan’s eyes widened as he quickly went behind the boxes. There was enough space in-between to boxes for him to see what was going on.
A man in very fancy clothes walked down the steps as he hummed a random tune. He walked over to the toy city and kind of just messed with it a bit. Ryan took this as a chance to get out and started moving.
The first step that he took echoed throughout the room. Ryan froze once more, and so did the man. The man looked around for a bit, trying to find where the noise came from. He then walked over to the wall of puppets and grabbed one off of the wall. Ryan’s eyes widened once he realized that it was a puppet of him. The man put it on it’s back on top of the table and waited.
Soon, the puppet started to move on it’s own, and ended up in the same position as Ryan. Ryan’s eyes widened even more at the sight. He moved his arm to the right, and the puppet did the same. Ryan moved his leg a little, and the puppet followed. He kept doing this to see if there was some trick to it.
The man started smiling at the puppet, amused by it’s actions. Ryan eventually stopped messing around and stayed still. The man’s smile faded once the puppet stopped, but it came back after a second or two. He took the hood that the puppet was wearing and flipped it over it’s head.
At the same time, Ryan’s hoodie went over his head. Ryan pushed the hood back to where it was, and the puppet moved it’s hood back. The man frowned and flipped the hood back once more, and Ryan fixed it again.
They did this a couple more times before the man held the hood in place with his finger. Ryan found that he couldn’t move the hood anymore, and let out a silent sigh. The man smiled, as he knew he had won.
He then took his other hand and flipped the bunny ears that were on the hoodie up. It took Ryan a second to realize that the ears on his own jacket could be seen from over the boxes, and he started to panic. He quickly held them down, and the puppet did so too.
The man frowned once more and tried to move the puppet’s hand. Ryan felt as if someone was trying to pry his hands off of his head, but he held them still.
Suddenly, the feeling was gone. Ryan could see that the man was no longer touching the puppet. Instead, he was holding the controller of the puppet in his hand, and was slowly making it stand. Ryan realized that he himself was starting to stand as well. He forced himself to sit down, and the puppet did so as well.
A confused look came across the man’s face as he put the controller down and looked under the table as if to check to see if there was anything holding the puppet down. Ryan took this time to make his way out. He had almost made it out when he ended up running his foot into something.
It didn’t make a sound, surprisingly, but it still hurt like hell. “Fuck!” He hissed before he slapped a hand over his mouth. Ryan was still behind the boxes, but because he was near the stairs, the man could tell where he was now.
The man turned to Ryan’s direction and smiled. “Now now, Mister Wrecker, it isn’t nice to hide from your host, now is it?” He cooed.
“How did you-” Ryan shut himself up one more time. The man laughed and turned back to the table. He made the puppet stand up one more time, and as much as Ryan tried, he couldn’t stop himself. The man turned to face Ryan and walked up to him.
“Well, isn’t this nice? It does get lonely here, so thanks for coming. My name’s Bryce McQuaid, at your service,” he said as he bowed. Ryan didn’t say anything, he just stared, shocked. “Now, don’t be like that! We have so much to talk about, y'know,” Bryce smiled.
He pulled Ryan away from the stairs and pushed him into a chair. “So mind telling me why you’re here?” He asked.
“I-I was looking for my friends,” Ryan managed to get out. Bryce stopped for a second before he grabbed the puppets that looked like Luke and Jonathan.
“Did they looked like this?” He asked. Ryan nodded. “Oh! Well, uh, are you still looking for them?” Ryan nodded again. Bryce put the puppets on the table and they both moved on their own, much like what Ryan’s did.
Except that they didn’t really move that much; they just changed positions on the floor. Confused, Ryan tried to get closer to the puppets to get a better look, but Bryce just pushed him back into the chair. “Well, you should probably stop looking then,” Bryce said.
“Why?”
“Well, the thing is, I may or may not have made your friends kill each other,” Bryce awkwardly chuckled.
“What?!” Ryan exclaimed, shocked at the words.
“Well, let’s just say I had one of your friends stab the other, and the other shot the first one.”
Ryan stared at Bryce like he was crazy. “No, that’s not possible. They’ve got to be alive,” he mumbled. Bryce sighed as he grabbed the two controllers for Luke and Jonathan.
“Would you like me to show you what happened?” He asked. Before Ryan could answer, Bryce had already started with his little puppet show. He didn’t speak during the entire thing, he just moved the puppets.
It showed Luke and Jonathan walking side by side before they stopped. They seemed to be arguing until the puppets froze. Ryan realized that Bryce had stopped holding the controllers, but then they started moving again on their own.
Jonathan grabbed something out of his pocket and lunged at Luke. The thing that Jonathan held had red on it, and that’s when Ryan noticed that it was a knife. Luke fell to the ground, and Jonathan didn’t move. Then Luke slowly started to get up. Jonathan started to back away, only to hit an invisible barrier.
Luke held something in his hand, and from the way Jonathan fell, Ryan knew it was a gun. Luke fell after Jonathan was still. They were now in the same position as before, and Ryan was terrified.
Bryce looked over at Ryan with a smile still on his lips. “And that’s how it went down. If I were to know that they were your friends, I wouldn’t have messed with them. Sorry.”
Ryan didn’t meet Bryce’s eyes; he only stared at the two puppets. “You- you killed them?” It was more of a question than a statement.
“What? No, of course not! Well, I mean, I technically did, but I technically didn’t. They killed each other, but I was the one that made them kill each other, but they could’ve fought back and they didn’t, so it was technically their fault.” Ryan stared at Bryce like he was a madman before he got up from the chair and started running towards the stairs.
Ryan’s doll was still on the table, so Bryce used it to make Ryan walk back into the chair. “Don’t leave! It gets ever-so-lonely here all by myself,” Bryce said, sighing. Ryan glared at Bryce and tried to get out of the chair. It was no use; he was stuck. “There’s no use, Ryan. The only reason you’ll be getting out of that chair is if I let you out.”
“Are you sure this is safe?” Brock asked as he and some of his friends stood in front of the house.
“Of course it’s safe! It’s not like the place is in ruins or anything,” Evan replied as he took out his flashlight.
“I still think this is fucking stupid,” Tyler mumbled.
“You think all of my ideas are stupid, Tyler. Just open the door!” Tyler rolled his eyes and pushed the door open with ease, although it made a terrible creaking sound. “Where should we go first?” Evan asked.
“What about that door?” Brock pointed to a door that was almost right next to the front door.
“Well, it’s the closest, so why not?” Evan opened the door to reveal stairs leading down.
“Shit, that’s dark,” Tyler commented as he shined the flashlight down.
“That’s what we have flashlights for. So let’s go!” Tyler rolled his eyes as he and Brock followed Evan.
Everyone’s flashlight was on as they walked around the area. “Hey guys, check out this little city,” Evan said. There was a toy city of the entire town on the table in the middle of the room.
“Damn, someone had a lot of time on their hands,” Tyler said.
“Uh, guys? I think you should check this out,” Brock called from the other side of the room. He pointed his flashlight towards the wall to reveal hundreds of puppets.
“Woah…”
“That’s totally not creepy as shit.”
Before they could do anything else, they heard a light flicker on behind them. They turned around to see a man sitting in a chair that was in the spotlight. His head was laid back, and it seemed as if he was sleeping or something. “What the hell…” Tyler muttered. He slowly started walking towards the man when an arm pulled him back.
“Wait! What if it’s a trap or something?” Brock asked in a worried tone.
“Relax, it’s probably nothing. I’ll go with Tyler to prove it,” Evan said, walking up beside Tyler. Tyler rolled his eyes and walked up further.
Halfway there, the man’s head shot forward as if he was awoken suddenly and was now looking straight at Evan and Tyler. They both jumped and Brock covered his mouth to hide his gasp.
The man looked around before he looked back at the two in front of him. Evan and Tyler started to back away slowly. The man blinked before he spoke. “What are you doing here?” He asked tiredly.
“Um, we were just passing through, but we were about to go, so-”
The door leading to the basement opened and shut. The man sighed. “Bryce! We got a couple of kids in here!” He yelled. He stood up and walked towards the wall full of puppets, grabbing three of them.
Another man, presumably Bryce, came down from the stairs with a smile on his face. “Oh, wonderful! It’s always nice to see more people!” He exclaimed.
The other man put the puppets on another table and set them up to where they were on their backs. Bryce walked up to the table and put out three chairs before putting the puppets on the chairs. “There we go! I’m so glad I kept you,” Bryce cooed. The other man rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, well I still think that I shouldn’t have to sleep down here. That chair hurts my neck, y'know.”
“A bed will be the first thing I add down here.”
The yells from the three kids were ignored the entire time they were talking. “Hey! What the fuck is this shit?!” Tyler screeched.
Bryce sighed and turned around when he saw one of the puppets almost fall over. “Well, you now have my attention. What is it exactly that you would like to know?” He asked, the smile on his lips growing larger.
