red dead diaries!! pt. 7 - saint denis / guarma [pt. 6]

(note: this is my second high-honor playthrough, but i rushed through my first one doing basically only story missions; this is my playthrough of really exploring what the game has to offer! there will be spoilers for the main story throughout!)

always think its funny as hell when dutch volunteers arthur to go save jules from the gator like "oh arthur will get him" "I WILL?"

annoying that it won't let you use deadeye to shoot the gator

alright time to feed a mob boss to said gator (?)

"don't you ever leave love out, arthur. it's all we got." for what it's worth i do think dutch was motivated by love and i do think he loved arthur and everyone else but i just don't think it mattered enough to snap him out of his pride

i've been a micah hater since day one and a charles lover since day one and i remember watching this the first time going "WHY CAN'T MICAH GO JUST SEND MICAH"

little detail but it always pissed me off how dutch just shoos charles off the chair so he can sit and charles just like doesn't say anything about it boy stand up (but not literally) (stay seated, rather)

opening mission went okay, i don't know why but i remember dying at least twice here the first time

also my entire first playthrough i didn't remember hosea ever mentioning being sick, but he was coughing and said he had something, is it ever confirmed what?? i know arthur got it from downes but i'm just curious because i totally missed that the first time (i'm very observant) (there's a reason i plan to play this game 3+ times)

i know that i did pick up on arthur coughing around this time in my last playthrough (i also got spoiled so that didn't help; i didn't know what he had though i just knew he got some chronic sickness and knew it would probably be what killed him)

chat i'm kinda having fun in guarma i haven't died once yet and we just rescued javier

i locked the absolute fuck in and did not die a singular time during the entire guarma chapter

and to everyone's surprise including myself i genuinely had a blast omg that was so fun and so short LMAO what was my issue last time . literal skill issue, guarma isn't that bad at all

my favorite scene in the entire game!! arthur riding into shady belle with unshaken playing!!!!

his final ride with "that's the way it is" is a close second. i just love the scenes where it's just arthur, his horse, beautiful music, and ambiance

also if anyone can remind me what the final mission is called i'd love that :') i know that the final mission turns into red dead redemption and that technically is the final mission but the name of the one before that, i have to know when to set my horse free and stable buell

i got almost every single target during the dead eye thing in fleeting joy and also did not die a single time there

the red dead gods have blessed me

it is so sad how quickly arthur physically deteriorates after coming back from guarma/the events of guarma. if that didn't happen and if micah didn't wind up beating the piss out of him and if he wasn't just pushed to his physical limit in every damn way, i wonder how much longer he could've lasted :( not that it would have been long enough but maybe he could've gotten another few weeks, at least

oh also the honor thing was totally a glitch because when i opened the game back up, my honor was only slightly docked and that's an easy enough fix. but i swear after the bank robbery mission it was barely above half and i was Stressin

unfortunately i do have to stop here and it'll be a few months until i'm able to pick back up :( but trust that i am so eager to and i will miss it every damn day. i am OBSESSED with this game, expect lots of red dead content (possibly even a fic... crazy, the writer may actually be writing for once) in the meantime :))

okay so i do think it is in fact impossible to do the eagle flies mission quietly but that's fine at least it's done and far less sloppy than my first time doing it

on the bright side it's time for one of my other favorite missions, the riverboat robbery mission with the high-stakes poker game :D i was scared for a minute cause i couldn't remember if this one leads to guarma but it can't yet because i haven't robbed the bank or the trolley yet (and dutch has only mentioned tahiti once) (bro yaps about that for fucking ever and then gets his karma of washing up on a tropical island unwillingly)

the amount of dread i have to replay the guarma section... god help me

oh okay so my options are go to the mission that i think kills lenny and hosea or go to the riverboat mission . i think i'll choose the riverboat!

after playing extended sections of the game with the white, brindled and black arabians now, i think they actually do have different fear levels. i've noticed gaola (white) is the most skittish, i think reaper (black) is in the middle and guinevere (brindle) actually doesn't seem to startle too easily

i'm still playing with reaper though since he's newest :)

i also think that different horses have different levels of clumsiness LMAO because gaola barely ever ran into a thing, guinevere was the same way, but goddamn reaper sees a pebble in the ground and decides he's not only going to walk over it but trip over it. boy also goes out of his way to run directly into any tree or telephone pole i fear

arthur's weight is average again huge things are happening

my honor went from being maxxed to being at like half because of this one singular mission and i genuinely don't understand why. was it bugged or something??? this did not happen last time i am almost positive. that is so frustrating. i'm running out of chances to increase it and i'll be in guarma soon and then beaver hollow and i know you have to have high honor for a lot of the important end-game side quests/cutscenes

i think about the dutch defense chess move often and it's interesting that it really starts coming into effect after arthur calls angelo bronte "the king around here". dutch is plotting to checkmate

okay this has gotten very long oops i've been playing for longer than i realized. there miiight be one more coming but after that i unfortunately have to take a hiatus from playing for a few months while i'm on the other side of the state :( but these are so fun and i hope you guys enjoy reading them as much as i like making them :))

i accidentally kicked a police force dog to death thinking it was a person (i legitimately couldn't see and i thought arthur pistol whipped an officer so he fell) and the second i realized it was a dog i spent the entire rest of the mission trying to die on purpose so it would reset BUT I LITERALLY WOULDN'T DIE AND NOW I HAVE A BOUNTY OF $45 AND A HORRIBLE GUILTY CONSCIENCE

i will be dragging this chapter out for all it's worth . guarma my beloathed

starting off strong by meeting four strangers, one of them told me that vagina and breasts was the truest magic of life or some shit, one made me play irl battleship (fun as FUCK btw), one asked me for a hundred gallons of straight moonshine for a "love machine"(????), and one had me rescue some slaves . variety is the spice of life!

the last time i played saint denis, the kids stealing my satchel pissed me off so badly i vowed to speedrun the entire chapter as quickly as i could; this time i actually managed to catch him pretty quickly so i wasn't nearly as upset, which was a big win LMAO

poor bartender asked me to exterminate some rats from his saloon ... this is the second time he has asked me to do this and i'm beginning to wonder if 1899 had a health department i should telegram

circled back and did the magnifico quest, what a jazzy fellow

did the mark johnson bounty quest and was feeling honestly guilty at first until he jumped off the horse and then had his outlaws damn near kill me so i brought him in anyway ... still kinda felt bad though

he started taunting arthur about his past and about redemption and being a changed man and now i'm googling if i can save him at all because man i feel bad

okay i just went on a huge rabbit hole about how mark johnson is meant to be a parallel of john marston (i thought the names sounded similar...) and it's meant as a thought experiment about how the law views john and arthur and playing the other side of it. i also read that when he's hanged they say he killed many innocent people, so that made me feel a little bit better because the way i play arthur at least is a very good man. he wouldn't kill innocent people unless he had to. which i guess you could argue for mark, too, but i think i'll let it go. like arthur said, if he didn't take it, somebody else would've. it'd catch up to him either way. (i think it knocks your honor if you save him too, anyway.) what an interesting side quest though, bravo rockstar!

i'm taking down wanted posters for these two escaped prisoners i found and a bounty hunter grabbed one, i asked for it back and he said no, so i went to follow behind him to loot it off him when we were out of town but the game just decided to dock me honor because i didn't act immediately so that kinda fucking sucked. hogtied and looted him for the poster then let him go and it didn't raise my honor back up :/ but i got the poster at least

red dead diaries! pt. 1 - clemens point / saint denis (written at 3am) (i'm delirious)

i saw some other people do this and i really enjoyed reading theirs, so i'm gonna start keeping a little log of sorts of my rdr2 shenanigans. it will probably be largely horse focused...... i love my babies

(note: i'm currently just beginning chapter four, but this is my second time playing the game! there will be spoilers! be advised!)

i went from hating fishing with a passion to catching two legendary fish in the span of like an hour (lake isabella salmon, and the one by clemens point, i think it was a bluegill?) so that was a big win

and for my efforts i received a lake lure ... thank you ?

also walked in on uncle fully showing bare ass to reverend swanson . didn't meant to interrupt whatever was going on there so arthur absolutely powerwalked away like a champ (after i took a screenshot of course)

freed some dude trapped in a gunsmith's basement dressed in a sailor costume???? turned out to be tragic actually the guy kept him there because he reminded him of his dead son or Something . still absolutely insane, the hostage got out safe and the gunsmith just kinda laid there sobbing

i went back in the next in-game day to look at the guns and get some of them cleaned and not arthur or the gunsmith said a single word and it was so painfully awkward

i started playing today with the intent to find the hidden gold-plated schofield revolver . this led me to realize there was a large portion of the map i just straight up hadn't been in yet (did i go there and get said revolver? no) (i had every intention to) (but then i got distracted) (see the legendary fish above) (perhaps this is a task for tomorrow)

so i actually hate forcing arthur to do things when he's getting sicker and sicker and looking more and more like one of those little dogs old ladies have that look like they're begging to be put down, this leads me to do a lot of my running around in chapters two and three

so there were lots of side quests (and lots of distractions) (everything but actually being productive, really)

i've been trying to break the fuckass warbled brindle arabian for legitimately days at this point because it keeps falling off rocks and killing itself or i'm a dumbass and lose it when it runs off (or accidentally shoot it instead of lassoing) (that was not my proudest moment...s) BUT I HAVE BIG NEWS !! i finally got her safe and sound, i named her guinevere because idk arthur and guinevere and the name is pretty and she is so very pretty <3

(my main horse, the white arabian from lake isabella, her name is gaola which means redemption <3 i love she)

i fucked around for a while more just looking for different herbs and hunting, i did a lot of hunting today actually

mostly because the parts of the actual main questline i did progress was with sean dying and arthur saying he didn't want to be around micah so i just kinda fucked around and tried to keep him out of camp as much as possible

however this wound up backfiring because i brought three whole deer carcasses to camp and was unable to donate a single one because pearson was locked due to jack going missing (i totally forgot that happened that quickly after sean died) so i wound up wasting three whole deer and i felt very badly about it :(

but i'm officially in chapter four now!! and back to doing anything But the main storyline ... but it's okay because jack is eating spaghetti in an italian mansion somewhere he can chill for a bit while i fuck around

the opening scene of charging the braithwaite manor is definitely top 3 best scenes in the game, i was stoked to watch that again

the non-important fuckery included trying for like the fourth time to find the ghost in bluewater marsh . i still cannot find her and i don't hear her talking or anything so i'm not sure if i'm doing something wrong or what, but reverend swanson was going around camp shady belle saying he saw the ghost of a girl in a white dress in the swamp and i know that's her so theoretically i know it's possible . idk why it is not working for me but alas we shall keep trying

after finally breaking the warbled arabian i decided that i wanted to get more horses (arthur loves his horsey and his horsey love he) so i tried to tame the perlino andalusian up kinda by annesburg

so that didn't go well (the horse killed itself by absolutely freaking out when arthur had the Audacity to like breathe in its presence and it hurled itself off a cliff by the waterfall) (good thing it didn't overreact or anything)

i reloaded the save so it's alive but i couldn't find it where it was supposed to be, which happened a lot with the brindle arabian, so i just fucked off to do other things and i'll go back to it probably tomorrow

and also while i was riding up to the location i passed a stranger mission where i just beat the fuck out of a guy in a bar and was told to track down some rando whose name sounds like the worst kind of superhero slash magician you can imagine (i did not do that yet) (i had a horse agenda which unforunately failed regardless)

licking my wounds and cutting my losses, i decided to google horses that were EASIER to get for my poor fragile ego and THAT led me to the saint denis stables since i'm now in chapter four and there's cool new horses there

i literally wanted to buy all of them . this save has kinda just turned into the arthur collecting every arabian type save so i heavily debated the black arabian and i actually really wanted a nakota and the one in the stable is soooo cute so i absolutely might go back for them

but i heard specifically about the gold-coated turkoman and how it was supposed to be a far less skittish horse, i've basically only played with arabians this entire save and they're scared of their own shadow so i wanted a bigger braver stronger horse

i bought the turkoman and named him ares <3

ares fully bucked me off at the first sideways glance of a gator approximately five feet away from his person and about twenty feet away from the fucking stable i got him from so the bravery is going very well but it's okay i still love him

rode past valentine at one point and did a quest where these two idiots wanted me to shoot bottles off their heads to impress helen of troy or some shit, so i absolutely smoked them

i also did a lot of random fetch quests today, i got bill some hair pomade (crazy), i got lenny a pocketwatch, i got susan some seasoning herbs, and i got some moonshine for charles and he made me flaming arrows which is sick as hell and i can't wait to use those at some point
