. OK so I decided to consolidate all of the questions from Legion > Shadowlands that we have not yet got answers to, which I plan to keep updated with answers or further questions that come up. Please think of this as an interactive thread so if you have any burning questions you would like added please submit them via a Reblog and I will happily add them to this list.

Disclaimer - this was done primarily with a focus on Sylvanas and the Jailer as a last minute thing so I have not considered much else regarding the rest of the Shadowlands (i.e. the other Covenants, the Eternal Ones, the Brokers etc.) so please do feel free to let me know any I could add in this regard too. Also, I have not yet read the new "Folk & Fairytales" book yet, so this will no doubt grow longer after I have xD

1. Why is Sylvanas working with the Jailer – i.e. what exactly did he tell/show her?

2. Why is Sylvanas working with Kel’Thuzad?

3. Why did Sylvanas go to The Maw when she died?

4. Which realm/covenant would Sylvanas’s soul originally meant to have gone to?

5. Why did Kel’Thuzad go to Maldraxxus instead of The Maw / Revendreth?

6. What other purpose/role did Helya’s Soul Lantern from ‘Legion’ play?

7. What was the bargain between Sylvanas and Helya?

8. Did the Jailer tell Sylvanas in ‘Edge of Night’ of the plan to make her Warcheif?

9. Did Sylvanas know that Mueh’zahla was one of the Jailer’s allies before ‘Legion’?

10. Was the death of Vol’jin - and therefore the naming of Sylvanas as Warcheif – somehow pre-planned by the Jailer and his allies, or was it merely taking advantage of a fortuitous situation (i.e. the Legion invading)?

19. Why did Sire Denathrius decide to help the Jailer escape again after initially (apparently) working with the other Eternal Ones to "bind" him in the Maw?

20. Why was ‘The Champion’ PC the only one who could open the keystone out of the Maw?

21. Why was the Jailer torturing The Primus for his memories of Frostmourne and the Helm of Domination?

22. What cycle is Sylvanas talking about when she says “The cycle will be broken. At last, we will have justice” in the raid?

The writers.

Calia has always been there, but she was brought into focus during “Before the Storm,” a novel written to vilify Sylvanas and set up the plot (and character assassination) for BfA and beyond. Sylvanas was written to become like her abuser, satisfying Christie Golden’s kink for “what makes good people do bad things” [x] that she explores in every franchise she’s hired to butcher. [x]

Sylvanas was written as tyrant in comparison to Calia and that was deliberate. Calia exists solely to show the reader how awful Sylvanas is by contrast; she’s depicted as this sweet woman who despite her past trauma (surviving the murder of her family/subjects by her brother’s hand + scourge invasion + child loss) is loving, hopeful, and willing to forgive her transgressors and move on—like a good victim should. It paints the picture that only a trauma response like hers, a person like her, is worthy of compassion and acceptance.

This is reinforced by how she’s rescued and immediately embraced (and still loved) by everyone after being made into a special brand of undead (not the stinky and ugly kind that upsets mortal sensibilities.) She’s written to purposefully be the opposite of Sylvanas, which in itself wouldn’t be bad (there are all kinds of trauma survivors) if not for the fact that the writers paint Calia as the “right choice” and a “good person” because of those differences.

And it isn’t just Sylvanas. The writers fail every single “angry” survivor, especially if female. Through this narrative, they sell the idea there is only one valid way to process trauma (being a doormat) and only one kind of survivor worthy of a happy ending (Calia.)

Their story tells us survivors shouldn’t be/stay angry because anger is always toxic, leading to villainy and/or madness. Just look at what they did to Tyrande and the Night Warrior arc. Through her plot, the writers told us vengeance is wrong, turning the cheek is right, and the only way to move on is forgetting and forgiving. They depicted her anger as “losing herself” and “losing what made her good” and made it into a force that nearly “drove her insane.” The only reason she didn’t end like Sylvanas was because she was forced to “embrace the bad that happened” and give up the need for revenge (justice) as some cosmic greater purpose scheme.

For players who saw themselves in those angry characters, related to their story, the writers gave them a huge couple of middle fingers by continually vilifying and punishing those characters while uplifting a very specific kind of survivor as the only one worthy of a good story. So, Calia could have been a great character, but she was used to tell the audience everything that was wrong with those not like her.

Calia was also imposed on a group of people who always represented “angry survival” due to their experiences and need for that rage to actually endure and cope. This was always the core of the Forsaken, regardless of Sylvanas’ existence.

The problem with Calia, the Disney Zombie, is the writers and their intentions with her, what she represents, the message she sends, and what her forced inclusion means.
