Model Philomena Kwao on being black in a makeup chair: “They’re almost afraid to touch me”

Plus-size model Philomena Kwao, who recently appeared in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, is on a mission.

She wants to make sure no one forgets just how hard it is to be a black woman and in need of some quality makeup.

In a recent video for i-D, Kwao speaks with the model Iman about the struggles of being a black model in a makeup chair.

And of working with makeup artists who are clearly clueless about how to deal with darker skin. Read more

The Crisis was founded in 1910 by W.E.B. DuBois as the magazine of the NAACP. Within nine years it reached a circulation of 100,000. It was an important venue in its early days for African American authors, including Jean Toomer, Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Jessie Fauset. Notable cover artists included Frank Walts and Aaron Douglas.

Some wounded themselves, other shut down, even more gave up but there is always one child - ferocious of heart and robust of soul - who sees circumstance as chance and chance as a window out of a dark room.
